meshking Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 That's a good plan.Might take a bit of convincing to the missus, because it's not as cute as an h. Looks like it has good headroom. I guess once here I need to register as a camper, so something with sidewindows would be good. Sent from my SGP621 using Tapatalk

alf892 Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 The Kia might still be the pads moving . Possibly a missing spring or shim . I've had some cars where the back of the brake pads need to be siliconed to the caliperAlso some pads are directional.........I put some in 'wrong' in Mrs Alfs A4. No other sypmton apart from occasional knock......... I had never come across directional pads but then I've been off the spanners a good few years now!
D Spares & Tyres Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Question for Sir David Attenborough. Why do snails congregate on my concrete path at 20.00 every night? Last night there were 17 of the bastards. Don't know what they were doing but every morning they are gone again. What are they doing ( no sexy shenanigans as far as I can tell ) and where do they go when they've finished? Perhaps it's a boy snail racer meet or an AS meet in miniature/? Awaiting the wisdom...................Every morning I go in the kitchen then are slug trails all over the floor but no sign of the slugs. No obvious where they are coming from either. And yes I`ve tried following some of the tracks....They are never seen in daylight. Came down in the night recently to find one in the middle of the floor. Left him be, didn`t seem to be doing any harm
phil_lihp Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Do all Volvo 940s have the same brake discs and pads? Reason being, I've discovered when having the front tyres done that the front discs on mine are knackered so I'm bargain hunting. I'm not keen on Eicher from the general poor opinion of them and it's a big, heavy car so I'd rather have something decent; Pagid is my usual preference. The pads look OK but I'd rather change them while I'm at it. This seems like a bargain: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-740-744-Pagid-Front-Brake-Kit-2x-Disc-1x-Pad-Set-Vented-Bendix-System-/291501232237?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Car+Make%3AVolvo%7CModel%3A940&hash=item43ded3d06d#vi-ilComp But...it's not listed at all on the CarParts4Less website when I put my registration number in, nor are the pads individually, and the 1996 2.3 Estate (which is what mine is) is not listed as a compatible option although there are other similar models listed. Are there different types?
Richard Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 There are two diameters and two offsets for one diameter IIRC. If you go to buypartsby.co.uk they give you the measurements for each type, so you can work out which ones you need. I've a feeling your car will have the fwd offset because it's quite late. I can look up on the Volvo database if you give me the chassis number but I suspect it will give the same three choices that motor factors give you. phil_lihp 1
robinmasters Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 There is a good K series article here http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/facts-and-figures/essays/essay-k-series-–-what-makes-it-tick/ Well worth reading: "The system does not function well in cooling circuits with a radiator a long way from the engine in the cooling path, or for engines constantly seeing high engine speeds ............ ........This can cause enormous thermal gradients across the engine, causing both distortion of the head and block and also gasket failure. "So, to summarise, it's a strong, powerful engine, which was ahead of it's time and superior to engines subsequently used in it's place in motorsport. Then BL put the thermostat on the wrong end.
burraston2006 Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Advise from the wise ones please! Taking the kids to welsh Wales at the begining of august. Going to the Parkdean camp site in Trecco Bay. Eldest 16 youngest 13. What the fuck is there to do other than the beach. Wouldn't mind going up Snowdon but that's an hour or more drive. There a couple of fairgrounds to go to near by but other than that what else is there? My kids idea of fun is to sit on their ipads/laptops/'phones all day doing feck all!

Plenty of walks, too! We stayed in Conwy a few years ago & loved the area! Go up Snowdon and get the train back or vice versa. burraston2006 1

catsinthewelder Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Brecon beacons are fairly near though and it would be a hardy 13 year old that could walk up the bigger ones. Maybe hire mountain bikes or something? If it pisses down and you're stuck for something to do then the Swansea museum is pretty good.
mat_the_cat Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Pendine Sands might be worth a look too. They have/had a land speed record museum there.

Thanks Richard, that's a really useful site, not least because aside from the measurements, they also give list of equivalent part numbers for various manufacturers (including Pagid). Richard 1
bub2006 Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Never underestimate the size of Wales. It's bigger than you think.Valid statement dw. I didn't realise how far it was from museum to the other site.
phil_lihp Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 ^ I regularly forget this when visiting my sister in Swansea - passing Cardiff on the M4 I think 'oh good, nearly there'. Nope, there's another hour to go, more if the traffic's heavy. Mind you, the stunning scenery of mid-Wales means that a long drive is more of a pleasure than it would otherwise be, I need to get up there more often as I haven't seen that much of it yet. Thanks again Richard by the way, by using the part numbers on that site to search I found Amazon selling off Brembo brake discs for £18 - that'd be cheap per disc but it was for the pair! Obviously will have to wait and see if there's a catch when they arrive but that plus some NOS Lucas pads for £10 off Motorpart on eBay means I am a happy chap today and all being well will have a very stoppy* turbo brick by the weekend. *Yes, it is a word. Because I said so. Richard 1
skattrd Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I might need a new fuel tank for the Merc, w202 c250TD estate, so does anyone know if...1. The estate and saloon used the same fuel tank?2. Any other models shared the same tank as the w202 250TD estate? w201? w203? c220 cdi?
Bobthebeard Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Having an unblemished license for over 30 years I recently got a speeding ticket that ended up with me going on a speed awareness course. Fair enough. Today though I may have got another. Came round a bend on a road that I thought was a 50 limit to see a camera van 50 yards ahead. The van was parked next to a national speed limit sign. Looking in my mirror I saw that the limit I was leaving was actually a 40. I was doing around 45. The fact that the camera van was placed to obviously create revenue is irrelevant. Thing is the camera van had the rear windows closed with no camera poking out. Can these vans still register speed through a closed window? If so every car in front and behind me will have got a ticket also...Bugger.
Richard Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Can these vans still register speed through a closed window? As far as I know they can't- they aren't approved for use behind glass. Bobthebeard 1

catsinthewelder Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I've not long got back from nipping to the supermarket in the Cherry and it was decidedly odd on the way back. I went to pull out of the carpark and it had no power and cut out. I restarted it and drove it up a small hill where it cut out again at the traffic lights and then again further up the road. This time I couldn't get it going properly, each time it would fire but wouldn't rev and cut straight back out so hazards on and pop the bonnet. I did find that the dizzy was loose so stuck it in the middle (fixed when I got home). But beyond that I couldn't find anything wrong. Once it had cooled down it was back to normal. This isn't the first time it's happened, it did it once to me in Birmingham at 3am but Ms C has had a few problems but hasn't told me till now. What do we think chaps? Auto-choke or ignition?

bub2006 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 How can I remove a rounded off locking wheel nut? I've tried hammering a socket over it,hitting it round with a punch etc but no joy.
andy18s Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Depends on the type of nut and wheel.stick a pic up to make it a.bit easier to suggest something
skattrd Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 How can I remove a rounded off locking wheel nut? I've tried hammering a socket over it,hitting it round with a punch etc but no joy. Most garages should have some funky gripping sockets to remove them ... they will probably charge a few quid though.
bub2006 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Sorted it. A local garage kindly supplied me with a big strapping man with a big g strapping hammer. He said it's a common thing and charged me a fiver. Thanks for advice though. May come in handy for the other 3. The vectra alloys have a locking cover and someone put locking wheel nuts on too.
Station Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Those Irvin nut removers aren't big enough. They are good though.Avoid cheaper Amazon jobbies, they are too small in length to get a good grip on the nut.
