Scrap that, seems I wasn't in the full version.

I fail at anything technical

Is there any reason I shouldn't put aluminium tape on the reflector bowls of the Range Rover's REAR lamp clusters, to restore some shininess?

Come to that, should I use something else entirely, to achieve the same effect?

New clusters are no longer available - part number obsolete says Land Rover - and in any case, were they available, they'd be megabucks. A new lens is about £80.

Well, it is the 'stupid question amnesty' thread! :)

Place a 'for sale ad' on here. She is looking* for a larger vehicle now. A beige Nissan Prairie may tempt her into sending you a PM. Once PM received ask her to text you her final offer. You get her number! Result.

2002 Nissan Primera 2.2Di SVE

£1200 with 120K miles - should I be afraid of it going bang?

I know someone had found a way to resilver headlights on uksaabs. Not sure if they could do yours.

Posted

If they can do rear light clusters, I might well be interested :) I'll look into it. Otherwise, aluminium tape it is.

Isn't that a Renault engine?

Liepedia says not.

NO IT ISN'T

it is basically the same engine as the 2.5di in the navara

the 1.9 is the renner engine which you're more likely to find in Ireland than over here

£1200 with 120K miles - should I be afraid of it going bang?

biggest pain is the turbot is vnt and the vanes stick so the turbo spins too fast and cooks the bearings

rear lights suffer bad earth due to cheap renner type connectors- easily sorted in shitter style with extra wire between body & lamp unit

there are different power levels depending on age to try and get round the turbot issues- full fat=136 semi-skimmed=122

Need to top up the Mazdas brake fluid.  Reservoir cap says Dot 3 but I only have a tub of Dot 4 fluid. I assume they can't be mixed and I'll have to buy some Dot 3 type fluid?

Or can I happily mix them without fear of ensuing chaos?

Posted

Just kidding. You can mix DOT3 and DOT4.

Don't mix 3 or 4 with DOT5, though.

The plastic headlamp lenses on the boring are scratched and hazy, what's the best way to get them clear and sparkly again?

Did someone on here mention toothpaste or metal polish for this before?

What's the part number and I'll have a look in my parts bin.

MOT Question - The MOT on the BMW runs until next April, but if I was to have it tested say next week and it failed on something would the MOT then expire? i.e. Its failed so effectively has no MOT.

I don't think it does but im just looking for 100% confirmation.

Reason being I am slightly bored and keep hankering after a 75 Connie. Would much rather sell the BM with a full years ticket, I always do.

I though a car was as good as it's most recent test, if it fails today on something dangerous how can the fact it was previously OK be more important?

Posted

Good point, but I really don't know.

There are a few testers on here who will know...

I would ask the testing station to do a pre mot that way it won't be logged onto the computer so if it did fail you don't need to worry. It may cost a little more if they charged you for a pre test and then a full test if it was ok. I have never had a definitive answer if the failure would cancel out the previous test when I have asked

Found this on the GOV.UK website:

If your vehicle fails the test

You’ll get a ‘notification of failure’ from the test centre if your vehicle fails the test. The failure will be recorded in the secure central MOT database.

You can still drive your vehicle if it fails the test and its existing MOT certificate is still valid (ie you got it tested before the expiry date). However, you might be stopped by police and prosecuted if your vehicle is unroadworthy.

If the vehicle fails the test and the certificate has expired, you can only drive it to:

have the failed defects repaired

a pre-arranged MOT test appointment

Thanks Bob so that says to me that the current MOT would still be valid until April, but obvs the police would pull you, or any car over if it looked dangerous or unroadworthy. That bit goes without saying, the main thing is that whatever happens I can still drive it around until next April.

I should say its a very well kept car and im not expecting too much, it was tested 7 months ago having done 2k, but there is an advisory for slightly corroded rear brake pipes.

I think the difference is, if you don't have it tested within the 12 months then you may get pulled for driving an unroadworthy vehicle at any point whilst an MOT is in force.

If you did have it tested, and it failed, your original MOT is still valid but if you then got pulled by the police, they may take a more strict line when they see that it had a fail recorded against it and you drove it regardless.

Ignorance is not bliss, but it sort of helps here.

Cheers. Mixed them and all seems well in the world.

@SD1 : I have asked that question to 2 MoT testers (here in N.I. they are Civil Servants). One said "Yes, you'd have no MoT", the other said "No, the old one is still in force".

A lot of my mates are Police, and trust me, not even ONE of the fuckers knows, one way or the other.

I realise that that's a very helpful* response. Drop VOSA an email, maybe?

We need someone to take a car for test which has a while to go, let it fail and then watch the Gotv. com site to see what happens! Take one for the team, as it were.

I bought my car a couple of months ago with a supposedly new mot,  (garage re mots a car if it has less than 8 months)

after a good few calls and being told yes it has full mot and we will print of a new mot and post it out,  turns out the service manager put it in for test and it failed on two tyres and a bulb out, they sorted it but then forgot to put it back through

I have been told to pop it into a local garage and get it moted and they will pay but I cant be arsed so it will wait until it runs out in March, I have done a good few thousand miles in it now and have not been stopped  YET

A valid MOT will suffice until it expires, regardless of an interim test. VOSA say so. If the vehicle has any faults that deem it unroadworthy it is illegal. Regardless of MOT status.
