How about the engine in the FIAT S76 (the 'Beast of Turin')? 24 litres, 300bhp, made in 1911?

Bugatti made some nice looking engines as well, here's a Type 35, just look how simple it looks - no ugly castings, everything in it's place and the finish on it -

Chris Williams Bentley Napier. W12 24L 1917 Napier Sea Lion boat engine.This does the historic rounds of hillclimbs etc, I papped it at Harewood.

Cool is hard to define , but easy to recognize. Probably.

This is one of my favourite engines, but admittedly it not the looker I thought it was in my mind's eye.

Here's another spectacular Edwardian engine, what was it with those boys? What were they drinking? In this case it's aboard a Lorraine De Dietrich, 16.5 litres contained in 4 cylinders! A competitor to the 'Beast of Turin' above, driven by people with knackers bigger than mine.

And here's another superbly made engine - just look at it, the attention to detail, the finish, why can't it be like this today? It's a 6 cylinder, OHC, 7982cc 194 hp Hispano Suiza engine from 1928.

The car is called the dawb6. A machine shop owner in Ireland fancied making his own car so he did. Apart from the glass, gauges and other small sundries, he made it all himself or by his machine shop. This includes that engine - a flat six air cooled motor mounted transversely fuelled by triple twin choke side drought Webbers. The drive to the (he built that too, naturally) gearbox was via a chain at the centre of the crank.

When it was finally completed, he drove it for a year or so then parked it up and moved onto his next project - a yacht.

It’s still in Ireland, now on display at the ulster folk and transport museum. I’ve been to see it and to this day, it is the most awe inspiring car I’ve ever seen.

 

Not only that

 

It made 136bhp. From 1.4 litres! That gives a specific output of 97bhp/litre! For comparison, the Aston Martin DB4 GT, which was the fastest car in the world when the DAWB was completed, only had 65hp/litre. No production car got close to the DAWB 6 in terms of specific output

 

Looked lush too.

To be honest, I'm at the point where any functioning engine that completes a journey = coolest looking engine

 

Currently I'm coveting the 1.6 in the Picarsole..

I can't see that in a car myself.  What am I saying, one of those mahoosive modern US pickups might actually be strong enough to hold a Baby Deltic up

How about the 1905-6 Adams-Farwells, with their 3 and 5-cylinder rotaries.  That is 'rotary' as in the externals too.

 

 

Mesmerising.  So it must be a contender?
