What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Despite my anti-monarchy leanings, I've had a great afternoon at the village street party. Pretty sure that many of the attendees couldn't give two hoots about the goings on in London too but whatever people's thoughts, it was great to have a real sense of community. And cake. Lots of cake.

I have to say though - given that this is the Royal Family, could they not afford to get a rear number plate made up in a nice, classic font?! Or did Harry buy it on Ebay? I'd say that William's done alright for himself too.

Finding these at a car boot yesterday, then looking on eBay & seeing one exactly the same as the green Jeep sell for £112

I have a Beetle somewhere like that, all plastic aren't they?? Whats the make coz I haven't seen mine since we moved!

At first I thought they were by Galanite (I have a very similar Saab 96) but they are made by another Swedish manufacturer, Tomte-Laerdal, left to right T17, T18 and T1.

This is the complete range, something for everyone here :D :

I think the Aston is Dads (IIRC he has owned it since new and in the 90s was looking into running it on LPG or somthing like that) The Firm must have ammassed quite a collection of old cars over the years, possibly with some shite interest. The queen kept a P5b for years, and theres a whole fleet of crusty land rovers at Balmoral

We saw a fair number of the fleet when we went to Sandringham a couple of years ago. Charles has a DB pedal car before he got the real thing.

I think Charles got it as a birthday present when he was 21 or something like that.

It runs on bioethanol.

Those plastic models are ace, I had the Land Rover pick up in blue when I was a kid, and 3 different coloured Peugeot 403 ragtops when I collected Peugeot models.

Having been out on the razz all day I unfortunately missed the wedding but I've just seen the hightlights and will watch it all tomorrow. The Aston was Charles', I think he took Diana away in it after they married.

Anyhow it looked like a great day and what a fantastic way to celebrate being British.

Ps: just as importantly (and make me extremely happy) is the fact Chester were promoted today as champions. I'd still be in town celebrating but I'm absolutely knackered and have to confess I'd have struggled to have drunk any more.

I caught most of the wedding on BBC Entertainment (was there ever a more mis-named channel?) but missed the Aston, think I was walking the dog at the time (not a euphemism). I did catch the flypast, that was special! You have to give the royals points, pageantry is something they're really really good at. Name me another country that could lay on something like that, getting most of the population behind the happy couple, including visiting foreigners and distant expats.

And yeah, Andy's daughter's hat was way past ridiculous! Which daughter was it anyway? She looked like the latest recruit to Teletubbies!

It was Beatrice. Just looked on Google and the hat has its own Facebook page.

Going through the text messages in the Jag's phone earlier. I gave the number out on facebook ages ago so people could send randomly amusing messages to it which I could read when stuck in traffic. Haven't switched the thing on for a while - the handsfree mic, wherever it is, isn't that good so it's only any use when I'm parked up really.

1st Text in the memory read (and it's the old Motorola scrolling screen job) was B O O B I E S .

Strange the way things can make ya giggle like a tit ain't it?

And gave her a right bollocking for sitting on the wing at -Ascot IIRC?

Daf drive by:

On approach to a roundabout I spotted this zooming around while I was in a queue about 5 cars deep.. Thought it was either a Daf or Volvo but wasnt 100%, I had to get a closer look.

Got to the roundabout, took a left and accellerated briskly to give myself a chance and thankfully the traffic lights were on red. Fuck it, may as well take a pic hadnt I.

With enough time to check the pic, was relatively pleased you could atleast see what I was trying to get.

But wait, he's 'going my way' and I'm now following it! It's going quite well again, at the speed limit anyway and the driver enjoying himself. I'll go for another pic, it'll probably be wank but it's a challenge and a bit of fun. No idea how bad it's going to be but I knew I'd got something.

DSC02614.jpg

Not that bad is it? A closer look:

DSC02614edit.jpg

I'm happy with that.

Anyway, about to OMG OVERTAKE RACE!!ONE!1

CRAZY skills got this:

DSC02615.jpg

..And now, overtake almost complete. The two lanes merge into one, I'm ahead and put my indicator on and get in front. I put my hand up and wave and the driver acknowledges with a smile and a kind of raised hand and point.. The leading car wouldnt have usually seen this - it was just one of those old bloke automatic reactions; however I did see it because I was being a geek and watching him almost as much as the road ahead.

Has he gone..? No, he's on my tail:

DSC02616.jpg

Oh no, he's falling back..

DSC02618.jpg

Agh, is it even him? Maybe an imposter..?!?! Trying to hide behind that mysterios black bar perhaps.

DSC02618edit.jpg

No, it's him alright.

He stayed behind for another couple of miles, staying at 55-60 and then turned off, without slowing much.

Been given 97 GB of music to listen to by a colleague at work.

So far, so good.

Wandered into Cash Converters today on the off chance they might have some decent DVDs in stock. They didn't, but at the end of the usual row of hideously overpriced mountain bikes there was one for £29.99. This aroused my interest, as the bike I use to ride the last couple of miles into work and back is pretty much fucked. Sales assistant wanders over, I enquire as to why it's so cheap. Apparently it's just a bit of an old bike. Doesn't look too old to me - it has 21 gears and front suspension and everything. So I bought it, and it rides like a new bike. It's so nice to be able to put some pressure on the pedals without the chain jumping. Should cut 5 minutes off my journey into work, giving me 5 minutes extra in bed - worth the 30 quid on its own.

I thought 96GB was an astounding amount, but it turns out I have 50GB of music.

Indeed!

The thing is, what I've got off him is virtually nothing in the scheme of things. He brought in two three terrabyte hard drives. The 97GB he gave me was all that could fit on my [two] external hard drives that were scrounged from old computers. The 97GBs-worth I did get were deemed to be 'the best bits', according to my colleague.

Cash Converters

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to their pricing. I was looking through their website for camera stuff (I think any branch will post stuff to you) and there were some mega bargains among the £150 Vivitar point-and-shoots.

Cash Generator is mildly better than Cash Converters, but the pricing is generally all over the joint and there's some stuff which is unlikely to ever shift - I found some Philips CD-i games there the other week.

Wondering around the Sainsbury's carpark today, I came across an old lady parking a M-plated Rover Metro Rio Grande in one of the spaces. I got talking to about it and she was telling me how every now and again she cleans up and paints the rear arches (with acryllic paint) to keep rust at bay, she admitted that it wasnt very good work, but this kind of got me thinking, these days you wouldnt see an old dear taking real care of her own car to a point where she is cleaning and painting the rear arches. At this point Mother_Sterling came over and joined in the conversation, now to see 2 ladies talking about motors in unreal!

Also, had been watching a few old 1985 episodes of The Bill came across one funny episode where DI Galloway got fed up of his Beige Cortina and traded it in for a Beige mk2 Cavalier L Auto!

I was reading an old (early 80's) custom car mag this afternoon, I found a "Dateline" advert where they boast that their supercomputer has TWO 4MB hard-drives on which they store all your data while finding your perfect partner. Except they don't call it a Megabyte, they say "Four million bytes of data"

This made me lol quite a lot, but seriously I can remember when a 1.44MB floppy disk seemed huge (compared to the 220k ones)

At school a friend of mine Rik had an Amiga A1200 with a 20MB hard drive. It seemed well massive and incredible at the time.

Wasn't KITT 1GB? Totally unthinkable for the time, like.

A gig and they still gave it a gay voice.
