The 2.0l 20v 850 was no tarmac ripper by any means, but could haul itself around reasonably well.

^ That. They're not bad cruisers but I think the 10 valve would be quite pedestrian.

My step sister had a s plate 2.0 auto which I believe was the 10valve. She said it liked a run up to any sort of incline and foot was nearly always to floor getting the thing moving which resulted in shite economy. Pretty much like my old Mercedes e200 to be honest.

Yep I had one, it'd do 30mpg with me driving it, it averaged 22mpg with the wife driving it, it had to go, bought the wife a diesel ZX instead.

I've played with buying an 850/v70 though never got one, for me it would have to be a diesel or T5, the ones inbetween seem to be neither quick nor economical.

Posted

The S70 I had was the 2.5T, went like the clappers. If you used your right foot it couldn't half drink though.

I think an 850 TDi manual would be pretty quick. The automatic version doesn't hang about but it's too keen to kick down rather than use the engine's torque.

Posted

TDi definitely the way to go with an 850. It's a proper agricultural diesel, with a lovely five-pot growl.

The cat has sat on the TV remote and made Formula 1 practice come on, in silence thankfully.

The cars look real slow ( I am sure they aren't) and the track looks like it is built on some giant cruise ship.

Full-size scalextric would be more interesting. Actually it would too.

My boss has a 13 plate Audi A6 TDi, 1.9 I think, and it sounds much more agricultural than my Volvo. It's by far the least refined engine in a fleet that includes several Transit vans.

A lot of modern diesels sound very 'gravelly', VAG PD and common rail engines are definitely noisier, or produce an uglier noise than the 'low tech' engines that preceded them.

Seems to be going well. Was no seal at all on the sump, have removed it, cleaned it, stuck the new stuff on and refitted it just tight enough to squeeze the sealant out slightly.

Got the oil level sensor to seal as I think that was dripping slightly, and the filter to change them I'll put it together, pack up.and tighten it up tomorrow when its set.

Aye. Some are akin to machine gun chatter. Fords especially. Horrible sound.

Saab rear windscreen fitting is a bastard. Currently the plan is to half four the top row of clips (without the internal ring) as you have no access without cutting into the headlining. Other clips then fitted using mole grips to hold three pieces together and hammering the clip home. Huge thanks to Peter for carrying on (and doing it) while I jump ship and go to the football.

What's not so cool is the flexi section on the exhaust has a hole in it. It does sound like it has a small blow from somewhere, passed the emissions with no issue though so hopefully it'll wait until next year

I just won't buy a euro car parts one again!

Fitted new door lock to Leon of Doom.

Little Allen key retaining screw fell out into inside of door.

Glued new door lock in, works lovely.

Can't open door from outside.

Bumhats.

Tools thrown, can't open door wide enough to get door card off, and it's raining outside.

Quimbaskets.

Dual mass flywheel shagged?

Doesn't seem to be; took it for a roadtest this morning; its very 'washers in the biscuit tin' on idle, n very lazy up the revs (2nd n 3rd gear 'progression) on a drive - I traced this to a leaking/wet with oil front intercooler - both links seem goosed (the usual citroen / Peugeot stuff - my brother had a 1.9D 206 n he was replacing them every 25k miles)... also has a top end rocker cover/vacuum thing at the end of the cam, eh leak...

It went a bit skitzo electrics wise when I, last up, took it for a spin - headlamps now only come on for 10seconds then go off, n the central locking went a bit mental after parking up, making both front doors inoperable via outside doorhandles...

After a smoke and a cuppa the uncle headed off as hed someone coming to look at his restored MGB which hes selling.....

Ive been tasked with fixing some of this built French fail'madness from Thursday onwards of next week, when he flys back to Shetland isles...

Meriva is back together, and in the 5 minutes I ran it to get the new oil circulated it didn't leak a drop.

Gave it a wash to keep the wax healthy, and I'll run it up to temp tomorrow and look again, possibly go for a drive too.

BX has been collected onna truck by the lovely people at Bourne Citroen, who have a second hand head & caps if it's needed (it will be). Depending on what else there is (oil leak or something may have caused early cam belt failure), it may be fixed. Hopefully I'll break even when I come to selling it next spring. It's probably worth more in bits, but I am a sentimental old fool.

Brake imbalance, exhaust leak and anti roll bar link - not too horrific. SCRAP IT.

I 'won' this today, collecting it tomorrow. It's a 1.2 Shwing and if nothing else it's an excuse for a day out.

You did this at the road side - you will be considered in the autoshite new year honours list.

Bren...

I did a SAAB9kLPT head in the street outside my terraced flat. On my own (and without any 'M8s R8s') hiring a local Matiz rattler to do shuffle service to the head refurber....

Fired straight up >> totally WIN

I can't do it in our parking space cos its on a slope and I didn't fancy it slipping whilst on the stands, and the car park behind is a mud pit and the jack would have sunk. Only had to bring my feet under 3 times...

Was like an oily river afterwards when it rained!

The wife's alfa is going in for an mot on Monday. The handbrake is poor again which turned out to be a sticking lever on the calliper again.

There's also an intermittent fault with one of the brake lights which can be fixed with a thump to the lens. Typical alfa electrics. It did it last mot too and I spent hours trying to fix without success.post-5582-0-31492700-1416683918_thumb.jpg

Oh, FFS, just get a lump of 6'x6"x2", cut it in half, plonk a notch 2 inches from one end to hook into the second top rung of the ramp and drive onto it - I'll hoik them out tomorrow and show you what I mean.

Posted

Lol, don't worry. I know what you mean. I prefer doing it this way. The blocks inside the ramps are because I'm paranoid. One day I'll be arsed to beef them up with some angle iron.

I normally use the ramps off my plant trailer but it's not here at the moment.

Well I dunno because I had never heard of Stockton-on-Tees, so I looked it up. Seems that this town was the birthplace of the friction match - which proves that it's the sort of place where anything is possible.

Hah!  I had always thought that it was Ivar Kreuger that had invented the friction match - how wrong can you be :(

He certainly introduced some friction though!

My mate Steven didn't wake up today. Known him since preschool. He only turned 29 on Thursday past. Just went to sleep and that was that.

Gutted isn't the word. R.I.P. big chap.
