The Maxeret Anti Jack Knife System was out in the sixties and was the technology used for the first ABS systems.

Posted

I assume the ABS can only do so much and collisions and extreme manovers can't be coped with, ??

.

does ABS really matter if 20 tons of hazadous waste shifts in the tanker and pushes the tractor unit under heavy braking ?

Which takes us back to:

Anti-jacknife devices have been around for donkeys years. Why have they never become standard or even required by law?

Does anybody remember the days when lorries had "Caution Air Brakes" signs fitted to the backs of them?

i ll check in my transport managers handbook 1974

More likely.

I'm not sure of that but where I work we don't load tankers who are between 20 and 80 percent full if they don't have baffles fitted.

I can remember when some cars had "Caution: Disc Brakes" signs on the back... :?

I was going to add a similar comment but for the life of me I couldn't remember what cars they were (Westminsters? or was that just on the ads?). Seem to remember some vauxhalls having some thing on the dash about power brakes.

You know those job sites where you knock out a CV and send it to them and they tell you if there's a suitable job on their system? Are all your details available to potential employers on the web or is it all kept quiet until/unless you apply for a vacancy?

Posted

More to the point, has anyone actually ever, ever got a job by filling in one of those forms?

This sounds like total BS to me but see what you think. Someone my wife works with broke down this morning in her Fiat Panda on the A12 when the car ran out of water, It turns out the oil filter hadn't been fitted right and it had been leaking all over a coolant pipe, corroding it and making it piss it's contends everywhere.

The man from the AA turned up and told her that she'll be ok as her car is a diesel and that you don't need water as much, if it was a petrol then it would be a different story as her engine would seize.

Now i would have thought water is equally important in a diesel as it is in a petrol engine, right?.

Posted

It all seems a bit bizarre, how does oil corrode a water pipe? Other way round maybe. Yes diesel engines do seize with a lack of cooling water* My experience here is limited to marine diesels.

+1. My old Land Rover 2.5 turbo diesel had various cooling problems and was more than capable of boiling itself. Whether a petrol engine would have expired any quicker I don't know, but asking whether you'd rather break down five miles from home or ten is almost as futile a question as whether you'd rather hit a truck or a tree at 70mph.

Some oils do tend to corrode some rubber, so if it was a rubber coolant hose it might be possible. Also, Fiat have had issues with some rubber hoses being made from a poor compound, and failing early, so that might have something to do with something.

Question: I was checking the BX's LHM level today and noticed the headlight glass had become completely separated from the rest of the unit. How it hadn't dropped out and been run over I do not know. What adhesive would you suggest - obviously needs to be water tight. I was thinking of using a hot glue gun, but heating up the glass too so it didn't all solidify before I get it together. I'd try silicone but don't have any.

Also, how would you clean the silvering inside? It's not bad, but has a few grubby splashes. I daren't touch it, I know it can be fragile.

Perish
That's the word I was looking for - 'precious' came up repeatedly. ERROR.

One thing I was going to say is that diesels DO run cooler than petrols, but I'd have thought water is still pretty important!

I would use an extra high bond double-sided tape rather than stuff in a tube if the lip is wide enough. But if you do choose to get everything covered in goo, don't press too hard and squeeze all of the sealant out of the joint. With a tape (the sort used for sticking number plates on is fine - I have used it to stick windows into boats) you will have to keep pressure on the glass for about twenty four hours while the adhesive cures. No matter how hard you press a tape you won't squeeze it out of the gap so you get a much better long-term solution.

I did mine on the Volvo with silicone sealant. The inside was buggered, put kitchen foil in - passed MOT the following day :)

I am not recommending this bodge by the way but the adhesive should be fine.

BX's are fairly well known for loosing their headlight glass, so much so that the previous owner of mine hoarded them then gave me loads with the car. So if you do loose the glass chuck me a PM and I'll stick a replacement glass in the post

Do air cooled cars still need to have different summer and winter oils?

Thank you chaps, very kind! I have glued this one in, seems secure and well sealed, so we'll see how it goes today.

I don't think so, I think that was back in the days of straight 30 oil & the like.

The handbook to my T2 bangs on for a couple of pages about oil, but in this country/climate 20W50 is OK.

Bit random, but bear with me please...

Newly acquired Chinese eletric scooter: lad I got it off said he had a puncture and got a Mobility shop to change the tube for him. Ever since then one side of the tyre suddenly comes off which obviously isn't too clever.

I re-fitted the tyre making sure it was lined up correctly then tried it again and the tyre opped off one side again. Once fitted and inflated it seems ok and doesn't try and jump off the rim so I'm led to ponder two things: wrong sized tyre or wrong sized tube. If it was the former surely if it goes on ok and looks right, how far wrong could it be, surely a 16" tyre is a 16" tyre, unless of course it's some badly made Chinese shit thing?

If it was the latter then could the wrong sized tube really cause one side of the tyre to pop off?

Thought please, thanks in advance!

could be a 15.5 or 16.5 inch wheel or tyre. Wouldn't expect it on a UK wheel but from a chinese market who knows ?
