I spent most of the day polishing up the Sierra for the first time in at least 9 years, probably closer to 17, it's looking minty fresh now. I'll get some proper photos tomorrow in the daylight so you'll have to make do with these phone ones for now.

Such a great interior - driver-focused but airy, nice controls, ergonomics good. Latest model I had was an XR4x4 on H, the steering wheel doesn't look familiar though. Wonder if they changed it or if XR was different.

I think the XR's had a more sporty wheel from memory, i have to say it's very comfy to drive, the seats feel more supportive than the old 190E I had.

I also repaired the wheel arches and filled the patch on the sill, the paint match on the pre mixed Halfords cans aren't the greatest though!

That paint match is infuriatingly off, is it that the Halfords paint is just hopelessly matched or the rest of the car has somehow faded (I mean, I guess things other than red fade, right?). Looks like a good finish otherwise, I think that makes it more irritating.

The downside to doing this video is that I then watched my Discovery one. I want another one now. SO BLUE!

It's in for MOT later today,  wish it luck.

It looks much better after a polish but it's still not perfect, I think Mercury grey can be a sod to match at the best of times though.

Posted

Mercury grey is an arse to match but I don't think modern paints are helping.  Did a red paint match on a Honda Civic and on the plastic parts the match was excellent.  The metal parts were a different story, it was like I'd used a completely different paint.  Interestingly, the same red applied to an exhaust which then got hot and baked proved a better match for the paint on the metal of the Honda.  I wonder if to get a better match with modern water based paints you need the baking process to replace whatever magic happened with solvent based paint curing.

Trudging back in the rain following a range rover fail to proceed. Not quite enough guts in the battery to get it to catch. Further investigations await. It's not as if I've had it sat about doing bugger all lately either....

The range rover actually functioning yesterday

there's your problem right there some pillock left the lights on!

I realise I may be telling my granny how to suck mints but You might have been better off doing the full quarter up to the swage line it's easier to loose the color difference. Trying to feather out using Cans is hard!

Saying that I've never had one good paint match from halfords. The stuff I've got off eBay has been much better and the nozzles had a better spray .

Posted

To be fair I did do it up to the swage line and flicked it around the filler cap, it's actually come out pretty well now it's been mopped although the repair on the bonnet looks a little worse.

I'll take some photos with my decent camera during the day and post them up so you can see.

Discovered last night that The Volvo's MOT expires tomorrow. I thought it still had a month to go.

No idea when it will get a new one, as at present, time and enthusiasm to prepare and submit the car for inspection is at a premium. I'm aiming for mid-November at the latest.

Anyone seen page 11 of the Metro today? A short story on the dwindling numbers of shite including the Princess, Ambassador, Marina, Citroen BX and MG Maestro.

I think it was a bit hit and miss whatever was to hand on steering wheels, i have seen "untouched" mk2 pre facelift xr4x4's with 2 spoke, 3 spoke and 4 spoke rubber type steering wheels, my saph gls which should have had the 3 spoke came with the same 4 spoke wheel as you have in yours trig, luckily I had the correct type in my parts stash so it went on

I much prefer the pre facelift upper dash boards and door cards like in yours trig, mine has the hooded facelift type dash and the door cards with the full handle/

armrest which always bloody break

Today I spent £385 on a Rover.

No,not buying a 1 owner 50,000 mile Primrose 75.

Nor a flame Red 416 Gti Twin Cam with grey leather.

No I've thrown a ridiculous amount of cash at MOTing the ex-AngryFatha 600 . Yes, the same car that I paid just £100 for back in June last year when scrap was £80 a tonne !

The handbrake had seized , necessitating both calipers coming off and fiddled with, new pads front and back, cv boots, upper bushes or balljoints or something. New centre section of exhaust, welding to cat and new bracket, a second hand seat belt buckle.

I can't believe I spent this much on an old heap, but daughter loves it and it still drives perfectly, has never failed to start. Next year though any more than £100 and it's definitely bridge bound.

Now , just need to find a Nightfire boot lid ,where a lamppost ran into it,apparently.

New headlining arrived today for the XJ-S.  DIY fittage to occur shortly.

XJ-Ss are so last week, though.  Everyone who's anyone is in a CX this week ;-)

'Tis worth it if chod works consistently and is loved.  I've decided to chuck up to £500 at the Cavalier for the MoT this month, but the cost will be split with SWMBO as technically it's her car.  Not that it should need that much hopefully.

I wouldn't worry. Next week will be Renault 25s.

Bugger now I'm watching it. Looks a complete and utter bargain at the moment and quite nice spec. But I'm a manual devil fuel junkie in 160 form

Agreed. Goodness knows how much I am soon going to spend on my £400 R75 when it goes in for belts and what not.

I would expect somewhere in the region of £700 along with a few other small jobs that need doing, add to that the £500 spent on the recent MOT and servicing.

Yeah I know, I could of spent all that on a deposit for a new white 1 series. Bollocks to that !!!

Right anyone want to buy an MG ZT. The stuff it failed an mot on isn't too bad just a rear exhaust box really. It is what they didn't find that is the problem. It needs rear pads and discs and rear handbrake shoes. It also needs a fitting kit and at least the n/s rear brake back plate. The n/s/r spring is broken right at the end which a lot of testers wouldn't notice but I know its there so it needs doing. The air bag and abs lights were on when I picked it up but I have turned the abs light off now which is staying off and the air bag is probably due to soaked carpets on the passenger side. It isn't all bad though it drove home 50 miles without too much fuss and looks quite presentable. I put £20 of petrol in it so if anyone wants to give me £220 for it and take it away. Still showing as taxed at the moment but the mot is out. If there are no takers and I get bored I may fix it. Rear pads and discs are £38 on ebay and the brake back plate is £46. The seller said the belts had been done last year but there is no paperwork to prove it.

Great project there Panhard, plus these ZT cars are rather sought after in the 75/ZT world, they certainly command more dollar than the 75 so it could be worth some time and money.

Check the plenum drains before you do anything else.

Cars cost money to run and if you enjoy it / it's reliable than it's worth it . I've just spent 200 quid on a paint correction / detail on the Saab which seems mental to me but I love the car again now !
