Has anyone tried the DIY kits? The air con in the Fabia is a bit weak, but not willing to spend £50 for a re-gas.

I used a Halfords kit on a Ford Scorpio, worked well.

Yes, it worked well on the Xantia- but a garage regas cost a lot more then than it does now. I think I've lost the attachment so I'll have to buy another one if I have to do it again. GOOD WORK.

Cool Air mobile A\C specialists are decent, not sure if they operate in LP-land mind.

From what I've seen they offer it free of charge if it doesn't work. Seems like a good idea, as knowing my luck the chances of it just needing a re gas are about the same as me turning a profit on a car.

Check the small print - you only get it free if the aircon doesn't drop ambient temperature by ten percent at KwikFit I think.

That's not great.... it's meant to be 20 degrees tomorrow, if it's still 17 degrees in your car after they've "fixed" the aircon, you have to cough up. Aircon should be cold enough to shoot icicles at your face.

Not for the first time, R4 van has decided to casually abandon the air mixture screw from the carb by the roadside resulting in a lack of forward motion. Seems that unless they are very, very tight then they wobble out. Last time it happened was on the autoroute near Rouen so that this time it was in Burnley at least made life a bit easier.

Now to have a rummage through my assorted R4 bits to see if I have a spare. Certainly got a few other (different) carbs but only time will tell if I have what I actually need.

I feel a world of pain coming on.

All old cars are shit etc.

I'm sure I remember skodas having the same problem with the jikov carbs and there was a modified screw with 2 orings on for more friction .

It is a shame to see some of the stuff piled up in that yard but remember it wasn't such a throw away society then and you can bet that most of the cars there were scrapped because they were utterly fucked.

Posted

Fuck you, the early 90s, for throwing away the good stuff and leaving us with Puntos and whatnot.

Posted

I remember stoating about scrapyards with my dad in the mid 90s and most of the cars were utterly kippered in one way or another. Nowadays two thirds of the stock looks more roadworthy that the customers cars.

Regarding air con, can't you put an airline on the filler valve, fill it with air and see if it leaks?

Posted

If there's any pressure in the system it'll fizz horrible poison goo all over you if you don't have the right gear . I recently unwittingly did this trying to get a light out a 5 series. Unpleasant.

Rot killed most of them back then - i used to go to the yard on jackson st in St Helens - the bodywork on most of them was utterly fucked, hence they were bridged.

Nowadays cars dont rot like they used to, mechanical/electrical maladies are usually what see them off.

I miss the smell of gear oil and damp upholstery, and the sight of cracked windscreens and spent feu orange air freshners.

That was a cracking yard. Not been in probably ten years but there was some very rare and elderly stuff even then. Its also the last time I saw a Dacia Denem in the flesh

The company i worked for got one of the contracts to shift cars under the scrappage scheme...they soon subbed it out but i got to pick up quite a few loads from various main dealers in my delivery area.

Some of the cars it broke your heart to see 'em going to the breakers, from my own and my mates loads some memorable stuff.

low mileage one lady owner Starlet, brought from serviced every year at and scrappaged back to the same dealer, hairy arsed mechanics nearly in tears there, fuckin criminal that one.

30odd k miler E36 BMW 318 as new...WTF.

low mileage 3 door Civic, bubble shaped one, i picked this up from Llandudno, it was bloody lovely.

Lots more that Shiters would have pleased as punch to have got their hands on.

Obviously there were some right dogs which people gladly got shot of but far too many really good babies slung out with that bathwater, why the fuck couldn't they have done a swappage scrappage, where a person who owned good old shite could get a new car, but there could have been shit scrapped in the good ones stead...typical government fuck up.

As my old mum would have said, cue Irish lilt, ''someone needed a bloody good kick up in the arse''.

Jackson St St Helens is still there - and still the same.

Peugeot 405 failed its MOT but only on a suspension bush. £68 to get that put right plus £30 test means another years motoring for under £100. Bargainlicious.

Fuck me, people know mallys in jackson st!!! Best yard ever, take wellies tho. Malls is in Haydock though, cos there is another breakers in jackson st St Helens itself by my old Ambulance station.

Vulg, get your arse to the quacks, as if you are on meds for depression, they may need upping for this new "reactive depression" due to whats going on with your mum. You wont feel much different, but they will bring you a numbness which will allow you to operate day to day. Secondly, and please don't think I'm telling you how to suck eggs, tell someone all your woes who doesn't know your family and sound it out. Also, in times of heavy stress, my cure is to set out on a long walk from your house. 5 miles or so. Trust me, going alone for a long stroll is really really good. You will feel 10 times better and more able to help.

This is coming from someone who is not a keen walker in any way. I just found out how helpful it is one day. Sounds daft but I came back with all my answers, and a very clear head. Chin up dude

I'm coping, we've had some encouraging news and Mum has been given until Monday because she appears to be showing some responses, we're just not sure if it's primitive reflex or something more.  She's also breathing partially for herself now, they've been bringing the sedative levels down and her heart stuff has stabilised.  It's still very unlikely she'll survive, but so far she's defying medical convention and being a stubborn old mare, like usual.

I have a rare thing, I hesitate to call it a condition, that my brain does to help me cope with extreme stress which is that I black out or fit.  It only happens when I'm doing nothing so I'm not at risk behind the wheel of a car, nor do I need to be on medication.  It's like a reset button, apparently it's just something some people do.  So having a grand mal seizure in the waiting room in front of my family helped reboot my system and I'm presently on a bit of a natural high as a result and will likely be for the next couple of days.  I'm pretty sure it came about because it's the first time I've been sat idle for several hours and my system felt it was okay to get to work and sort me out.  It's not epilepsy, there's nothing wrong with me and I've had numerous scans to try and determine what's going on, it's just how my system works.

Scares the fuck out of everyone else when it does happen though.

Posted

Vulgalour , still thinking of you all . that reboot thing you do sounds scary but somehow in a good way , is your real name  Mac by any chance .

Best wishes .

Posted

Nope, I'm not Mac.  Real name is Angyl, as some shiters already know.

Posted

I do that too! Never heard of anyone else doing that seizure thing until now. If it helps, that's great, as it's a bloody tough time for you - you're getting a little bit of help from somewhere.

I was pissing around on the drive with the cortinawhen the guy here to read the elecy Meter started to chat about it. He said his mates got a beige one in a garage that he's needing to get rid of as the garage is getting knocked down. Oh reeellly I said here's my number get him to give me a buzz if he wants to shift it. Exactly what I need *

Do your fingers cramp into a claw when it happens vulg?

I don't especially want to talk about it.

Been getting calls for the BMW today (which has been on autotrader since Sunday) one guy was up for paying me the £2.5k I wanted and was about to come down from Ipswich to buy it this afternoon, anyway a minute later I bottled it and called him back to cancel. Just enjoy using it too much, such a good car.  A waste of 36 quid for the advert though :-(

Thoughts are with you Vulg, just take each day as it comes right now that's about all you can do mate.

hopefully got a friend coming over on sunday with a press to remove and replace my wheel bearing on the mondeo
