Sorry to hear about your pal CMS, that's no age at all.

I liked the look of Vulgalour's threadbare nodding tiger he had in his Princess so decided to make this cracking purchase when I saw him at the boot sale today. He's not purple, but he sits quite happily on the little rubber mat on the Maestro's dashboard. Meet Noddy.

Lobbed yet another coat of wax on the Brick today. It looks OK-ish, but I can't get it close to how the Rover looks.

Noddy looks in far better nick than my tiger was, but if you find the flocking starts to dry out and crack up it'll soon start peeling off in big sheets.

Despite my rant in the grump thread I managed to collect the Corsa B today. Is it wrong to say I really like it? The ride and general comfort levels are much better than my Dad's Corsa C, and after 130 miles I feel fine. I get more aches driving the 75. The 1.2 engine is silent as a fish, quieter I'd imagine than the equivalent Fiesta, and sits happily at 70 on the motorway. I only bought it to see how shit they are, but am pleasantly surprised.

I also managed to fit in a trip to Stondon and got to the see the Metro Scout which I've wanted to have a look at for yonks. Christ the place is chock full of awesomness! I was the only visitor so tried to get a sneaky sit in their AM Lagonda as it's King of the Wedges, but the curator/caretaker bloke turned up and started talking to me about it.

Had a fiddle with the Setright ticket machine I bought at the Bristol Restoration Show. It's fiendishly complicated and I'm thinking of selling it on.

I also took the MX-3 down some 'interesting' local roads.

The paint is appalling and needs a full Vulgalour, as does the interior, which is wretched even by my standards (ISO grain notwithstanding).

Interior is quite dull but the Novotel racing seats and V6 engine more than make up for it.

Roadholding is surprisingly strong and the turn-in rather quick. I'll end up taking it to Rockingham sooner or later.

The Wentworth passed the 140,000 mile mark on the way to work last night, which means that I have done 6,000 miles in it since I bought it in April, with only one minor breakdown in all that time. Good car :)

With the electric van whisked away, I reverted to old tech today and dragged the 2CV out of the garage. Depressingly, she was rather reluctant to start. Slow cranking and an apparent lack of fuel. A few cranks with the starting handle improved matters (pulls the fuel through). As Mrs DW and I clambered aboard, we had to laugh. It feels like a little toy car after a week of a big Nissan Combi thing! Rubbing shoulders and struggling to have room to turn the wheel.

What fun though! Even though we were collecting our poor ex-cat. Here is the current fleet. 2CV back in the garage now - mainly because that means I don't have to de-ice it. Very frosty last night!

I'm having thoughts of selling the 190E already, It's a lovely car, don't get me wrong but I'm finding myself getting bored of the automatic gearbox, I like to drive a car, being in the right gear at the right time, with the Merc all the fun of driving it taken away plus it's a bit sluggish for my liking so it's using more fuel.

My dad has a V reg Golf 1.8T GTI that's sat in his drive which he's bought cheap of a friend, I half tempted to have that of him as it's sat there doing nothing.

I like automatics, but I know what you mean Trig, they can limit the fun a bit.  How much do you reckon you'll ask for it, just out of interest..?

Funnily enough had the same discussion with a mate yesterday-he has a lovely e39 530i auto and just cant get on with it.

I like a big auto barge, but only cos i have a selection of silly motahs for fun

I think with a big engine it would be fine but the 2.0 is just a little weedy for my liking, I was thinking £995 ono although i have a mate who's really interested whos coming over tomorrow to take a look so I'll see how that goes, I haven't really decided if i do want to sell it yet!

Sell the Merc by all means Trig, but a Mk4 Golf? *shakes head*

I know! But it's more of a tide me over thing, My dad got it for my sister of a chap he knows whos had it since new, but as it's done 177k and been of the road for a year and is quite grubby she doesn't really want it, It's just been moted, I'll was thinking it would be alright for over winter. It will only be something like £4-500 i suspect.

I like autos too but in a "I'm not getting a sore leg in traffic" way rather than a fun driving kind of way. They're better in car with big power but even then they're not loads of fun to drive. My XJR was blistering in a straight line but anyone driving hard in a 1.3 Fiesta could keep up with me in the twisties. That's why I always wanted an E39 M5. Lots of power but still with a 6 speed manual box.

Exactly that, I was racing back though the country lanes from work the other day as the A14 was blocked again and it was a challenge, I'd get into a corner and it would be in the wrong gear, once it got it's speed back up again it was time to slow again for another corner so it was constantly changing gear all the time.

I'm not a fast driver by any means but in my Focus i would have been in 4th most the journey, not shift gear every 5 seconds.

Just put it in '3' or '2' instead of 'D', job done. Much better than punishing yourself with a Mk.IV Golf...

Those MK4 1.8T Golfs are brilliant cars, I had a 1999 3 door hatch some time ago, great fun especially when floored in 3rd  8)

Autos are fine for the 95% of the time when you're popping to the shops or stuck in heavy, slow moving traffic but on that 5% when you want to have fun they're terrible.

If a car is free, what does the mileage and cleanliness and badge matter?  Seriously, some people wouldn't know a gift horse if it bit them on the arse.  If I were in need of a car and I was offered a Golf for £0 I'd definitely take it, clean it up and punt it on when I could afford to replace it.

Maybe, but my understanding is that this is about £4-500 more than "free".

Still, with a bit of cleaning you won't lose out, it's cheap so will sell for a profit.

What?

The only value a MKIV Golf GTI has is as an engine donor.

Over priced, over rated, flobbery rustbuckets. The instrument packs are great* if you have a blue \ yellow deficiency like mine.

Because of the MKIV Golf, everyone decided they had to be 'semi premium'. More effort went into the quality of dashboard plastics than making cars that drove and handled nicely. Then the age of the millimetric powerband diesel dawned. A truly auspicious decade, cheers VAG.

Luckily, the Focus came and gave VW a horrific shock, making it realise it had to put a semblance of effort in it next offering rather than trade off past glories.

A 'quality car' indeed - whatever that actually means.

Break it for bits, Trig. You'll easily make your money back because of that AGU engine.

I must of just got very very lucky with my one then. Kept it a year, never let me down, it had done 155k, and even managed to make a small profit on it.

Anyway yeah, all MK4 Golfs are shit etc etc.

So... theres an mgb gt for sale local to my unit for peanuts

Needs some welding and some work on handbrake. Am i daft to go for it?

Posted

If chrome bumper and under £500, buy it regardless. If it's rubber or costs any more, you need to find out how much "some" welding is, because it usually is LOTS...
