What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

23.30 last night M25 near Maple Cross.

For 3 miles there had been a gradual closing of the outside 3 lanes, you know the sort of thing arrows then eventually big red crosses, leading up to a tapering row of cones and flashing lights.

Traffic was relatively light and everyone had duly filed into lane 1, I say everyone..

A red Focus comes barrelling up the 2 nd lane thinking he can beat the guys putting out the cones, the cone man literally throws a cone in front of the Focus who is next to me doing about 60 , I of course hold my position and put my hand flat on the horn to add to the drama.

In the mirror I see the Focus hit the cone dead on and bits of plastic, presumably grille and bumper, flying everywhere .

Now that's teamwork! I swear I could hear the cone guys cheering.

Stansted airport appears to be taking its heritage seriously and the announcements are all now read in an Essex accent. :D

Passed a house in Sheffield earlier - two tone Alfa 165 on the drive, and a Merc W115 and an SVX outside

I saw those as well! Didn't take a snap. It was outside one of our Tips on Longley Avenue West.

I think cort mentioned it somewhere in the moderns section, but I can't find his comment again.

Hoovie's Garage on youtube. It's highly amusing to watch... mainly because it isn't my money! He buys the cheapest Bentley Continental in the USA and finds out its very colourful history in a couple of videos. :D

Just arrived in the US for a holiday...The sound of V6 and V8 engines burbling away everywhere with the occasional straight six thrown in for variety...that is making me grin all right!

It's good to have furniture that's open about it's preferences

When I was over in Canada in July I kept turning round at the sound of a huge burbly V8, thinking it was a muscle car. 9 times out of 10 it was a battered old pickup truck full of tools. :D

Went to Halfrauds this morning after work, to get a rattle can for a little job at home, and a brake light blub for Giffer.  Of course you can only buy them in pairs, which I didn't mind.  So I went outside to fit the blub and a couple of spaces away a chap was trying to fill a bottle in his Golf.  Not sure now if it was screenwash or coolant but anyway, from the 5litre bottle he'd bought, it was going all over the place.  I had a 500ml Pepsi bottle I'd almost emptied, so I drank the last bit and presented it to him, with an exhortation to go and borrow a sharp knife and cut the bottom of it off.  Instant funnel.  He was delighted.

Just need to stick a mic to a post near a busy intersection here and record a few hours of audio, instant good background music for a petrol head!

The other thing that's downright hilarious here is that with the lack of an MOT here, the number of cars driving around with completely *missing* sills (never mind rotten) is astonishing. Have seen a few pickups where the body appears to be holding the chassis together as well, if the obvious bow in the middle is anything to go by!

We were in Savannah GA back in 2009 and noticed the same thing.  Our motel was on a corner, a 4-way intersection with the swimming pool shielded from the road by a thin fence.  Needless to say our quiet lazy afternoon was anything but!  As soon as I sat down I'd hear another burble, and leap up in search of the Dodge Charger it must surely belong to.  They were, of course, scabby work trucks every time.

Last time we were here we had a Chevy AstroVan as our transport...that was V6 powered, but despite being only a V6, it was something like 4.6 litres in size, and with such a long stroke had enough torque to tow an ocean liner from idle. ...it also made a truly lovely noise when you were just burbling around town.

...the result when you put your foot down was somewhat startling though, as the noise that then came from the exhaust did a passable impression of that from an old Detroit 6V71, the thing reared up and then took off like a scalded cat.

I'd really have liked to take that back home with me as its driving style suited me so well and it was so, so comfortable.

That would be the 4.3, like I had in my infamous Blazer.  You probably got one at a better stage in its life than I did.  There's no shortage of Astros over here, you know; in fact there are three or four just in Barrow!  I heard one passing by work this morning, it did sound lovely.

Was a pretty clean old beast. 98 if I remember rightly, had a slightly touchy cold start system but otherwise ran lovely. Had a little rust in the sills but nothing drastic.

Problem I found looking over in the UK is that - aside from them all being expensive at the time - was that they were all the "day van" versions, rather than the standard one we had. I'd prefer that to be honest, as while still stupidly comfortable by UK standards, is far more flexible I think as it's easier to add/remove seats etc.

I really did think that was a euphemism , in fact I was just about to suggest Binky Time to MrsN who is half way through a bottle of Merlot. Probably more chance of her watching a YouTube video of somebody fabricating shit for an old Mini, at the moment

I'll wait till the other half a bottle has gone

Next door neighbour was struggling with the bottom arm on his PT cruiser. Two ratchets had been killed and six foot pole had not moved the BFO bolt at the back. I offered the services of my Clarke electric torque wrench. Thirty seconds later, job done. Two other bolts that were not going anywhere succumbed to its power, five minutes later the arm was off.

Saw an LDV Convoy minibus with a VW T25 Westfalia fibreglass top grafted onto the roof today.  Impressive.  Can't get the photograph off my camera at the moment otherwise I'd share.
