VW door locks, yeh i know, possibly the flimsiest and most troublesome door locks known to man.

A 2001 Polo 6N2, has had intermittent working central locking and the gubbins inside the drivers lock barrel were busted. I've rebuilt the drivers lock barrel and all seems to be working smoothly and changed the drivers door lock for a second hand unit. Put it back together and it was all working fine yesterday.

Today it isn't. I can't get the central locking working at all now and when the key is moved in the barrel it just seems to open the front electric windows and not much else. Using a flat blade i can manually lock and unlock the doors from the slot that the barrel usually sits in but i cant get it to work from key/barrel itself.

To me, it sounds like a problem with the central locking vacuum pump. The pump is in the boot, behind the trim panel on the offside.

These look quite rich yeah?

post-3886-0-58004200-1492436662_thumb.jpg

Van smells like it's running rich and can be very hard to start if you restart it when lukewarm. Winding it over with ECU disconnected (so no fuel) for 10 seconds or leaving it 10 minutes stood will get it to start again.

I've never had to read plugs before, most stuff I owned has had closed loop O2 control.

Anyone ever managed to rent a vehicle from Enterprise without having their photocard licence to hand? I can produce one of those check code things and passport / proof of address....

Posted

Yeah, years ago (1998?) before all this online nonsense and my paper licence was otherwise engaged. I think they'd just changed their name from National to Enterprise.

They telephoned the DVLA - I authorised them to speak to the rental clerk, handed over the phone back to the clerk and job jobbed.

Another time I rented in the 90s was from Avis in Mayfair, that there London. No credit card (with enough slack) for the deposit, guarantee card only went to £100 - I had to TransAx a cheque for 250 quid - plus come up with two referees to phone. Hard work on the Sunday in question as the first two were engaged and I was running out of numbers to call.

Sorry to sound like an auld cunt going on about how we used to do things before internet.

In a pool of water.

Which has soaked the circuit board and corroded all the connections.

(It's all coming back to me.....)

Cheers Ben. New ones are fitted, it does start easier. I have wound the idle CO screw out to lean the idle off as it was definitely stinking. It shouldn't affect off idle running much

A mate has a 1998(S) reg Freelander diesel L series?

He wants to know if it could be run on Veg.Is it possible?

Clio Mk2 1.2 16v. Won't start. I haven't checked the obvious yet like plugs and fuel but it is consistently doing something funny namely turns over for 2-3 seconds then stops. Short of hotwiring the starter it will do this but not actually attempt to fire up at any stage. I didn't think this was how the immobiliser behaved but I'm willing to learn. The bizarre positive battery terminal isn't helping either, is it needed? Read somewhere that part of it is a large fuse to protect something but that seems to be eccentrically unnecessary and Renault. Anyone have any further info please?

Edit: I am wondering if it is that 2nd "timer?" "comfort?" ECU that is playing up.

Halfords tools....

I have a rail of 1/2 inch drive male Torx bits. I think I bought the rail on its own, not as part of a set. Anyway, the T30 didnt respond well to use with an impact gun for some reason, and I dont know if these are "professional" tools or not - ie lifetime guarantee.

It just says "Halfords Chrome Vanadium" on it.

Any ideas?

Unhelpfully Anne Anorak responds:  most impact bits/sockets are black and those not rated for impact drivers are chrome.

They don't look like Advanced ones. They look like regular (mibbie Pro) Halfords ones from nineteen canteen.

They don't sell anything other than advanced 1/2" torx sockets any more I don't think so it'll still be worth a go I reckon

My goona used to do that when the ECU was just wet enough. Less wet just made things very random, more wet meant it played dead for days.

Except for the days it'd run for 2-3secs because it'd rained in Spain or something....

Basicly because renault - burn it.

Looks like the parcel is in the back of a transit.

They do it the wrong way up, the same as FB just to make it harder to read.

Ah now it makes sense pick up a parcel at Southampton 45 miles from my house take it to hatfield and then to Yeovil 25 miles from my house and then deliver it from there.... I guess that is progress.....

Yes but I'd ease into it and check/change the oil regularly. Bosch pump but direct injection so veg can pollute the sump

Not long back someone posted a high quality version of the Autoshite logo, anyone know where it was.

I've got a Pela pump, works lovely but for some reason I cannot get more than a litre or so out of Mrs Pirate's poxy Saab 9-3.  It's a 2001 model with the big yellow oil cap with dipstick attached.  The sump plug is rounded off and quite likely bonded in (alloy sump), so there's no other way in.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm doing it with the car level, would it be better to jack up the front?

Tube can't be going right down into the oil for some reason, can you tape it to the dipstick to get in it?

What is the part number for the tool kit for a Hoover Junior 119?

On the eBay threads, how do I embed the photos? I'm not posting links from eBay though; generally donedeal.ie

The links soon die as something sells, but the embedded photos live on; flicking back to page 1 of each thread is brilliant

Anybody?

Just a quick, and possibly stupid question, I have just placed an order for a wing mirror, and its stated as the RenaultTwingo-RH (Driver Side)- 1993 to 1995, now being a 1994 model the twingo was only ever available as a left hand drive car, its the actual drivers side glass I'm looking for but feel I have purchased the wrong side.

Some sump shapes don't help the suck it up method.

On my Puma you can only get 2 of 4 litres out through the dipstick hole.
