Weekend before last, I stopped at Oxford services and parked in the air/water bay, was a tidy looking B reg Volvo 740 saloon with a POLICE AWARE sticker on the passenger window. The drivers window was either broken or open, couldn't tell as I only saw it as I was heading back out of the services and couldn't really turn around.

It looks like a Panhard is coming my way just need to sort transport. It is a rare L9 estate that was in this months classic and sportscar discovered section. It has some serious rot in the roof but nothing that time and cash can't fix

Is that Chris McPheat's one? Only break I know of in this country, and it's pretty rotten. Or are you importing?

That must be why I;ve seen so many. There's been a polish leon in a layby near our local asda for months, and apparently a volvo estate nearby too. The leon is right next to a pikey camp, so for that to still be there things must be bad. For the volvo to not have been taken up to scotland yet things must be worse than we thought!

Wonder if this means I can finally buy an OK £50 car like all you older guys say used to happen...

Old guys? I'm 28 ya cheeky wee shite. Why I oughta........

Paid 80 quid for a mot bx tzd on a k plate,e plate,f plate and k plate micras all less than 50 notes,30 quid for a c plate fiesta and a j plate metro gta free for collection in admag around 2003/04/05

And as an added bonus, it appears to be holding its coolant this time :-D

Next job: weld up the small crack in the front diff casing, and possibly the hole in the exhaust (if there's enough good metal to weld to... otherwise replace centre & rear sections).

Nights are drawing in...

It's also getting colder. Car is getting increasingly prone to grumpiness in the mornings and refusing to start. I need to tinker with the carb, I also washed it to try in the hope it felt the TLC and would be more inclined to behave. It didn't.

I'm not sure if it looks better when clean. From 100 yards it looks fab but any closer and you can see the rusty as shit wheels and the brush painted touch-ups in various shades of green, most of which aren't Brooklands. All the dirt and brake dust covers that up...

I love your little green Triumph washed and unwashed, it's such a bonny little thing even with all its warts and lumps and bumps and bad makeup.

Collected the Daimler tonight. It didn't start off well as I ran out of pez 5 miles into the trip, the seller said it was low and he weren't joking. Gauge telling lies doesn't help, so he came out and towed me to safety as was conked on a fast bend then got a can load down the road.

Pez shot later on at Thurrock services

Lots of things don't work or are intermittent such as the heater, but hoofed it on the M25 and the old XK lump sounds glorious, albeit a bit tappety at lower speeds. Brakes faded closer to home to the point where the dash warning came on and wheel went a bit wobbly, so not sure if they are binding or fucked or something. After a rest they were a bit better.

Fits in the garage too so that's a relief! Will give the footwells a chance to dry out before I get the front screen sorted.

Overall though for a cheap old Daimler it's rather lovely.

Just been lying in the street replacing the fan belt on a mk 4 Cortina I decided it would be a good idea to give a run to work!  :?

Why are you stirring up old emotions like this!

Great car anyway.

Daimler looks great Rob! Just needs some period peaked reflective plates to finish it off :)

My neighbour's 57 ref merc clk (came home towed by the aa last night. Something about a cog or gears that are out of sync? Sounds like a bucket of spanners on a spin cycle trying to start. Any theories?

Specialist (who she pinched from me) is coming over later to look and suck teeth at. She's put the reg into we-buy-any old heap and it says £3500 (whilst running obv. ) and is considering a new ML Bluetooth thing. She says it's old now! and high mileage 145k, and isn't sure it's worth fixing.

Yeap that is the one just getting quotes for delivery at the moment. No idea what to do with it if I get it, probably import another to build one good one.

Looks nice - I hope it does'nt bankrupt you.

Great stuff Rob. After that long off the road, I'd be amazed if the brakes don't need some fettling. Has to be done though! Brilliant.

Felt a bit more human today so dragged myself from my sick bed to fix the civic.

Up in the air

Using a YouTube video I undid the bottom wishbone rather than the ball joint.

Old driveshaft out post-3994-144369308336_thumb.jpg

As suggested by twosmoke the DS had snapped under the rubber doughnut.

Old and new post-3994-144369311734_thumb.jpg

All back together now and we have power. Took about an hour including coughing up slime and fetching tools. Not 100% sure about the new impact wrench. It worked but doesn't seem that powerful.

I received a wonderful pressie in the post this morning, an AA badge to go on the front of old Smokey. Free and gratis from a very kind member on here. I will let him 'out' himself if he chooses but most people choose to deny having anything to do with me! :)

welding the mondeo up...

Whats that welding mask all about? is it auto-darkening?

I am in two minds.....

1 - Awesome - its nice and small so doesnt get in the way when you have your head wedged into a corner of the engine bay trying to weld upside down.

2 - Bloody hell, doesnt that leave you with a mega case of reverse panda-eyes with welder suntan all over your face except where the mask is?

Cheers, just bought the same one from a different seller (that one wont post to France). £11 including delivery from China - what could possibly go wrong?

So what would happen if I accidentally went up there and took it (assuming the keys are about or it could be started and the steering lock taken off), bought it home, fixed it up, got the v5 in my name and rolled in it?

I presume I would get bum raped by plod?

Theft - it isn't yours therefore you nicked it. Bum rape might* happen if you get sent down.

They get pretty pissed of if you pinch the "plod aware" sticker too.
