The new news 24 thread

The Merc sold on ebay for more than I was asking for it from you mingebags and it has been collected and paid for, so, yay! money. The Renno has been collected and taken to Kings Lynm for next months ACA Classic auction.

Theoretically I am now down to 13 cars. One of the Aerodecks should be up for grabs in a few weeks, after I get the new one sorted and decide which one I want to keep. I'm hopefully going to be down to 12 cars by insurance renewal time and years end.... That said that Tempra estate on the tat thread looked well fit.

I'd taken the boring and the cash from merc sale for my rank taxi once I beat you at the weekend ;)

You is a comedian 320T

The boring is gonna whip your Taxi and it is unlikely ever to be sold.

Whee, Rover could be driven today.  Also got to try out my brass tyre pressure gauge which works a treat.  Since Mike replaced the inlet manifold gasket it's a lot smoother to drive around town and even quieter, which I didn't think it could be.

Heh- it'll all come down to the weather and luck on the day..

I managed a stall and 2nd fastest time of the day last time out.

It's back, colour match is perfect! I keep saying these two do fantastic work and they really do but the delays on this one have been tedious, not helped by the fact that Mike is the most UNRELIABLE TWAT on the planet! His 11:00 is my 1:30 and that really winds me up! I am NEVER late. I hate being late in a pathological way and am always at least ten minutes early. I am used to people being ten, fifteen minutes late but this guy takes it to a whole new level!

Compounded by his total inability to answer his phone...

Anyway, the car looks fantastic and as soon as the stripe appears for the front wing it will be all good.

Tomorrow it's off to Exeter for service, lets see how long they can take and how many pictures of the Queen they can remove from my wallet... okay, card. I'm like royalty me - no cash!

Progress is motoring for the new house I am buying.

I knocked the back wall down tonight to open the back up to make a driveway. The current occupants stopped me when I attempted to remove the brick outhouse mind, so guess I will have to wait a little while longer until contracts exchanged (it's currently a rental property but they're being evicted due to the sale).

Measured up and chose gates to replace the wall. Obviously car storage takes priority.

Sounds like a coolant flow problem. Start with the basics. Are you happy with the thermostat, & is the fan belt tight enough?

Oh, and if you use glycol, never top up with plain water. Ever.

The thermostat didn't look like it's in the first flush of youth when I had the inlet manifold off so I'll swap that first.

It made it back without any ftp's although it was running hot enough to cook a Christmas turkey right through for a family of 17.

The speed didn't seem to make much difference (going slower made it cool down a bit) so I just floored it for the last 5 miles with the thought that if it popped I'd have enough momentum to get over to the side of the road. It seemed a bit down on power but I guess that could be down it sucking in air that that's probably about 80c.

Aye, I think I'll take the Puke tomorrow.

Well had some good news today. My anglia has just had a 4 wheel alignment and after adjustment it sailed through. Given how much bodywork has been replaced I was well chuffed and celebrated with a cheeky drive down my mates long drive (he lives on a farm)

First time it's been driven since the late eighties that I know of.

next job is to sort a small cooling issue then book in for the mot!

Mmm nice, I saw an orange Manta A this morning parked up in Chesterfield, they are beautiful cars.

No, not sure, but I think my bank account can help prevent that!

There's one in the garage I share at work.

Ahh, penny in the air...   Do you have a timing light?

I found the biggest factor in overheating, BY FAR, was the ignition timing being out.   All those little explosions should be generating motive force rather than waste heat.

Set the timing to 6ºBTDC and dwell to 28º at idle and the cooling system won't have so much heat to deal with.

But if you're not losing coolant, the full checklist is:

  • Stuck Thermostat
  • Loose Fan Belt (water pump not working hard enough)
  • Radiator blockage
  • Heater blockage (often a flush, in both directions, is enough)
  • Hose blockage
  • Inlet manifold water pipe blockage (the small pipe gets mucky quickly)
  • Failed Water Pump (will manifest itself as hot engine but cold radiator)
  • Ignition Timing (just too much heat for cooling system to deal with)
  • Failed Head Gasket
  • Slipping Fan Clutch
  • Worn out radiator (i.e. missing fins)
  • Other Engine issues  - dwell setting, health of points & condenser, spark plug gap, mixture settings, carburettor balance between banks.
  • Failed temperature sender (gauge telling lies)

I post this because I can now testify that it IS possible to conquer the Rover V8 overheating problems.  To the extent that I am now happy to drive mine on 104ºC days, in traffic, with the clunky inefficient 1970s air conditioner on, and remain confident, not just hopeful, that everything stays at normal temperature.  Mind you, I did spend time and money fixing every single one of the above items on the checklist!

One bodge that can help is a high-flow thermostat.  Don't know if you can get these in the UK, but out here, they're available.  When they open, they OPEN, and the water pump can really get that coolant moving.

I just watched the opening scene from Back to the Future 2, where they're arriving in Hill Valley, CA on Oct 21st 2015 at 4.29pm.  I watched it at exactly 4.29pm Pacific time on Oct 21st 2015.  Yes, I am that sad.

Is it for sale?

One of them should be for sale in a few weeks, hopefully before the end of Nov. I currently have 2x 1987 Aerodeck EXi autos, and am undecided which is staying.

In these times sensitive to economy and emissions I have done my bit and bought a Panzerwagen this afternoon, appropriately enough from a pig farm. It's local but still be a day or two before it arrives to lower the tone and I realise what I have done.

Re: Zafira, about time. A relative had that happen to him. About nine years ago...

In other news, the XM is causing disappointment. It's got very clonky at the front end and this worries me. Twice, I've pulled away and it's gone clonk-clonk in a wheel-hitting-something type way - which has then gone away once I sped up. It's especially bad going down hill. Also, the remote central locking has packed up again, but I'm pretty sure this is just a weak fob battery. The Dyane is also still clonking badly on turns, due to knackered CV joints. I need some fettling time, but it has been in short supply of late. Can't afford new CV joints for the Dyane (it seems to have to buy a complete lower driveshaft) so I'm eyeing up the poor 2CV again. And I still need to lap the Dyane's cylinder heads in. Ugh.

I did thinking timing with the P6 given the weird way it was heating up. I drove 35 miles at speed and it never went into the red but I suspect if I'd done another 10 or 20 it might have done.

I'll check the timing, and put a new stat in it then see what happens. There's not long left on the MOT so I might just tuck it up for winter.
