Looks like a late phase 1? Most Y plates are phase 2 so well bought.

How many miles has it done?

Nice standard looking Tec S 8)

Thanks dude, yes it's a Ph1 - June 2000 build but not registered until May '01.

Totally original even down to the keyfob and number plate on the front - service history until last year and even found the original mats under the boot carpet! Result! Has done 117k.

Checked the 850 over in half arsed preparation for the MOT. It needs new track rods and it took most of the afternoon to work out which steering rack it has so I could order some. I ordered gaiters, track rod ends too and a CV boot too, lots of shiny bits for the tester to look at.

Krujoe suggested the noise I've been getting under acceleration might be the top engine mount and, sure enough, it was buggered. Crap "before" picture.

The dead V70's mount looked ok so I've just used that. The V70 has a beefier bush at the bulkhead end so I had that too, it's the first time that car has yielded any useful spares.

Fleet news-

A weekend of great weather over Dartmoor. Took out the transit loaded up with bikes;

And later a tip run where it was eyed up suspiciously by staff. Vans are allowed up to 3.5t GVW- I think they just didnt like the look of it!

The Granada hasn't moved but does have a choke cable routed and fitted to the dash.

Speaking of Fords, I crossed one in the Range Rover

There's me thinking even I can't cock up an oil and filter change. RONG! Did it on the Cav yesterday together with new spark plugs, and after a 50 mile run to go and see some 1970s leaping cat tat in Essex (more on that later, if I can build up the courage to buy it...) I hear a clunck and the oil light comes on. I stopped in front of a Vauxhall dealer/repairs gaff which was rather apt, had a look under and the filter was resting on the front subframe, oil spunked everywhere. I tried to put it back on, but it just wouldn't take like it had been threaded or something. Great.

After a 2 hour wait I got recovered home, and now I think back it is the wrong filter as I bought it for the Metro ages ago, but saw one on the shelf in my garage and somehow thought it was for the Cav. What a twat. The recovery guy was a Vauxhall perv and a serial Vectra owner, so I had a decent chat with him on the way home. He put the old one back on for the time being, glad I didn't chuck it!

On the plus side, before the filter fail I nipped in to Brands Hatch as the HSCC championships were on. As it was 4pm the old boy on the gate let me in for free, so I got to see 2 hours of historic racing for nowt.

Had a ftp with civic tonight. Pullig away from lights with massive clunk and lost all drive.

Instantly suspected gearbox. Managed to push it into sainsbury car park. AA called and took them 90 mins to send a small van to confirm they need a flat bed or similar. Diagnosed inner cv joint is fucked.

2 and a bit hours before very nice man turned up in van and a framed me home.

How difficult is it as a job to do?

Posted

IIRC it's not too bad. Civics are generally pretty easy to work on aside cambelt access on 1.4s and rear suspension bushes.

Cool. Ordered full driveshaft and found couple of YouTube vids that make it look easy.

Yes but she has an opinion as to what we should have!

I always say my wife has excellent taste as she chose me.

Did it achieve that figure by running backwards, like Christine's?

Moog , are you sure it's the inner joint ? They used to break the driveshafts under the rubber damper bit . They rust under them until they reduce in size enough to break

Your lucky, I lent my C15D to a friend for a tip run and he was turned back because he did not have a pre ordered chit to say he was just a house holder. We moved his rubbish to my Mercedes estate added some of mine rubbish and there was no problem!

Here in Buckingham we are so posh even the rubbish has to go to the tip in a Mercedes!

You have worried me now, I don't always agree with Mrs Cyl choices in cars!

I had to help a friends dad out with the XM when his vivaro was turned away from the tip once. Commercial waste didnt have an eyelid batted to it when it came out of a car, out of a van with an expired permit though, he may as well have raped the tip persons wife...

Lovely.  Is that the Tarr Steps?  Haven't been there in yonks.  Need to drag the wife and dog back to my old Devon haunts some time now the (other) tourists have mostly gone.

Four hours to get through the eurotunnel last night. No help apologies or accurate information from the staff. The matrix signs kept saying 30 min delay due to a technical issue, after not moving an inch through the check-in terminals for three hours this was getting silly. I was booked on the 21.20, turned up early enough to be on the 20.20 normally and was on the 00.20. On the plus side the merc doesn't half shift when you put your foot down- even fully loaded it was the fastest thing on the m20. Got in 1.30 this morning.

Only interesting car was a lotus lean ( square one) alongside.

That's worrying given my in-laws are due to use the Chunnel this weekend. They're already fretting because a friend of their's had a massive delay of similar length the other week. Happily, we're using Dieppe-Newhaven.

Nope.

I have ordered a new full driveshaft and will swap the lot. It is drivers side if that makes a difference.

If it has gone one side is it likely to go the other? Missus Moog was stressing as to whether to change both.

I know Land Rovers 'mark their territory', but the puddle of oil under my Discovery had got to the state where I was fearful of a US invasion.

The problem was traced to the vacuum pump - the rivets that hold it together had apparently worked loose and it was pissing out oil. Fucksticks!

New OEM pumps are about £110, and even crappy Britpart ones are £60, so I drilled out the rivets, cleaned up the rubber seal & mating surfaces, applied a bead of silicone sealant & replaced the rivets with M5 bolts.

Finished product:

Re-fitted it & tested it - brake servo works fine, no leaks :-)

Are they different lengths?

If so, they will have differing strength properties so the other should be fine.

Or have you had mismatched tyres on?

Posted

I dont know about length. All matching tyres.

Twosmoke is spot on the shaft has snapped under the doughnut.

I just change this one and see how it goes.

I got out of the habit of using the handbrake when I had a CX Familiale and then another. Every time they went in for a dealer service they told me they needed new handbrake pads. I was able to say NO THEY DONT, I NEVER USE THE HANDBRAKE so that all the other customers in the service department reception could hear me.

This just reminded me of something - when I took my CX22 TRS to a recommended garage for an MOT - one that still used a pit instead of a lift, and yes, of course there were tales of the apprentice bringing in a Reliant Robin... anyway, they did all the tests, then it was time for the handbrake test.

On the rollers, back wheels.

*say nothing*

Brake lights come on, car passes.

Chap was in the habit of 'helping' handbrakes, I think.

The Astra is doing sterling duty as a tip car/workhorse. With the back filled with hedge and rubble and scrap wood on the roof rack I can't think of another car that would do the job better for the same cheap price. Even gets 43mpg with short stop start journeys. My reasoning/man maths is that the car has cost me a couple of skips full of waste and will take far more than that throughout the next 12 months. Also helps to have a back up car in case my Alfa decides to become all Italian on me.

I have just deleted some emails from my inbox.

6661 to be exact going back to 2010.

No wonder it was a bit slow.
