What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

By the way, what's worth a Grin is that we CAN have a debate (rather than an argument) on here without resorting to petty name calling. I might disagree entirely with WTC, but I still respect his view.

Agreed. Having a healthy debate without resorting to name calling was most refreshing.

This post has made me grin more than a Cheshire cat!

Long live AUTOSHITE and its abilities to accept different viewpoints.

I can imagine an Autoshite fight would be quite funny. You would offer them out and arrange to meet in the car park. When you go there, both parties would end up fawning over some mk5 escrote with rubbish wheel trims and dealer plates and all arguments would be forgotten :D

This is purly an observation, nothing else, but i remember back to the sixties, seventies and early eighties when everybody drove to the pub. People wouldn't dream of catchin a bus walking etc. Do you remember in the late eighties when they started to rigeriously[spelling] enforse the alcohol limit and rural pubs started closing all over due to the drop in customers. This all came about because every Christmas with office parties, the "works do" etc people were getting well plastered an driving home etc. and the accident rate used to soar at this time of year.

Remember this is just an observation of events, NOT an opinion.

Remember that. Some people I knew also insisted that no matter how hammered they were if they left the pub at 9.50pm and drove home they'd never get pulled because the police swapped shifts at 10.00pm.

I've taken to mountain biking again after a 20 odd year break. Been messing about in the forest for the last few weeks for a few hours on a Sunday morning using a bike they were going to chuck in the skip in work. It's an old British Eagle Razorback known by the lads who I go biking with as "The Panzer" because it's not the lightest thing in the world but it just keeps on going. Bloody knackering trying to get it up hills.

Thing is, it's been quite good fun for me because about 15 years ago I bought a bloody expensive large 7005 alloy frame British Eagle mountain bike (I got it half price at close to £600) and ended up flogging it to a mate after a year because I'd not been using it. British Eagle bikes were bloody good originally, until the name was sold to ASDA or someone and ended up on all kinds of old tat. My old one, which I loved despite not using it much at the time was one of their top quality early ones, light as anything, strong, with all a top spec Shimano gear set and brakes.

A few weeks ago I'm talking to another mate of mine, when he mentions he's got an "old mountain bike that needs going to the tip", because his brother in laws dogs had been chewing it in the back garden. As his brother in law is the chap I sold my old bike to I asked him "is it silver with huge tubes?". When he replied that it is, and that I could have it if I could do anything with it I couldn't get to his house to pick it up fast enough.

Today I finally got the bloody thing all back together and working. I doubt it's done 50 miles in its life. Original tyres (needed new tubes), original gears etc etc. Just need a new saddle and handlebar grips for it, but I'm absolutely chuffed to have finally had another go on the thing.

Sunday I'll take it to the forest and finally use it for what it was built for. Can't wait :)

Yup, remember that too, It's just reminded me of a pub near a police station in SOT that used to have a lock-in most nights. It was very popular with local plod comming off shift for a late beer. Well they must of upset somebody who knew about this regular occurance because one night plod from the next town closest to the pub pulled 7 of them over and did em for drunk driving............ Happy days

Shove up a photo of the MTB Pete....I still have my 96 Carrera Gravity that is probably very similar.

I may have to meet up sometime, used to do about 10 miles every day but that was in a life before kids! Is it Delamere you go to?

I have a 1998 Univega Ultralite. It has the worst seat \ tyre combination in the known universe, akin to driving a Mk2 Astra GTE 16v shod with No Kum Suk Ditchfinders (aka Nankang NS-2s) and 'pressing on a bit'.

Today was also the first day of full lectures at Media City as my department has finally moved over. I'm trying to work out the most cost effective means of getting there. The tram's winning at the moment, because Salford in their infinite wisdom decided not to buy any car parking spaces. You can park in The Lowry shopping centre block, but it's £13. A day. Not great when I have 9 hours of contact time on a Friday, plus whatever group sessions I need to go in for. I understand why there's enormous gaps in my timetable now - it's so we can get our Channel M feature produced, filmed and edited. I have virtually no background in TV so the learning curve is near-vertical. Some of my course mates are third years with a humbling amount of production \ directorial experience. Still, I chose this module because I wanted to get some idea of the process behind TV production - to date all of my experience is in radio, and to a lesser extent, print.

So I've got to learn Final Cut Pro, as I've been tasked with editing everything together. That's a 9 minute package with a filmed studio segment. Oh, and my director's worked with Ang Lee, so no pressure there then. I have a feeling I'm probably going to lose my mind over the next nine weeks, but I'll come out of it a better person.

I'm still not buying a Mac though.

Also, my pile of old CAR magazines arrived, together with my Bosch Knick 180s. My Centrelines have sold, as have the Exactons to a certain London based 222S owner. When I sell off the second pair of Knicks, I'll have made the money back plus £100 or so.

Saw a Talbot Horizon in use last night! Light metallic blue with a spoiler, possibly B903... (maybe a Coventry reg). It looked vaguely familiar.

Me too. I dug my old Carrera Krakatoa out after a 16 year hibernation, and most of it worked as it did when I last used it. Took the missus to buy her a bike and ended up buying a brace of Forme Rage bikes (his and hers, we'll look like we won the "generation game") from a little old fashioned bike shop in Attleborough. Last year's model, so got a mahoosive discount and tonnes of accessoroes for free. Bit sad to see the Carrera retired though.

Went to a load of shops to buy a roof rack and cycle carriers and was shocked to shit to find out the cheapest way of buying these was a main dealer accessory from Mercedes Benz!!!

Main grin of the day won't find much favour here, but I have just signed on the line for my next daily (despite the dreaded P11D implications). Company Car arrives in November

If you are doing the trail centres let me know, I will meet up. I go once a month or so somewhere round the country.

On another fitness (hah!) Point. I just did a 12k assault course round Nottingham. Not got my time yet but after spending most of my time on here whilst drunk for the last fortnight when I should've been training it'd not going to rock my world. Just slowly dissolving my liver with cider now.

Wilfred is bloody brilliant.

In other things that make me grin. Bought a load of bits for Ye Olde Mountain bike today. New gear and brake levers (Shimano stuff that's not available separately) , cables, a set of decent handlebar grips and a gel saddle. £75 bloody quid.

However, the bike rocketh mightily again now and I'm gonna go and injure myself on it at 8 am. Woo! Can't wait.

Hadn't you better go and get some sleep then? Don't want to be falling asleep at the handlebars...

I went around my mates today to have a look at his new toy he got this afternoon, It's a 1969 Taunus 20M RS with the 2.3 V6 engine, We think it's the only RS in the UK, what fun it is though.

It's been a long time since I've been passenger in a left hooker which feels very strange at first!, It need quite a few jobs doing to it, It's been chaved a bit, the front wheels rub, the bucket seats aren't very secure and it has some shit metal plate on the passenger floor and the worse thing is that reverse doesn't go in very well, we suspect it's a worn gear linkage, Still, I'm pretty jealous, We went for a cruise along Felixstowe seafront this evening and it turned a lot of heads!

You want to look into those prepaid weekly/monthly passes they do. It's a nightmare sprinting for the tram and have to fight with the machine to get a ticket before the tram buggers-off without you. Just don't do what I did and loose the bastard the day you buy it. £100 down the pan and I still had to pay for a months travel :(
