Are those cheap Bluetooth obd readers any good on ebay? Do they just give you generic codes or stuff you can use? What software do you need on your phone?

Its for an 05 Fiesta.

Course it's bollox. Bike had a scrape on the frame but I'd have ridden it no probs. Trashed engine made it better for me to claim though.

Point I was making is getting a no frame/bodyshelk reuse Cat B back on the road would be a ballache. Unless other doc's were available like!

Why would it be any different to putting any other write off back on the road? ID is never removed except when it is proved it doesn't belong to that vehicle.

The problem is getting hold of them / the insurers make it very very difficult for the public to get hold of them.

There is a brilliant piece of free software for Fords called Forscan.  Not all of the cheap adapters work on a Ford because ford uses a different protocol called PWM on different pins on the plug to other cars (which mostly use ISO).

The decent interfaces work but the nastiest Chinese knock off ones often don't.

Forscan is supposed to work with any ELM327 interface.  Personally I use a Scantool OBDLink SX and works perfectly with that.

If you search on ebay for Forscan cables there are cheap ones on there and I suppose as it explicitly says it will work you can get a refund if it doesn't etc.

He might be right you know - I don’t remember there ever being anything on the Gov website about write off categories etc. It’s maybe more official now.

Insurance categories may be utter horseshit but you are going to struggle to cheat the system.

Maybe you'll find a repairable Cat B. You'll fix it. To get it on the road you'll need insurance..... And at that point the funny handshake gang kick in.

No insurer is going to want to break the cycle and insure a Cat B, proving the system is nonsense

I do like that engine, I had a Mk1 superb before, it was the worst car I've ever owned, but the engine was fantastic and economy great for a big auto barge.

I like the Bora of that generation too.

EDIT - To that end, what's the thoughts on the Seat Leon with the same engine?

Much of a muchness tbh but less to choose from and perhaps not quite the same abundance of cheap/used spares.

Never fitted an exhaust before so please bear with me...

I've bought a two piece exhaust system cheap from ebay.

The back box connects to the long middle section with a metal gasket between two flanges held in place with three bolts. Pretty sure I can sort that.

The front section seems to be friction fitted to the cat pipe and then just clamped into place using a u bracket?

As far as I can tell I just need to separate the cat/front pipe join then pop off all the hangers and the rusty old exhaust should just fall to the ground?

I've got ramps, a couple of axle stands, new hangers/gaskets/nuts and bolts.

What are the odds of me and my Halfords 'Your toddlers first toolkit' being able to complete this job without any major fuckups?

All advice/tips/warnings gratefully received.

Fitting the new one is usually easy, getting the old rusty one off the car is the pain.

I've never managed to source exhaust parts any cheaper than just getting them fitted. You'll soon find how much rust in your eye makes fitting worth every penny.

How does one remove the headrests in a 1985 Jaguar Sovereign?

Do Rover SD1 headrests fit in 1985 Jaguars?

Rarely does swapping parts of exhausts work well. Cut it off into sections with the grinder, probably need new hangers as well. Forget undoing unions as well, they'll be rusted to fuck. Reckon on the exhaust being surprisingly hefty when you are working on your back as well.

Preassemble it before make sure it all fits, then take apart again and assemble front to back on the car, likely need some assembly paste, forget Gun Gum unless its this new formula they've made up, I use sikaflex for bits that won't seal.

Get ready for a shitty day and a sore neck if you are doing it on the driveway. Good luck.

This will be no help to you at all but here we go.

I replaced the Reliant one with some cheap ebay thing. It was a nightmare to get the old one off. The rubber hanger bolts to ages to get off. I was working on the car for hours on axle stands and felt sick.

I fitted it, it blew. Mate sorted it and asked why i not asked him to chuck it on for me. I then went back to collect the old exhaust and take it to the tip and reversed the Kia into the side of the house. Nice mark on the bumper that still there now.

Verdict - wish i had not bothered.

As has been said above. Fitting an exhaust isn't hard but it's a twat to get the old one off then ages laying on your back messing with the new one.

Get someone with a ramp to do it. It'll be done in a quarter of the time and save you getting pissed off.

And further to the above,

We’re i to buy that historic motorcycle, complete with nova certificate would it have to pass a mot to get registered with the dvla? Having been googling I am confused. It’s old enough to be mot exempt, but does it need one to be put on the system.?

If it did need a ticket I assume it would 60s standards as it’s a 60s bike and not some horrid Iva thing?

I'm selling a number plate to another forum member but I'm a bit confused as to what we are supposed to do with the retention document (V778). The buyer has paid and I have the new V5C for the vehicle that the plate came off of.

Before you've taken the old exhaust off get under the car compare it to the new one to make sure it's the same for length, bends and hangers.

Loose fit on the car first, when happy with the fit add all the sticky stuff and tighten.

I used a couple of car jacks (screwed pieces of wood on top so exhaust didn't slip off) along the length for support, easily adjustable.

Quick question. If I cancel my insurance and don't reinsure a car for 2-3 months, does my NCD disappear?

No, you should be OK with a gap of up to 2 years.

Unless it's a classic policy, they neither recognise nor award NCB so it disappears after 2 years  with a classic policy. Some insurers do recognise if you've had one though.

Which reminds me it's now 25 months since I insured a car :-(

Ask the insurer to park it with them so it go stale? That way it doesn't disappear.
