Does anyone have any experience of removing matt paint from a car?

if the old paint wasn't rubbed down first try steam cleaning it then i guess celly thinners for the leftover bits.

not done it myself but think the interweb sez it iz ok

Posted

Yeah, jet wash the absolute balls off it and you'll remove a lot of it. Try some 2k standard thinners (celly stuff is a bit fierce and might bugger up the OG paint). It'll deffo shift anything that comes out of an aerosol but if it's nato green they might have used proper paint.

It'll need a good buff afterwords and there's bound to be all sorts of bits left over in crevices that'll take you years to remove totally.

Does anyone have any experience of painting plastic trim?

I painted the guttering on my house - a mixture of new plastic, old plastic and previously painted bits - with ordinary gloss paint, ignoring all the instructions to rub down, prime etc, and it still looks GR9 years later.

I once painted some wing mirrors with an ordinary rattlecan on the same basis and it began flaking off almost as soon as it was dry.

Another example of why cars are ANNOYING.

The only conclusion I can draw from my exploits is that you should fashion bumpers for your car from household guttering and paint them with Dulux Weathershield.

Anyone recommend a decent method for getting fuel from a 20l tub into a vehicle as a one man operation?

I've tried a few funnels and they all piss down the side of the car/are too wobbly and fall off/leak from the screw fitting between the funnel and nozzle bit. I had a lift pump out of a mk2 golf that was dead good at pumping pez in and out of various things, but I could have talked veg oil down the pipe faster than it pumped it. I'd rather something I can just drop in the tub and let it pump away than having to manhandle big wobbly cardboard covered tubs of KTC, it's like trying to pour gravy out of a carrier bag.

Best I've got is a plaggy petrol can with the back end cut off hung off some bungee straps, but the nozzle leaks like they all do and I end up with loads of oil all over the place.

Why are all car engines on "that" side except on older Japanese stuff? I assume it's because they're the only captive market to have RHD cars, but what's the science behind it?

Weight distribution, space above transmission in front of driver for direct acting servo/master cylinder et al/ Clutch cables that are 18" long and don't go through 79 grommets to get to lever etc etc etc

I just put up with the veg stains around my fuel filler.

Use the boot strut or roof rail as an anchor for the bungee.

I have a funnel that consists of the actual funnel, 200mm of flex-pipe and slightly narrowed end piece. Its a proper petrol funnel.

Can't remember where I got it though.

Sounds like one that I bought for engine oil which looks like this

and is £2.70 posted on fleabay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FLEXI-TWO-PAR ... 27c3b3674d

I've never tried mine with fuel though

I had one of them and it pissed out from where the top cone bit screwed onto the tube, maybe I had a bad one?

I find 20l containers are really a 2 man job. I generally stick to supermarket 3 or 5l bottles as they're easier to handle. If I do get a large 15/20l container then I pour it in to a watering can first and fill the car from the watering can.

I also have veg stains all over the boring, but don't really care. There's also numerous dents, scratches and other assorted blemishes on the car that I don't care about.

This, but the best way I found (that doesn't involve spending money) is to get one of those small water or pop bottles, rip a bit out (so it acts as a funnel) then sort of wedge it in with an old rag or some carrier bags.

Then hold your drum in the air and pour it in slowly not forgetting to put a small hole in the can as it doesn't half make it easier to pour and it doesn't 'glug' and throw precious amber nectar all over your best Bay City Rollers sweat shirt.

I'd have an arm like George Micheal after pumping 40l of veg with one of those pumps Pillock, I remember trying to pump some cherry into my mates car with one and after about 15l I gave up.

I'm gonna dig the big long funnel out of the bin, wipe the grease off it and tigerseal the top to the pipe so it doesn't leak. I've got a suction cup off an old sat nav that I'll lash up with some bits of string to hang it off the side of the car. Cheers lads.

Now I've got used to it sounding like a skeleton having a wank in a filing cabinet that's falling down a fire escape until I've done a couple of miles, the golf runs fine on 100% veg, done 500 miles or so now. - doesn't seem any more slow than normal or anything.

Get one of these.

Attach one of these.

25L-Tap.jpg

Stick it on the roof of your car... fuck the paint. Attach a hose into your fuel filler, go and smoke a tab.

When you return, job done. less mess, car full.

What would you call one of them tap things? my veg comes in more or less the same bottle as that (but collapsible so it'll fold in on itself as the oil drains) and I reckon there's a chance it would screw on nice.

EDIT: Found one, a fiver, sorted! nice touch Albert

Obv. you don't want to spill any as at £20.99 per 20 litres you cannot afford to. The newspaper/carrier bag arrangement is the perfect* spill protection and entirely failsafe*

It needs to look like I am drinking meths.

I have an empty, clean meths bottle with the label still intact, but I'm struggling to replicate the colour.

Anyone got any ideas please?

Interesting question!

Aren't there some blue coloured soft drinks these days? Have a go at mixing one of them with some very weak diluted Robinsons type cordial. I quite often drink 'fruits of the forest' flavour and it's quite a pale lilac colour, but would need a bit of bluey-ness to make it look like meths.

Or alternatively, just buy a bottle of meths and drink that....

Does anyone know a way of finding out about old dealerships? I'm trying to narrow down where the Rover was sold from, it is a Salford registered car so I assume as a consequence sold from a Manchester Rover dealer. I would ideally like to find out what one as I'd like to get some proper plates made up for it in time.

Edit: A quick search of the internet shows up Horners as a former Rover franchise holder. It could this one I guess.

Quick welding question, when the trigger is pulled I can hear the gas pissing out.Is this right or is the regulator not regulating?

Cheers

Posted

You should hear gas coming out mate yeah, but it should stop when you let go of the trigger. Set it so that you can just feel it blowing on the back of your hand from 1cm or so.

Thanks Cobblers. I'll have a play with it over the weekend, (the welder).

Is there any easy* way of getting oil/grease stains from clothes? I cleverly changed my bike chain whilst wearing a nice t-shirt which has now been ruined.

I've not seen a Gloss T-Shirt for years.....!

What about some of the WKD or other brands of Alcopops? Jacques Cider? Kopparberg? You might need to try a variety before you find the right one, and by that time, you won't care if you ARE drinking Meths. Hey, what about a bottle of Metz instead...? It SOUNDS the same....

Get a v888 form from the post office, fill out and send it back with a £5 cheque and they will send you back a copy of every paperwork they have for your car, one of them will be the original first registration application which will have the name and address of the dealer who registered and thus sold your car new.
