Just fitted a new (well new to me anyway) set of front speakers. The old ones were horrible fuzzy fall apart when you touch them things. Now lots less crackles, 1 clip and 2 screws each side, shoom shoom bosh bosh job jobbed.

Happy sunday everybody

Have some pictures from a tractor rally I went to yesterday, not technically spots for a spotted thread but interesting nonetheless.

Hillmanimp... mojo/carbuddies :-

I have no mates ..... SHOCK..... but a faithful mutt who can be relied upon to supply coffee and 'are you not done out there YET?'.

My MoJo was properly polished up recently when, during my back lane disc/reline exploits, a random old fogey stopped and expressed surprise that a bod 'does his own fixings!' "No one does that now, shame really".

Quiet pride from a fitter/turner (who break fixes shop tills) and gets no other chance to smell grease & swear loudly - not appropriate in a retail environment.

Maggicc.... ;)

My Mercedes E280 finally sold this morning to Lord Sterling of this parish.  What a pleasant and painless transaction.  Much more straightforward than dealing with Ebay numpties.  Hopefully LS will be able to deal with it's most pressing issues and get many miles of non-Rover800 motoring from it.

Here's a farewell shot from the bedroom window:

Wait wait wait... Mo Sterling?! OUR Mo?! Merc?!

Arse. Was in a further fettling mood after fitting my speakers, so I thought I'd finally get round to fitting my new valve lifters that have been sat on my dining table since the end of August.

Went for a little drive, got the engine warm, came back and took off the valve cover, pressed each rocker arm with an socket extension bar, I dunno if any squidged down at all, not encouraging! Then I took off one rocker assembly to have a better look at the lifters, by the looks of it 25 year old original parts. All the oil passages on the rocker arm nice and clear, oil inside the lifters wasn't too grubby. Faces of the rocker arms looked ok, no scoring or pitted bits, camshaft looked good too, all nice and shiny. Was only when I waggled a few of the other rocker arms I found the following....

Bugger. Somehow I don't think the little compensation elements between lifter and valve can compensate for all that side to side slosh, hence my top end knocking. Either that or the timing chain tensioners really are on their way out. Bollocks and double bollocks. Might be time to do something unshitely and pay someone to sort it for me.

My younger brother is a general lucky sod he doesn't really do much (photographer) and is currently in the United States of America and is sending me photos every now and then there all arty farty and hardly any show full cars.

Went to Ripley bonfire last night, youngest was more interested in the old tractors pulling the floats than the fireworks. Good lad.

I've been to a auto jumble with some mates this morning, had a laugh and missed out on a type 9 5 speed gearbox for my Cortina which was £100 and bought the wrong gearbox cross member for it too...

Anyway here's a few car park photos that I took.

Today's steed of choice was this Cortina 2.1, it's a real 1980s throw back and a proper laugh.

I really loved this Volvo 66, the Gordini wheels were perfect for it.

This old Merc had a roll cage and timing equipment all fitted so clearly used in anger, it takes a brave man to race one of these!

Wonder if the Merc had a modified seat to accommodate the MASSIVE KAHUNAS of whoever races that?

This is outside at the moment. Belongs to my new neighbour's father. Apparently he's been into Alvises for years as has the grandfather. The new neighbours moved in last week from India - only spoken a couple of times, but he has complemented me on the merc and 2CV.

I appear to have successfully trimmed the fleet from a too many 3 to a not very interesting 2, the only question is not if, but when, I start the cycle again......

Oh yeah, news. Today I have mostly been popping my clay-bar cherry.

Mrs_WoC's new mkIV Golf is pretty tidy for it's age and miles, but the roof in particular was covered in little black marks that I reckon are tree sap. So I cracked open my clay bar, which I've had since last Christmas but haven't had a car worth using it on since then. It took me flipping ages but I've got to say the results are incredible. The paint is so smooth to the touch, I'm amazed, and a little bit more excited about a clean car than a grown man should be. It was a bit windy though, so I think I may have inhaled a touch more Autoglym Rapid Detailer than is healthy.

Claybars are awesome things, I was very doubtful at first but haven't tried one I'm a convert.  They do a lot of cars too, even when they're utterly filthy.  Mine has done a Citroen BX estate, Mk1 Golf Floppytop, Austin Princess, Citroen Xantia estate a Skoda Felicia estate, Rover Maestro and a Ledbury Maestro.  That's probably not the sort of cars these things were aimed at, but I'm a detailing rebel and I don't play by their rules.

Nevermind that claybar graft(although they do good work)

The 735i had a month's worth of tree sap on it.

45 mins to wash, rinse, dry and wax means beading on the way to the station this morn;)

Finally fitted the new coolant temp sensor to my daughter's Punto. Bit fiddly, but found a deep 19mm socket which made the job loads easier and I just need to get my son to connect his fault code reader up to it now to clear it.

Next up, wonky rear light cluster, someone (on here) said they're notorious for water ingress, so will dry it out thoroughly and re-seal it with silicone or something. Then there's the small matter of the heater only working on the 4th setting (they all do that, sir/eBay resistor will be ordered) and then hopefully the boot lid, as have found someone selling one the same colour for £50.

Little Miss Saviour wanted to jazz the car up a bit, so we got some Punto side/boot stripes like the ones FIAT offer as an option on them. No point in fitting them yet though, at least until the boot is on and the passenger door has been re-sprayed due to a scratch.

^^ Mr Corsaviour,

I would recommend Tiger Seal for all your leak banishing, s'what healed my incontinent Samara sunroof.

I looked in the garage today and was reminded that I own this.

Poor 2CV has been rather neglected since my purchase of THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD. However, I'll be taking my rusty Dolly to a specialist tomorrow for some further steering work. It's likely we'll have to zap the track rod adjusters off with an angle grinder before fitting new ones. This is so we can hopefully tweak out whatever caused the last pair of tyres to wear so badly on the inner edges. I could always corner with less vigour I s'pose...

Aaaaaand its broken down already. Three days on the road after the welding and the clutch etc.

Driving along and there was a clunk when I pressed in the clutch and the pedal came back up way higher than normal.  I pulled over and looked in the footwell to see a puddle of brake fluid and the innards of the brand-fucking-less-than-three-days-of-use-spanking-new master cylinder hanging out.

Clutchless gearchanging got me home and diagnosis is the circlip that holds the plunger and spring and stuff in the cylinder has popped out of its groove. I put it back together but since its just plastic the groove is a now worn where the clip popped out and it wont stay back in for long, I reckon. Fucking cheap pish.

Surprisingly not. I cant remember where I got it offhand, one of the landy parts places anyway. Its probably the same crap as britpart just in a different packet.

I guess I will need to get hold of a genuine LR one now.

I don't suppose you could get hold of a seal kit and rebuild the original cylinder ?

Further rocker arm buggeration.

20141027_205447.jpg

Nice pic showing the 4 bolts I removed from one of the pairs of rocker arms yesterday. Seems I went a bit OTT with the torque wrench when I replaced the valve stem seals earlier this year. I'm too much of a scaredy cat to put the stretched one back in and drive to the dealers to get the new ones, asked at 2 local places after work today and neither had anything suitable. Might not be too bad as after having researched a bit it seems like soon after my car was built the design of these bolts was changed, simply 3mm longer to reduce the likelihood of them stripping the thread or snapping off in the aluminium cylinder head. So an hour on the bus to the dealership on Thursday beckons and then 24 updated bolts, which hopefully won't be more than €3 each tops. Bit of buggeration but I dunno what the other bolts are like on the other 5 sets of rockers, better safe than sorry. I'm still a twat for doing the buggers up too tight though.

In shock news I have actually done some work on my car!

I have a pathalogical hatred of rust and always go insane in my attempts to erradicate any chance of the shitty stuff getting hold, so I'm meticulous in cleaning wheelarches of all muck and debris. So, as I had a new tin of WD40 and was doing door locks and hinges (I know the cars new but it lives outside and gets wet) I thought I'd do the arches. Insights are one of the few Hondas we get over here that are made in Japan and it's true what they say about the Japanese built cars being better than EU built ones. The car notonly had liners that fit well, it also has little trims that protect the exposed edges of the wheelarch returns. Bloody lovely!

However, a little bit of muck had got into the return over the past months so I cleaned it out with the refill bit of a biro then squirted WD and then some waxoyl.  I must admit, my insanity is begining to lose its appeal.....

But by the sounds of things your wheel arches are cleaner than a Vulgalour'd interior, and that's no bad thing.
