Tried that but not without breaking things.

I had to abandon it yesterday so will head back this morning and try the electronic options.

Lesson 1: get spare keys cut.

What about a locksmith?

Found! Shorted the switch with a live feed and the keys were in a bag in the boot.

Why do modern brake drums on humdrum cars (peugeot 107 for example) have fins/ridges rather than a smooth outside like they always used to?

I thought it was for special regenerative brakes like Priuseseses have, but the rear brakes on a 107 won't do this will they? They can't get hot, so its logically not for heat disipation, strengthening ribs maybe?

They do get hot, bloody hot. Hence drum brakes used to fade on the front of cars.

My 'rents frog thing (I don't even know what it is) has them & this was the first thing I thought of when I noticed, turns out my dad thought of the same as he used to rally Minis.

I can understand on the fronts, especially on something driven hard like a rally-spec mini - but on the rear of a dismal 107? Doing ~10% of braking?

They do look similar to the 'minifins' puicture at the top.

Maybe it was the Toyota engineers that were responsible for designing that part? I can't imagine the fins costing a lot to put in as it's only a solid casting. Perhaps they are able to get away with smaller/thinner drums and use less material?

Fins are there both to increase tthe stiffness of the drum and to increase it's surface area to get rid of heat.

Good thing about rear drum brakes on small cars is that they cope better than discs with doing nearly nothing most of the time. And the handbrake is much easier to make very effective than with discs.

"Regenerative braking" on hybrids and electrics refers to the drive motor acting as a generator and pumping some of the kinetic energy of the moving car into the battery thus slowing the car a bit.

Regenerative braking has nothing to do with the brakes, although the brakes on hybrids can be made smaller than on conventional cars because they will be doing less work.

Any tips on a car windscreen sun shade that actually has a bit of quality about it and might last more than a season?

I've just remembered what my 'rents drive, it's a Renault Kadjur? and that's got finned drums on the rear. I know they don't do much work, but they are made smaller to allow for that so will run warm. Go for a drive n try licking one to let us know :D

Is Mazda's reputation for weak automatic gearboxes deserved?

I've just checked our thinking man's Renault Kadjar and it's got normal drums, quite big ones.

I know there's a few P38 lickers on here and this is pretty specific but it's worth a punt.

I've got one that's been sat on the drive for a month, dead battery, key code lockout, wait 30 mins, blah blah. That's fine - been here before. I'm doing everything in the sequence right, but I can't get the door lock to recognise that I'm trying to enter the code. Normally it beeps and flashes after every set of turns on the key, but this time it isn't doing anything. The only thing I can think of is that the driver's door switch has never worked - doesn't throw up a "door open" message on the dash and doesn't turn the courtesy light on when opened. Never bothered me, and to be honest it was quite nice not being beeped at every 5 seconds so I left it alone.

Is this the problem? I would have thought that if the door always thought it was closed, that the code could be entered without a problem? Or am I missing something?

Iirc there are microswitches in the lock which wear out. The light and the door open sounds more like the door switch - but I would hazard a guess that indicates the door switch is stuck closed which shouldn't upset the unlock mechanism.

This. However if you are near a phone mast it can confuse the system. It's a known problem on theses and Shaguars. Had to get my P38 recovered back to home last time. Soon as we got it back the fxxked started first turn of the key.

Can’t decide if it’s scaremongering or actual fact from the internet:

Can I jet wash the roof of my Astra convertible to get rid of the green sort of moss/lichen on it without causing any grief to the actual roof?

TIA M8s.

With a broad angle to the spray might be OK. Just wouldn't put max PSI on point at the seals. Probably a better idea than using some random chemicals on it.

You can, but I'd make sure you reproof it after (Fabsil or something) sell it before it rains.

Edited for Cavcraft.

We used to put our MK3 MX5 through the car wash. Never had any problems. Likewise green marks came off with a pressure washer just fine. Did that on the Smart Roadster too. Normal Autoglym car shampoo did a good job. Renovo is really good stuff for really cleaning deep.

Just don't point the jetwash at any rubber seals.

Exactly the same as my experience. Fixed the small chip, made the big one look slightly worse.

I have been doing battle with Mrs FL's C3 air con for some time and have now established that it needs the Compressor - Condenser pipe replacing. It appears it only comes as part of a £200 dealer only set and they all snap when attempted to be removed from a scrapper. Does any of the collective know of anywhere / anyone that would make one to order, even better does anyone have one in their supplies... (2003 model)

The Passat suffers from a bit of a drivetrain noise/vibration over bumps at high speed, I think it's probably a CV joint but how do you ID the suspect joint? No idea which side it's coming from.

Now this is a stupid question!

How are people insuring their LHD imports? I've had to insure the twingo on a temporary day policy at £40 for a bloody day. Literally running out of time and my normal insurance co seem to work 9-5 even though the website states 8-8! anyway that's perhaps a grump?!

Ye, I used it on a chip on a Serena, worked absolutely fine. I left feedback and the guy sent me a message that said 'Finally, someone who can read the effin instructions!'

Made me laugh. So when you do it, READ THE EFFIN INSTRUCTIONS! :)
