I've got the pleasure of driving from deepest cornwall to Liverpool and back tomorrow , in a frontera , with a dirty great big Brian james trailer on , with a fiesta on the way up , Audi on the way back , on the busiest weekend of the year on the a30 !

Enough grammar issues there?

Hopefully the M6 will be running rather better then. Nasty smash north of Brum has had it closed most of today.

Along with the entirety of the M42 feeding into the M6, meaning my 33 mile journey home took 2 hours. Some of that was the decision to take two weeks to resurface a quarter mile of M42 in the daytime only though, which less forgivable than a smash which I hope wasn't too serious for those involved....

I sorted out the insurance for the Hyosung a couple of days ago (76 quid for the year, bargain), and I took it for my first proper run this evening after work.  I actually really like it.  It's slow off the line (I reckon the Chinese bike would beat it to 30) and it needs caning to make any kind of progress, but it's comfortable, the sheer size of the thing means it's unusually spacious for a 125, and once up to speed it will keep up with single carriageway A-road traffic well enough - I've not wound it right up but it'll sit at an indicated 65 with little apparent stress, although it's doing over 9,000 revs at that speed.  The weight works in its favour on bumpy stretches of road as it just pummels the bumps into submissin, and it feels very stable.  It also sounds gorgeous, especially when the engine comes on cam at about 7,000 revs.  It even has an adequate headlight.  I reckon it'd be a perfectly acceptable bike to do a long run on, provided one was not in too much of a hurry.

I need to have a fixing session on the Spacy this weekend.  I've robbed the spares bike of its exhaust, which I'm going to use to replace the snapped one on the main bike.  Strangely, the spare exhaust is a completely different design - although looking at photos on the web it does appear to be the standard Spacy exhaust, which means the snapped one may have been an aftermarket job.  I've also bought a sidestand from India (designed for a Bajaj Chetak) which I'm going to have to try and wangle on somehow - I can see the grinder and the welder getting involved as I can't see anywhere to bolt it on.

Main job for the A35 this weekend is to try and get the offside front wing off.  I've got some of the bolts undone (or snapped off), but the ones at the back are going to be fugging awkward to get to, and the ones at the front I'm going to have to remove the headlight bowl to reach.  All good fun.  At least it now has a decent pair of nearside doors, after I tidied up and fitted the ones Angrydicky gave me.  They took a bit of lining up, but they now open and latch OK, as does the replacement bootlid after I freed off the catch mechanism (which I'd thought was locked, but was in fact just seized to fuck).  It's going to need some tidying in other places as well (notably the bottoms of the rear wings, once I've got rid of the plates that someone has pop-rivetted on  ); once I've got the external panels looking passable I'll probably give it a quick coat of paint and refit the lights, just so it looks respectable enough that I can take it home and stick it on the driveway without the neighbours complaining.  Then I can get on with the welding, brakes, interior etc - although whether I'll have time to do any of this before we run out of summer remains to be seen.  I've still got to sort the Renault 6 too.

Nothing remotely in anyones interest but my own, was doing some weeding today and a wasp got entangled in a spiders web. This rather large fecker of a spider ran down the web and had a bit of a kerfuffle with said stuck wasp ,much wrestling and flaying about ensued, then another wasp intervened and started on spider??.

Dayum, spider fecked backed off as you would and wasp freed itself after some wriggling. And you think insects have no feelings ???

I have eventually received the V5 for the Storia X4 I re-imported from Jersey earlier this year, so now I just need to buy some plates for it and then it will be for sale :(

If anyone is interested the price is £3k, if the previous UK owner doesn't want it back.

Balls. The Dyane needs a replacement ignition barrel. No problem, as I have one. I even found it today in the 2CV. What I didn't find is the key that should have been in the barrel. Where on earth did I put that? Ugh. I reckon I took it out to stop someone just being able to swap the wires over to that barrel - kept in the 2CV in case its ignition barrel failed. Which it once did. I hate it when I put things in safe places.

Well done Rob, that looks ace.  I do like Platinum Silver, it's unusual to see it on an R8 though, it seemed to be mostly 100s that were painted that colour, including my mum's brand spanking new 111i back in 1995.

In other Rover wedge news, the 220SLi bike is, for the first time in many years, no longer with someone on this forum.  It was collected yesterday and has gone off to pastures new.  In its place is a simple little modern 2008 Hyundai i10 1.1 which is nice and cheap to run and tax.

Alright, don't worry, I haven't done anything daft.   :-D

My sister has borrowed the 220SLi for a couple of months after limping her i10 down to my house from South Wales en route to Plymouth on the last remnants of its clutch friction plate.  It started slipping a few days ago and it became increasingly obvious it was never going to make it the rest of the weekend as she has a lot of miles to do in the next few days.  I'll get the clutch fixed and do a full service and cambelt change on the i10 at my leisure and then she can swap them back next month some time when she's back down this way.

In the mean time, I hope to convert her to the ways of the R8.  She has, despite a liking for old cars, always said she 'doesn't like Rovers' but a text from her when she arrived in Plymouth which said 'two thumbs up for the Rover' suggests there might be hope yet.

If you want to borrow a ramp or anything to help do the clutch give me a shout. I have had a major clearout and can actually use my second ramp now.

I have just helped fit a smiths Art Deco clock ( probably ex Bentley or similar )to my friend's Morgan. I think the reason they were said to be louder than the engine is that it has a very loud tick. Didn't need to wait for the hands to move to check it was working ok. You could hear it ticking away.

The A4 is on three wheels and a bottle jack. One rear spring done, shock taken off the other side. I think it gets finished tomorrow.

That's very kind, thank you. I would but it probably wouldn't make it! It was apparently down to 40mph on the link road hills when she drove it up here. I did actually give her your garage's number in case it wouldn't get past Wellington but it was Ok. I'll do it on the driveway or use the local rent-a-ramp just up the road.

I'll replace both I think as it was not a pleasant experience

Also check the pipes to that go across the rear beam to the cylinders, one of mine split earlier this year, but my car is a bit older and higher mileage than yours.

I shall indeed- thanks for the tip!

One of the things the Frontera failed it's test on last week was an insecure number plate

I serviced the lawnmower. New springs, gaskets and cleaned all the oil out the carb.

I have purchased another Escort in a shell suit, this time a 2002 1.4 one with a water leak.

Hopefully it'll follow suit like the diesel estate one I had recently and find a buyer very quickly.

I'm cancelling tomorrow's RAF Cosford plans. Given I've got to collect the Dyane this week (paperwork permitting) and get it (hopefully) and myself (in the XM as back up) to Anglesey for five days at the 24hr race, I shall have to admit that I can't fund everything I want to do right now. Oh well. Lie in then! Yay!

I taxed the Spacy by monthly direct debit.  I think it's £1.33 a month or something daft.

Went down to the garage today and fired up the Renner Six, for the first time in several months.  I ended up tipping a bit of pez down the carb to help it along as the battery was getting tired, but it fired up well enough and ran as happily as ever.  Unfortunately the fuel tank is now leaking quite badly - my previous repair using Petro Patch putty appears to have dried out and come unstuck, and when I tipped some fresh fuel into the tank it started dripping out the bottom.  So that's another repair I'm going to have to do when I bring it home.

The Spacy now has the replacement exhaust fitted (which was awkward as it's way bulkier than the old exhaust and made one of the cylinder head studs almost impossible to get at) and the decibels have reduced back down to acceptable levels, which is good.  I've also worked out where I'm going to fit the sidestand - there's a circular hole in one of the frame "outriggers" which is almost exactly the same size as the stand mounting plate, and with a bit of gentle hammering it fitted into place easily enough.  Tomorrow I'm going to tweak it to get the angle right and then fix it in position with a few tack welds - which should be enough as the interference fit between the mounting plate and the frame will be taking most of the weight of the bike.  I can then start using the thing again, finally.

The Hyosung now has a number plate light, but that's about as far as it got today.  I did discover that the rear brake caliper isn't actually sticking that badly - the brake does bind on, but a couple of good kicks to the caliper are enough to get it to let go.  Which is a bonus as it means I can step on the back brake if I need to stop quickly without fear of then being stuck at the side of the road with a locked-on brake.  Fork seals are looking a little tired, but after tackling the ones on the Cagiva this is no longer a job which fills me with dread.

Whilst I was in Norwich I popped into the motor factors and bought one of those "drift knobs" that bolt onto your steering wheel and allow you to steer with one hand.  The Renner van is getting worse at jumping out of 1st and 2nd, and holding it in gear whilst trying to pull out of a tight junction wasn't a lot of fun.  The knob has done the trick - it's now a lot easier to drive.

I had a crawl underneath the Peugeot van to remind myself of the extent of welding required.  Which was a bad move - not only was it worse than I remembered, but I found a whole lot more that needs doing.  Basically the whole of the inner sill under the nearside sliding door needs renewing (a good four feet of it), along with one or possibly two of the outriggers, and another outrigger at the front which supports the front jacking point.  The offside of the van isn't so bad, but again the front outrigger is looking rather tender.  What with that, a possible PAS leak from somewhere and whatever else the MOT man finds, I'm seriously having second thoughts about whether it's worth doing, even though it's been a bloody good little van.  I'm beginning to think I should have kept the VW - it may have been slow, noisy and unable to go into London, but at least it was solid...

I'm carbooting today with a friend that does it for living.

So far my total spend is £10 for 2.5 tonne car jack, huge set of imperial sockets and newish B&D sander.

Is that our very own Captain 70s featuring in Practical Classic mag this month? A yellow Dolly and green Dolly combined with a viaduct in the background that kids may have thrown stones from?
