Mainly grille and front body work, but a definite improvement. My mistake. Thought Ogle did the whole thing.

Well this morning I went outside the house to have a fanny with this SCENE TAX WIDE ANGLE PHOTO WEAPON

A1ANuOlh.jpg

it's for sale! buy it!

It was a total pig to start and had a bit of a misfire,  so I thought I'd have a look at the dizzy cap and stuff. For some reason I put my hand on the dizzy cap while it was running and got a right flipping belt off it - so that's a new cap required.

I had the old ones off and there was evidence of someone going at them with flipping sandpaper, they looked knackered:

By fluke I had a new cap and arm for my T25 in the garage, thanks to VW not being total spazmos, the cap and arm were exactly the same as on the polo, so that was the misfire sorted. Apparently these have a common fault that they flood themselves when cold due to a dodgy temp sensor, which I reckoned this might have been doing because it would either start instantly, or not at all.

I left it to warm up til the fan kicked in then hooked up VAJ COMB to see how warm the ECU reckoned it was.

MAwfZ8Lh.jpg

Yup, 40c - you can see the temp needle on the dash pointing at about 95c, so I rang Eurocarparts and they had* a sensor in stock so I went down and obviously they gave me the wrong fucking one because they are absolutely shit (but about 8 miles closer than GSF)

After about 20 mins tooing and froing I got the proper sensor off them by giving them the reg for a mk3 golf gti instead. Then another ten minutes to swap the paperwork over and I was out of there! EFFICIENCY!

Fitted the new sensor, car sorted - drives really nice actually. Someones coming to look at the fucker tomorrow afternoon, too. Shazam!

So this morning I set off for an early morning tat delivery pickup event.

It was looking nice when I left the house then 5 minutes later it looked like I was entering Mordor.

5 minutes after that thanks to a mental hale storm the road looked like this. I was 12 miles into a 100 miles journey at this point.

After about 10 miles it cleared up other than a bit of snow I made it to the M74 at which point I entered blizzard conditions for about 10 minutes before driving out the other side of it. Weird.

This is the first time I've driven the Audi any distance and I was really impressed. It felt solid on the motorway and felt quick enough. The interior is fantastic although the sporty seats maybe a little too tight for a man of my excesive body structure. I actually wish I'd had a use for it for  the Mrs or something but I don't, which is why it needed to go.

I didn't get a picture but I spotted a Mondeo on the M74 doing about 65-70 about 3ft from the back of the Vectra in front. I though it was some road ragg' incident but it seemed the Vectra was towing the mondeo with a tow poll!

The guy in the Mondeo unsurprisingly looked terrifying. I bet the rozzers would be licking their lips if they spotted them. Amazingly Cavette DIDN'T spot them upside down on the hard shoulder on his way home.

Anyway, I got to the Service in gretna, had a cup of tea and chat with Cavette before we fuelled up and headed in opposite directions. Mandatory petrol station shot!

I steamed off up the road and about 5 miles later the ZX felt like it was losing power so I pulled up a slip road were it promptly conked out. It wouldn't crank so I squeezed the primer bulb a few times and it started so I headed up the A road road to lockerbie . Just before lockerbie it conked again but I did the same and it started up . Fearing a problem with the veg/diesel mix in the tanked I wanged another 20 quid in it and although it wasn't running right it kept going until I got to Cumnock when this happened.

It then did it again a few miles down the road but then was fine all the way back to the house. Cavette says it was running fine on the way there and I believe him so I'm guessing mixing the veg in it with a load of diesel has caused a problem. I'm going to change the filter tomorrow, which I'm hoping will help.

Just upgraded Tapatalk to latest version.

Also done a couple of edits to hopefully sort out quote problem.

I should have said earlier sorry: Good to meet you, Glenn.

As said, convinced it'll be the veg. It's a bit of a bastard when it's cold then once warmed up it's fine, it was pulling like a train on the way up there and keeps on rolling on very nicely from **mph onwards.

The A3 was class on the way home, it seems really quiet and refined, but it's been a while since I drove a petrol engine car any distance. Even filling up is weird, I hardly ever go to petrol stations these days!

Agree about those seats, defo not for my frame either. I found out what the electric switch was for though, it does the lumbar bolster thing, so I had a play with that on the way home. Just given it a good clean as it was rammy after the journey, my lad will think all his Christmases have come at once when he sees it. He's currently in work text messaging me like mad asking about it. By the time he gets home I'll be nicely on the way to getting pissed!

Yes and you!

I'm glad the A3 has gone to someone who'll enjoy it. IfI was your lads age and had that car I'd pass out with excitement.

I've found that modern Audi's are aren't that exciting on the A roads but really refined on the motorway. You can get up to crazy speeds in them and not really notice.

Thanks to explosie-cabbage's parts store, the 205 Sceptre now has a fully-functional full beam again.  Typically of car manufacturers' supply chains, the two switches are made by different companies and although the pair of wired connecting blocks fit each of them, they're not in the same place on each switch!

I refitted the manifolds and re-connected the engine in my Rover 25 GTi today. Turned the key and it started right up and sounded sweet!! Tomorrow I'll change the oil and attempt to clean out the cooling system. Actual progress!

Next time I get the bright idea of removing the rear lamp cluster on the C8,I would like someone to slap me.

Then slap me again.

Then some more for good measure.

2 minutes to remove, 5  mins fannying about with bulbs, 30 mins to get the MOFO back on and bolted up.

Posted

The only time I'd advocate removing the rear clusters from a C8 is just before sending it over the bridge, as Peaches Grappletwat is bound to back hers into something when collecting her filthy spawn from school, all the time muttering about how she'll be late for the end of day sales of Gregg's pasties.

Disco has just sold for £600, which is a bit disappointing. Hopefully the buyer will now actually buy it.

I agreed to give a Yaris the "once over" yesterday. 09 car, approaching 40 k miles. Owned by a mate's daughter from new.

  • Running on TWO cylinders (of three). Coilpack U/S.
  • Front brakes shot to fuck - wrecked discs, one stuck piston, both calliper slides sticking. Outboard pad on the driver's side was in three pieces: antisqueal rubber back, pad backing and friction material (what was left of it!) all separate, only being held together by the calliper and hub carrier.
  • Rear drums stuffed with brake dust - shoes OK though!
  • Three illegal tyres
  • Cracked and leaking screenwash bottle.
  • Fucked wipers, hanging off.

Those wee Yaris' are pretty good cars. This was just sheer neglect. I mean, you don't have to be Adrian Newey to notice that your wipers are hanging off and the tyres are shot, never mind the fact that it was probably putting out about 22BHP and making a racket under braking.

More and more prevalent these days.

I decided to try to fix the scooshers on the ZX today. The bottle and pump is between the wing and the inner wing, which is a twat of a location so after a prolonged battle with the arch liner (I hate those fucking christmas treet trim clips) I could see it but had to slacken off the wing at the bottom to get it. I managed to get my sausage fingers in and get the pump out so stuck battery charger on it and there was a faint whir but nothing any of note so slam dunked it on the work bench a couple of times and great success it burst back into life! I fitted it up and nope still didnt work, tried the rear scoosher and Bzzzzzzz it's working.

Its the button on the stalk that's knackered then? i switched the pipes around so when you scoosh the rear windows it fires the front ones, well it would if one of the scooshers wasn't snapped. I've glued it back together but we'll have to see if it hold. Dunno if this will caused a problem mot time but I can't be arsed changing the stalk over as I just need to sell it on.

I've got a fuel filter on order but it smokes Iike a bastard and runs like shit on startup so I recon I'm going to need drop the tank and purge the veg out the system to try to get it running right on normal dizzle.

I have been asked by Ma to get the Micra_Sterling booked in and sorted once and for all. So that'll be:

â— An original exhaust system I recently purchased fitted on.

â— A spring clip reattached to the gear lever that helps centre it in neutral.

â— Wiper motor fitted.

â— Coolant flush.

That should see it back in rude health hopefully.

First car-related outing in the 404 today, it sounds like a right old bag of nails under load. Hopefully getting the engine bay detailed by a 'concours professional' will sort that out!

Also saw infamous Shiter RobT in his giffer-tastic Rover thingy, which looked a nice enough old bus. Nothing much else of note baring a lovely Maxi and a Falcon wagon with too many doors.

Recently, I said I'd got a radio for someone and now I can't find the PM or remember who they were.  I found another radio, and now my camera is playing up so I can't show you either of them.

Anyway, whoever it was that I said could have the radio if they wanted it do speak up and as soon as I can get my camera to play ball I'll give you some pictures.

Now enjoying that long wait while you hope the person who's 'bought' your car on Ebay is actually going to cough up. Last car I sold on Ebay was the Bluebird I think. Got all worried about that but the chap came good, just took a while to do it. If I buy something on Ebay, I'll be communicating within seconds of it finishing! Have actually got a phone number, as the chap had fewer than 10 feedback. Wonder if it actually works?

Today was the day that I made the long awaited start on stripping my Cortina down ready for it respray, after spending all afternoon on it I'm really pleased with the progress.

Bearing in mind that the cars never been restored and is 40 years old in March everything coming apart remarkable easy, Removing the grill and indicators hasn't revealed any hidden horrors, the only PITA I've had so far is when i removed the passenger wiper arm the wiper socket dropped inside the scuttle and it's no inaccessible without having to strip all the heater box out from under the bonnet, arse!.

post-3625-0-75778800-1389560888_thumb.jpg

Had the wheels off and drilled all the pop rivets that hold the chrome trim around the wheel arches off, those trims sell for silly money on ebay, £100-150 each!.

As it was getting late and the light was rubbish i made a start on the boot area too.

post-3625-0-45789300-1389561003_thumb.jpg

Again nothing to worry about here other than the overrider that I can't seem to get the bolt out off, it's in a recess inside the rear valance with the fuel tank up tight against it so god knows how your meant to get a spanner or socket onto it to undo it.

Next time I'll get the door cards removed so that i can get to the handles and mirrors off then it's off to the paint shop for it.

Oh whilst i remember i do have one problem, I bent the front plate when removing the cover a while back, today I stupidly hammered it straight on the brick wall and damaged the lettering...

Can you still buy these Wright style plates or would i be better off buying the raised digit type instead?, I'm annoyed about this as they were the original plates too.

Gosh. The road car is tempting. Only tempting though as I've no money. Especially as the Disco isn't technically sold yet. Bother.

This afternoon I dismantled and removed the wiper mechanism on the Carina to see if I could sort the grinding sound it makes when operating and the nasty hot smells that come from the motor after a while on high speed.  I took the motor casing off and it was immediately obvious that water had got in at some point, as there was quite a lot of rust in there.  I painstakingly cleaned all the rust off the rotor and the magnets in the casing (which was a royal PITA as the rust sticks to the magnets so is almost impossible to get out of the casing without using a pair of tweezers), wiped everything down with a bit of two-stroke oil and reassembled.

Put it back in the car and it's still as noisy as ever.  Bollocks.  Must be the gearbox then - but that's a job for next weekend as I'm going to need the wipers during the week if the forecast is anything to go by.

Hopefully though the Carina will be getting pulled out of daily service in the very near future, as I appear to have just bagged myself what I hope will be a bargainacious daily hack off eBay.

Trig - just touch it in with a small brush. Not worth replacing the original plate for.

That was my other option, it doesn't look quite so bad in the photo though and the "J" has started to split too, I'll touch it in and see how it looks.

Barret's Peugeot is very nice, one of those cars with a real presence about it, even if the driver's seat is disintegrating!  A woman asked him 'is it German?  He did well to keep a straight face.

Was also good to see another shiter in attendance, Vantman with his BX auto.

Last night I was thinking I've not seen a mk5 shape Escort in a long time.

Today I see a mk5 shape orion (think mk3) - the rarer variant, on the way to work.

I'm in Morecambe metals, making a collection of shredded steel and spotted these two sad cases awaiting the inevitable. Wish I still had my Audi, there's lots of useable posts on this one!

This morning I got a text from my friend and tame mechanic Steve "Tinworm" who specialises in BL tat, he stated that he had a 2-door Rover 800 Coupe in. I was due to contact him anyway and book my Micra in but this seemed a great opportunity to go there anyway and look at this car:

130120147697_zps04a232a3.jpg

130120147701_zps7f7173f1.jpg

130120147698_zpse6e83e03.jpg

130120147703_zpsa35caffc.jpg

Its a 2.0 manual, nice car, I was obviously invited to have a drive of it which I did and I must admit, it felt fairly nippy for a big car in a strange way. But it just wasn't a V6, it didn't sound like a V6, it sounded like a Montego.

Nevertheless, it was very clean, so clean was it that I went and spent some money cleaning mine up soon after. The sills had obviously been tackled at some point but apart from that, it was a clean and honest car. Steve does have it for sale so I reckon I'll knock up a For Sale ad at some point.
