Good luck sorting out the Mondeo, you've lavished enough attention on it for me to have no doubt you'll have it done in no time.  Best thing about using gaffer tape on Mondeo bumpers is that nobody notices it as a repair any more.

I'm dreading MoT time for the Xantia even though I can so far find nothing it'll fail on.

Some muppet in a range rover (woman driving) just tried to end the merc's life by pulling out of the side road I was 20ft from to turn right across me. Slammed on the brakes, ABS kicks in and I swerve around the back of it and up on to the kerb on the other side of the junction - just missed the BT junction box. She didn't even stop, although the car behind did. Stopped for a minute to catch my breath.

THEN

some idiot motorcyclist did the same thing out of a side road - I was just far enough away to come to a dead stop  without the ABS this time.

THEN

just because I was leaving a decent gap from the car in front doing 50 (in a 60) some clueless chump thinks there's enough space to turn right out of the side road across me. He was wrong and got full beam, horn and ABS kicking in again.

Is there something in the water today? It was 8.15 and I had the lights on. I've never had ABS work before, then twice in one journey. My colleague said two people pulled out on him this morning too. 1st of the month! I only came in the car because I've a cold with a bad chest.

Perhaps you werent driving as defensively as usual cos you werent feeling well?

I wonder if in the future there will be an Autoshite tax disc spotted thread where we deliberately go out to find cars with their last tax disc displayed in the window in place of some novelty item.

Also, the 2CV looks weird with no tax disc.

Well I was doing 30 in a 40 when bimbo pulled out. She was stopped at the white line for a while before so I had no reason to expect the fuckwit to move off. Obviously I'd inadvertently pressed the Klingon cloaking device button.

If I'd been on my bike she'd probably have killed me.

I don't want to take the Charade's disc holder out. Mainly because it's the original dealer disc holder and it takes something away from the car. It can stay for a bit.

Mine's staying, I've got a selection of old discs to put in!

I do look forward to creative use of tax disc holders. The one in the 2CV was a blingy metal one anyway, so is no great loss. The one in the Rover was utterly shit. I was glad to remove it. I suspect it's a very good time to be marketing old-style tax discs.

By the way Dugong, WHY U NO SEND ME DIRTY OLD MAGS?

Stopped off at a BP station earlier and I parked next to a red 207cc on a 59 plate with the bonnet up.

The lady with it was waiting for the RAC and I asked if she was OK, etc. she was fine, it turned out that while driving along the stop sign illuminated and the temperature warning came on. Sensibly she parked up, checked the water (none!) and refilled - this impressed me as so few people can do this these days.

The water was apparently coming straight out of the bottom of the car so I had a quick look and found the bottom hose had come off altogether. No damage or signs of any splitting and the spring clip was still on the hose. I had no tools with me so couldn't do much, and the RAC were en route anyway.

I said it seemed odd for that to have happened and asked when she last had it serviced. Basically she had just picked it up from the dealer who had carried out a major service including new coolant and relieved her of 450 of her pounds for the privilege.

Methinks the mechanic / apprentice / tame gorilla had forgotten to do the hose up.........oh dear!

Booked an appointment at my local garage for The Volvo to have an MOT test and some handbrake fettling next Thursday, by which time it will have been off the road for almost four months.

At least its mileage has been kept down during that time...

^^flippen eck (Re that Pugeot 207) that is bad Parky!!

Re Tax discs im going to leave mine in, no doubt if I remove it the old disc holder will leave a load of goo on the screen which I cannot be arsed to clean off.

Bought a pair of seat for the 306 off ebay, as I want to tidy it up for sale. Done the ABS sensor that put the light on, and have sorted fan blower, so that should make it a bit more desirable. Tax is out today, so it's getting parked up and the ZX will become daily driver. Clatter clatter XUD.

Chap at work has just spent 860 getting his 99 V70 estate through its yearly service, mot,new brakes and cambelt done.

He stopped off on the way home to top up his washer bottle but didn't check he'd shut the bonnet properly

Resultant bonnet opening at 80 mph has written it off..........

On a £860 service , would the washer bottle not have been topped up?

At least he didnt blame the garage , which seems to be standard these days.

To be fair I would expect some washer fluid after a £860 annual service.

So, last Sunday this happens.

Went to a show over in Hinkley with the family in tow.  On the way back there's a slight tinkling sound that quickly becomes a horrendous death-rattle and we grind to a noisy halt just off the end of the M69.

In the succinct words of the AA patrol:  "SUSPECT ENGINE U/S".

Wise words.

So there followed four days of cycling to work, whereupon a quick begging text message, £34 and three trains later I am in careful possession of my sister-in-law's 'spare' car:  VW Lupo.

Despite having checked the oil on the Beetle before setting out in the morning, there was nothing on the dipstick by the time the AA deposited us home.  So, I suspect one way or another I have run the motor out of oil.  Either it's fallen out somewhere (surely I would have noticed), it's burnt it (didn't see any smoke) or I'm a complete numpty who can't even check the oil level properly.

My tame VW-expert friend will no doubt be happy to dismantle the engine to assess the damage, however, I have very little cash to spend on cars at the moment.

Maybe you dropped a valve, causing smash up and loss of oil. Typical way for a VW to fail, happened to 2 of Dad's Beetles.

Went to remove the Xantia's tax disc and holder... then found it has neither in the window.  I don't remember removing the tax disc holder, much less the tax disc itself, but I must have.  How very odd.

This is what I'm hoping; probably the best possible scenario given the symptoms.

Two out of four cars booked for an MOT on Friday. The hardest part has been the explaining of the delivery/collection logistics to Mrs DSdriver.

I have just made an insulting offer on a car on eBay that I don't particularly need and fills exactly zero of my criteria for next car. I have a worrying feeling the offer may be accepted.

Third world problem : I've got money burning a hole in my pocket for a new car and just can't find anything that floats my boat. It's all over priced crap or it doesn't set my pants on fire.

Went to my local filling station this afternoon in the Suzuki. On the way there I was musing over advertising it as I'm ready for a change.

Was put slightly off-balance by the cashier out of the blue asking if it was for sale (Me - "It could be...".) and him offering to buy it there and then .

I wonder if he'll go through with it.
