It is 5ton and chromes bumper

Needs welding at spring hangers and seat belt mounts.

Most sub-£1000 chrome B's will need front inner wings, A post bottoms, all three layers of the sills and rear arches. Panels are cheap, but keeping the body aligned while replacing them is not for the faint-hearted...

For £500, I still would.

Continuing on the Golf mrk.4 theme, what are the ones with VR5 engines like? I confess to liking the idea of such a big petrol engine in a small hatchback, although I would be unlikely to buy a VAG product mainly due to having to tolerate the sheer boredom. I guess they must have discontinued these engines when the turbo diesel era started, and I don’t think they offered them on the mrk. 3.

The VR5 engine sounds great, I would go for a Toledo V5 though because they're a much prettier car.

Those golfs are a bit soft but at that money it's worth a shot . I had a 1.8t Passat of a similar vintage for 3 years and it was excellent until the wheel fell off .

I like my booted mk4 Goof.

It's almost due it's second cambelt in my ownership and I plan to run  it until it completely dies.

There's very little I'd consider changing it for for a work hack, relatively comfortable, reliable and you'd be hard pushed to find something cheaper to run.

Volkswagens of that era are pure meh.

I mean sure they do everything reasonably well, in the same way that magnolia paint covers walls, but nobody gets excited by magnolia paint.

New wcpgw car purchased . Midlife crisis yolo etc.

Cort16 - it wouldn't be a v8 waftobarge would it? or something more suited to winter like a rwd convertible?

Posted

Correct on the rwd v8 part wrong on the convertible part . I think I may have under estimated it's girth .

On the subject of VAG did a quick oil service today on the A6 tdi. Got a 2000mile road trip to see family in Germany this coming week. I got hold of a leather interior out of one being broken for spares to refresh the 250k wear and general abuse the outgoing manky cloth one had. Other than that it's been a faultless daily which has almost erased the memory of a turkey of a b5 passat I owned a few years back, which at the time made me vow never again!

This has already become a long termer for me ( owned over 3 months) more through convenience and having a small family now means I have less spare time than I used to. Less exposure to cars for sale and the pull of something with more cylinders/personality/insert an excuse to buy another car. I think i could be growing to like it, though that may change come the January MOT!

Nice.  One day I too hope to stick two fingers up to the power companies by doing just this.

FATHA_DUGONG has done this. At the moment it doesn't work very well and he missed the first round of rebates available - because MOTHA_DUGONG said it was strange and odd and basically to FO.

We looked at having them from one of those that does them 'free'. Nothing is free......

It works but you need to buy them outright - that's when YOU can gain rather than the company that does them free.

Oh...........I hate the look of the things too!

Maybe the next generation version will involve simply retiling your roof with special tiles??

Sorry to hear about your mate, CMS. Terrible news.

Washer pump on the car, slowing to a gradual halt: you have to email it the day before to book a screen cleaning. Why now? Why when it's cold and wet outside?

Might ask my other half's folks for a loan of their garage for an hour, rather than grub about under it in the street!

I appear to have agreed to sell the Merc, my mate is a big 190E fan and been pestering me about mine since I bought it, he's been over and offered £900 which I think is fair so I've accepted.

He also offered me his Honda Accord as a trade in if I fancied it but I'm not sure. It's a 2001 Accord 1.8 Sport with 121k, full history, tidy enough but has a heavy clutch and needs a abs sensor which is £100, he's said I can have it plus £500 which basically means I'd be paying £400 for it. I'm not sure if it's worth it though, especially as I don't really fancy it.

Nah, those Accords are pretty miserable from what I've heard. Nondescript at best - there's nothing inherently wrong with them, but they're just a nothing car, like when Carinas were everywhere. Y plate for pricey emissions based tax too.

Posted

good for a spin but 300 quid to tax and juicy

buy that 500 quid 535 at least youd be going quick and have noise for the 20mpg :D

Oh go on tell me you have bought either a mulsanne or a silver spirit. I can't be the only one ! They are pretty big but I can still get it in the double garage at home.
