Wonder if there's a pre-Xmas crackdown going on, since I've seen a lot of cars around here (yep, usually Zafiras and Astras) sitting there with a clamp and notice on the windscreen

Fucking hope so - we all abide by the law so why should anyone get away with it

Yeah, I mustard mitt the 2% sympathy I felt for the woman getting busted as she came out of Argos with bags bursting with presents over the lack of £10 a month tax or whatever evaporated when she opened her gob.

And I'll just take this opportunity to leap in before anyone that's going to correct my use of the word tax to "VED" or whatever. Have a beer ;)

It could happen to any of us at any time. I have no idea if my car is taxed at the moment. I know I paid for a full year, because I'm not radge enough to set up a DD with DVLA, but without checking daily I won't know if it's fallen off the database somehow.

Was on our way to southwold in the bright sunshine for a day on the beach in the rover p4, there was some terminal sounding noises coming from the engine bay and the generator light came on, pulled over to find what looked like a snapped fan belt all mangled up.

Weirdly, the belt had split into two separate belts, an outer layer with make and part number about 3/8 thick was wrapped around the fan, some white nylon string wrapped round the pulleys and then I was left with a belt 3/8 thick still attached but slack as fuck.

Untangled the mess and started it up and it was working fine with its "half belt"

Good old p4, had a good day in the sun and then watched the Christmas lights switch on and mulled wine etc and drove home in the dark wth lights on and only a glimmer of warning light.

I think it could well be. I've picked up a couple of cars that had seperate SatNav arrangements, but not quite as elaborate as the Yaris pictured.

I don't things just "fall off" a database. Without going back to filing cabinets full of paperwork I don't think the risk of a computer error now is any greater than it was before monthly payments, especially for you since you're paying for a full year and that process hasn't changed one bit.

It's just now easier for people to cancel a DD when they need to go and buy the kids fourteen XBoxes to go with their 50" TVs for Christmas.

Essentially, this is turning into a rant about how people treat having a car as a right rather than a luxury so I'll quit now.

I am sure for some people it's a genuine mistake, but the they tend to be apologetic not abusive when said mistake is discovered.

I don't like the only thing between my car and a HIAB being the say-so of a notoriously inefficient, incompetent and possibly dishonest organisation. There may not be any more risk of computer error (although I think there is because there is more going on now) but you no longer have the safety net of a tax disc. If the computer says you're not taxed nothing can keep your car out of the pound.

I tax more cars than any average person and also hold a set of trade plates (which I still pay for by cheque, no more modern payment method is available for that at present)

Never had any problems. Strongly suspect that problems with DVLA are directly linked to attempts to outsmart them and avoid paying tax which I've heard several stories of.

To be fair I got done in 2002 for having no RFL on an Escort van that had 5 months "rent" as it used to be known showing as a valid tax disc on the windscreen, the seller had obtained said disc with a bouncing cheque so it was never actually valid, back in those days there was no way of checking this so the "Taxed and Tested" price that I paid was somewhat inaccurate, the DVLA were not sympathetic so not much changes really.

This happened to me - bought a car, completely forgot about taxing it, got clamped. Obviously I was pissed off and embarrassed about it, but it was my own stupid fault. Some people just think the world owes them.

The world revolves around databases that correctly hold information. If they were that unreliable you'd have a conviction for armed robbery, your mortgage would be for three trillion quid and you'd never get paid.

The only difference is now it's easier to detect tax evasion, it was probably more common to try back in the day when it was down to the local bobby spotting your wrong coloured bit of paper.

Hardly ever hear of mistakes in tax, you hear lots of evasion though with claims of mistakes.

The problem is with the severity and speed which the DVLA/police act and there being a lack of compensation if they make a mistake.

There are mistakes in tax all the time, I doubt that any adult can say they have never had to phone the Inland Revenue or argue with the person who does their wages. There are also mistakes in police records, banks and payroll departments. They usually get sorted out in the end, but it can take time and energy.

The difference with the DVLA is that the first you know of a problem is when you find your car has been clamped or impounded and there's no option to argue about it, other than shouting at the perpetrator.

If your ever in Nottingham get to bulwell and a motor home place called Glenn's.

It's so full of tat I seem to go about once a year now just for a browse. Old Renault extras for £7995 etc that are rotten and worth £95, full of talbots and smelly caravans.

But the prize of best shed goes to this.

The Dart ran flawlessly again despite not being used for a couple of months. It does have an annoying wheel wobble at 45mph but above or below that it's fine. I suspect that the front end needs a complete rebuild but some of the bushes are press in, others are screw in and require a special tool of which there are 2 sizes.

For what it's worth the process is detail here http://www.moparmax.com/tech/2011/vi_11-torsiontips-1.html but it reads like a PITA.

I'm relieved. I went out on a bike ride to Newton-Le-Willows on Friday, and from a hill outside Leigh I saw this:

We aren't all dead so it was just a very odd coincidence I think.

I think you posted the wrong photo, Jake.  Or, you typed an erroneous "not" in the caption...
