The old Mercedes SE I bought last week finally came home today, towed somewhat steadily by a friend with a Freelander. I had a good poke around after week wondering what exactly I had bought, the answer as usual was not quite what I thought although not too bad.

It came supplied with an exhaust section to replace the knackered one, this v expensive genuine MB bit wasn't the section that is snapped though..... It also has a medium sized lake in the rear passenger footwell, presumably from the sunroof although both rear drains are clear so any suggestion welcome

I've not looked the brakes yet but the only MOT fails I've seen and not done are the exhaust and a ball joint boot, it is looking a bit crusty under the battery tray but I'll leave alone for the moment unless forced.

Cleaning it out yielded 70p, 7 shit biros, poison and mouse shit under the back seat and rat shit under the bonnet!

All in a good day, 7/10, room for improvement

Swapped the panzerwagon for pictures of queens head. Guy who bought it was over the moon and is going to restore it.

 

Sadly the queens heads will be spent paying someone to fix our leaking roof rather than on fine automobiles.

 

In other news the fogger bomb thing has definitely replaced the funky smell in the focus. Now smells quite nice.

Passenger seat ecu has died. £350 for the part.

 

The car isn't even here.

 

I have never used the passenger seat.

 

I should NOT  ask anyone to check for 'any other faults while you're at it'...

Can you just leave the seat where it is and adjust the passenger to fit it? (I had to do that with my Lotus 7, somehow I managed to make myself fit, as there was no adjustment to anything other than me)

That was extremely soothing pre-bedtime viewing. It's a shame in some ways when you see the test cars and mules get crushed, but absolutely necessary. When I visited the Rolls Royce factory a year or so ago we went past 1 of the paint test shells. That too is destined to be crushed and thought for a while, poor RR. But it never was one, and never will be, it was just a piece or several pieces of formed metal and any fool can do that!

Re the Merc SE leak. Check the windscreen seal. I had one that did the same and I spent ages fucking around with the sunroof to cure the leak and finally sealed the bastard up. It still leaked just as badly!

 

It was rust in the windscreen frame, cured with silicone and a new windscreen (I cracked the old one taking it out!).

The Merc has the deep end of the lake in the footwell behind the passenger seat so the windscreen iis not an obvious choice but I'll bear it in mind. The carpeted section of the centre console under the armreast is soggy as well so I'm pretty sure that at least must have dripped in. Thr roof doesn't seem to park properly and I haven't checked the front draains yet so early days, my main priority is getting an exhaust fitted and taking it for it's first MOT since 2008. It does need sorting though, I don't want the floor falling out and it stinks!

Sure I red somewhere that the test mules can't be sold/registered due to VAT rules. Something to do with not being able to claim the tax back on development costs which can run into the £millions.

RE the w126- other possible points of entry for water- look under the parcel shelf from the boot, it its rusty then the rear screen seal may be leaking. Also the sunroof drains may be rotten in parts, you can take the trim off the roof pillars to investigate.

I just had a thought, is that the same side you were saying there was something wrong with but you couldn't put your finger on?  I wonder if perhaps it's the tyre that was on its way out and the puncture killed it off.  You driving on it for above a mile certainly made sure you killed it to death.

Yeah and it's funny that, the issue is now on the other side front .. I think the tyres are separating on the inside (it's a thing that can happen especially when they get old)! Guess I need a front set ... Wanlang ditch finders ftw!

What brand were on there chompy?

They were winter tyres and I put them on about 18 months ago from Arnold Clark in Dunfermline.

 

Will be quieter as well I think.

So, against my better judgement I bought some new ratchet straps from eBay. I usually get them custom made at an independent lifting gear yard but tried to save some cash.

 

Arrived yesterday and they were trial fitted this morning. Between me putting the rover on, turning around and reversing up, 2 failed. Both on the rear, you can kind of see in this pic.

 

 

You definitely get what you pay for shiters. Off to my local place this morning to get some made up!

 

Oh and the winch has packed in. Bastards. That was my local place who put a new wire on recently. They can sort that today.

Tyreleader has the best choice, Petlas, Ovation, Goform, Superia, Constancy just some of the names I've never heard of. I have heard of Ling Long. They're quite a good price actually...

 

None of the big name brands have anything in a 12" size. Bums.

Lost the nearside front tyre this afternoon, in the piss down rain too!

Pissing down yesterday @ Rheged discovery centre, Penrith - the overflow, gravel carpark is under 4" of muddy water - family man* bravely changing drivers rear on spindly jack!!
