So yesterday morning I took a drive down to South Wales to check a Jaguar out. Sadly it turned out to be a bit if a waste of my time. The seller texted me about half an hour before I was due to arrive to say "he had to go and couldn't find the keys" 🙄. The car was unlocked though and whilst it was a bit filthy inside and out, all the important bits (underside and sills) seemed to be OK plus it has a new MoT, if only I could have taken a test drive and heard the engine running and tried the gearbox....

Whilst there I spotted some old cars sitting outside a unit. Not as bad as by Coventry Road in Birmingham but getting there....

Then after that I took a bimble home to watch the comedy that was the final of Euro 2024 (🤣) except I fell asleep and woke up to silence which confirmed what I had predicted.

Should be readily available, just need more info on which engine as I’m not sure 1.3 and 1.4 have the same clutch.
Shoot me a PM with some more details and I’ll be happy to help!

@IronStar

this guy is currently trying to restore a Yugo Sana but is struggling to source a clutch pressure plate. Is that likely to be something available over in Serbia or are they difficult to find over there too?

He's tried the usual suppliers but the clutch size they offer is wrong apparenly despite it saying its compatable .  I have put him in touch with Ironstar via FB so hopefully he can help

Clutch is apparently partsbin mix and match special. I think we found the right one, and parts numbers that should enable ordering cover / plate / bearing separately for a complete assembly that’s right for the car.

Just turned into our street and, as you can see the Metro station from there.... A brand new Metro Tram was passing 😲👍

Impressive....

So this happened in the field behind my house today. A Mk1 Megane cruelly taken from us well before its time!

Concerning thing is… the roof of my house is visible in the second photo, and we didn’t even notice… in fact we were only alerted by this picture in the village Facebook group!

Cheers man. Yeah, although I did have a bit of a wasted journey, it did allow me to see the car as I wanted to see it, without anyone badgering me etc...

I can also use it as an excuse to knock off a bit as he has contacted me again explaining that he has now found the keys.

It is difficult to find a solid Jag of that year and shape which is ULEZ friendly, plus all of the underside seems solid from what I could see.

It'll need tyres for sure and a general tidy up. After that it's a matter of taking a test drive to see if it drives well and the gearbox holds up. If so, it'll be mine. XJ Sports are pretty sort after.

I'll ask the lad if he knows owt about the Calibra as I reckon it needs a good new home.

On the subject of car fires, on the way home from shitefest there was a massive queue on the opposite carriageway of the A14 as a modern Audi A3 had caught fire and pretty much burned itself out.  I was rather less upset about that than the Mégane above.

Do Audis have a particular weakness that causes them to spontaneously combust, à la Zafira B blower motor?

One thing I can think of would be the DPF differential pressure sensor if it was a diesel, they are somewhat known for melting and potentially catching fire on certain VAG TDI models. It's rare, but it can happen - for some reason it's often shortly after a cambelt change. Perhaps if the hoses get split, but not certain on that

If it was a TSI then a even a minor petrol leak on one of those could be disastrous, high pressure fuel (even more so than MPI) scalding hot turbo, etc - again, not common by any means but all it takes is for something to have got disturbed during a recent repair

Or a daft subwoofer setup with unfused live wires.... 😅

Could have popped in to say hello. We’ve just been flooded! Spent most of the day chucking out wet cardboard and hoping the electrical stuff is ok.

bit too occupied to spot anything today and they had the no-photos sign out ( which i respect). But there were a couple of 1970s porches about and a pre war Aston Martin.

I’ve just been fixing* the rattly exhaust shield on the x1/9. All bolts tight on the three studs but it’s worn larger holes of the years and is now loose. Larger washers don’t help as it was still allowing the shield to move but I have professionally fixed this using a door lock spacer from the 2cv spares box which is the right size for the stud and soft enough to mould to the shape of the shield when the nut is tightened.

Not likely for a while, I was out on an extended road test and did a second lap.

Ah, one of the newer tenants who we have not interacted with have the car sales place behind the neighbours warehouse. Did you buy? I’m not entirely sure what’s going on over there - they’re not officially a tenant.

No, I work for another company up by Foxhills golf course. I was out in one of the cars we have for sale applying a few finishing touches.

This strikes me as a proposal made by people who think if they say something should be so it can be, if they wish hard enough. Also that the people involved don't understand the laws of physics.

How can a tyre have the same wet weather braking grip at 1.6mm tread depth as when it was new with 7 or 8mm depth?

The way I read it is that if the current wet weather braking grip standard is X, whatever that is, part worns will now have to meet X. I assume that a new tyre would therefore have X+ levels of grip as the tread would be deeper.

Currently, according to estimates from tyre maker Michelin, 50 per cent of car tyres are removed and replaced before they’ve reached a residual tread depth of 3mm. This is still well above the legal minimum

Yeah, usually cause they're either cheap shit, or cracked to buggery in my experience. The Golf has 5mm tread 2019 dated budgets on it, but they're in no way safe. It's not a 'waste' and they don't need to be 'saved', they're not fit for purpose.
