My GLE was definitely a carb. Worse MPG than Concorde and less reliable than talk talks fire wall.

New battery fitted and disco lights have stopped. No more flickering lights either

Next on list is speed sensor and IACV both of which are a bit of a pain to change.

SP cars have had the bogey for over two weeks now so I enquired if it was all done (they said two weeks) and it's not... :(  So far they have: replaced the steering rack, done the rear spring pan, and done the boot hinge! They are stripping out the front suspension today.

Bloody hell, that's not even a dent in the list that needs doing. At this rate, it should be in storage for winter foc!

Must be bored with the Saab daily as I am off to see a red 1.6 Mitsubishi Lackofcharisma in non mot 1.6 pez form tomorrow.....

Interesting video.

My GLE has injection though - seems you get a "GLE Injection" model.

I do prefer carbs in general but this is working okay so I'll leave it be.

I know dude. I was just illustrating that inj has a bit more grunt than carb, which backed up your figures from earlier.

I never had any bother with my GLE carb. Suppose there's good and bad examples of both. My carb always gave better mpg than my injection too.

Mate of mine had a Volvo GLT thingy, 2 litre injection hatch and it flew! It was a proper fun car and could hang its tail out with gay abandon!

Bought a shit looking ZX estate off of ebay in a fit of Dugong/Fuxhake inspired jealousy.

In a strange turn of events, my mother in law is taking me on a collection mission on Saturday...

Got the Rover about 4 months ago now.  I had expected to have got bored of it, in all honesty, for it to be a bit of a cheap fling before I punted it on for the next car to take my fancy.  That hasn't happened.  If anything I've grown more fond of it the longer I've had it and the more I've asked it to do.  The last car I had this reliable was the old Maestro.

What's even stranger is that the longer I've had it, the less cheap it's felt.  That's not just me getting used to it either, when I get in other cars they don't feel as... pleasantly middle class.  I don't know what it is about it, something to do with the combination of Rover and Honda build quality and aesthetic is just really, really, satisfying.  Like a really well made pair of shoes that you've worn in just so.  Comfy slippers.  Cable-knit jumper.  It's that sort of a thing but without feeling like a fusty elderly relative's damp chintzy living room.

Only problem this has generated is getting The Fear that if it dies on me one day I shan't be able to replace it with something as nice to live with.

^^ Of course you will. I have a nice 214Si that would fill that potential Rover gap at some point.

Vulg in shock contentment! I know how you feel,my 1974 Honda C90 was only meant to be a stop gap while I decided what to do transport wise, that was March,I'm now set for going through the winter on it!

more than 130 fires

Vauxhall said it had taken engineers some time to investigate the issue, as many of the vehicles they examined had been damaged "beyond investigation".

Letters will begin to go out to owners from 12 November

Bit late aren't they

"The company said faulty repairs to the heating and ventilation system were probably to blame."

"Customers will be offered a free inspection and repairs."

Independant mechanic on da newz recommends owners to not use the heater blower.

Vauxhall are springing into action by sending letters out by the 12th of November.

Still on a crazyhigh from meeting someone at the weekend. Suddenly switched to "outgoing & confident verging on arrogant" mode. Just remembered we had a conversation about my never having had cocaine (str8edge, yo(uth)) right before she got me a drink.

Pretty sure cocaine surely doesn't last a week. So I'm still confident it's <3

But. If this IS what cocaine is like, god-DAMN, I'd own the fucking world by now.

(Shit. Maybe it was spiked. Still, cheap hit if it lasts this long).

How many hours have you spent in the hearse?  Could be some of Panhard's charm and confidence rubbing off on you through the velour and steering wheel.

Damnit, I even took precautions doing the handshake with a prophy...prog... prosthetic.

Cheers will check battery tomorrow.

Is there a benefit to smart charge? Could you just keep it unplugged?

The benefit of this is that a battery can take a higher rate of charge when cold so it is my undertanding that the smart charge system takes a reading from the engine temp and adjusts the charge accordingly, useful for keeping the battery topped up on short drives. I drove my wifes fiesta around for some time with it unplugged and a normal lead acid battery and there were no ill effects. The Ford manual has little info on this and when I typed the reg into ECP's part website it just recommended a normal battery which melted after about a month. Hence I found out about smart charge and Calcium batteries. I got from local factors for about £70 at least 6 months ago with 3 year warranty. No problems since.

A day of mixed progress. I had to drive into town to cash the tax refund on the Dyane. Annoyingly, I was in town yesterday but it arrived after I'd left the house. Executed a near-perfect parallel park in the XM - no mean feat. WINNAH.

But, Mytyres seems to be struggling to actually send me the tyres for the Perodua. I'm now in a vague waiting game until they tell me what's going on. Or I cancel my order. PHAIL.

I now have all the brake bits I need for the XM - discs, pads and a new slider with boots. WINNAH.

It's pissing down with rain and I lost the brake bits in a fight with our cat. PHAIL.

I also did a new video thing. I'll leave you to judge whether that's PHAIL or WINNAH or just plain MEH.

I think you hit Bangernomics nail on the head there.  Buy cheap, buy well, spend sparingly and enjoy affordable reliability.  That sea of sub-£500 crap is a tough one too, the internet is its own worst enemy when offering you choice in that category and you really do have to shovel through so much detritus to get to anything worthwhile.  Sometimes it seems like it's pure luck when you do find something worth going for as it can take a very long time indeed to find it.

At the minute you seem to have got it just right with the Nippa and the XM, in fact that big Citroen has made me eat my words on what you should expect from an XM at the price you paid, it really has been surprising.  The Nippa not so much, they were cheap new, they're cheap now and there's still enough of them about to get really nice quality ones without too much hassle.

A bit of knowledge helps too, of course.  Actually knowing your enemy when you're buying cheap is really valuable stuff and can save you a lot of grief.  Even with more complex modern cars, if you know the vehicle's expected use-by date on parts and what faults you can safely ignore you can still get surprising bargains.

All in all, good video that.

I agree with Vulga, it was a really good explanation of what Bangernomics is and how to do it properly. Your knowledge and enthusiasm come across really well, so thanks for sharing and keep them coming.

PS: Loving the hat, not all men can successfully rock a "titfer" :)

Thanks folks! I'd forgotten to take the hat off. It was an essential bit of kit in my previous 'investigative' Vlog. If you like it, please do share. Who knows. Maybe at some point I'll be able to fund an actual camera.

Apologies there WW, wasn't doubting you was just trying to confirm to myself that the model existed.

I discovered it doesn't have power steering (It's quite light but there's no pump), so that will be one difference from a GLT.

Though personally I prefer non PAS.

Nice cars too, I think I have those alloys that are on the carbed one on my 340.

I'm liking this car a lot.

It's a mk1 so there will have been GL, GLE and GLTs.

The GLT was specific spec with spoiler, hatch body graphics, alloys and injection (no pas). I'm pretty sure the rest were a free for all spec wise. Pretty sure the mk2s were all GLE carb and GLT inj. Not that it matters at all.

Mk1 GLTs are hens teeth. Only ever seen 2 for sale.

I sold these new, Intro Sep 83 GLE/GLEi started as saloons only, hatchbacks were GLS/GLT Intro Sep 82. Then hatchbacks became GL instead of GLS Oct 85 and GLE instead of GL Aug 1987. 3 door finished sooner than 5 door, GL carb about 1986 and GLT inj about 1987. The face lift bumpers were Oct 1985 for 1986 model year.
