An interesting one, at work they've taken half the car park and are building a new part of the factory.

Now, one of our drivers collars me the other day. "Is your car covered in overspray?" 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Turns out it is, a fine grey like aerosol mist.  (Not sure if it's paint, or a sealant type deal.) I told my boss my number plate and now the insurance agent rang to discuss, a claim or some such shite.

However, the car paint is already fucked and has a maingy roof and lacquer peel.

Fuck sake.

One of our drivers roaming about in a brand new hire car, they went to his house to take pics, massaged both cheeks and finished him off.

... I've heard nothing, I'm at work today and spoke to one of the women in the office for about 16 decades. Her car got done too, they said it's a clay bar and lacquer job... Except if it's on a piece of plastic, then it's a replacement part. But they said "yeah, there's a courtesy car.... Collect it yourself." She said nope, you're dropping it off.

Anyway, let's be honest, let's talk write off and buy back. Which they've done to two guys at work. One car he bought for £300 and another £500. The write off they're paying is £1200 and £200 buy back.

I need to ring the woman from insurance in morn, because I'm the only one without any bastard idea what's happening. If they offer me £50 write off and £400 buy back I'll be annoyed.

I wanted a small runaround which was better on fuel than my CR-V for sharing commuting duties and I've been missing my old Puma - I had a Millenium about 2 years ago but that turned out to be a badly described pile of mould and rust so didn't last.

A quick search on Facebook Marketplace pulled up this one - correct wheels, correct 1.7 Yamaha engine, decent colour and low mileage with plenty of MOT for a sensible price, only 20 miles away.  The owner turned out to have several and was thinning out his collection, properly nice old chap who's now into Boxsters instead.  I viewed it in the dark and pouring rain earlier in the week, left a deposit and got a lift over yesterday to collect it.

I love it - these are very addictive little cars and this one drives superbly, as it should with only 64k on it.  Heavily undersealed, minimal welding needed over the years and rear arches intact if not in great condition, it's barely moved for 2 years and for £1,100 I was happy.

What caught me by surprise when I picked it up was the extra folder of paperwork that came with it - he'd shown me the fastidious records he'd kept in the last 6-7 years so I knew about that but I hadn't realised there was an enormous Motorpoint folder which has literally every receipt and invoice since 2000 in it, including the sales paperwork and a photo of the car when brand new taped to the front of it.  Turns out the first owner had it 13 years and took exceptional care of it, I'm a total geek for that stuff so I'm made up with that.  I also found that the service book is so full there's a second one with it and it has a full Ford service history with the same dealer up to 2013 and 57k miles - it's only done another 7k since then and has been serviced and maintained since.

The oil is very clean but has been in there a couple of years, the timing belt is due on time if not mileage and the tyres, whilst a matching set of Michelins (a first for me, my stuff usually has to go straight to the tyre centre to lose whatever mismatched budgets it came on) are quite old.  They're still looking good though and have loads of grip so I will let them stay for now and keep an eye on their condition.

Verdict: I've lucked out, with a little bit of maintenance and care over the next few months, this can become a really, really nice example.

Oh, and if you know Pumas and think those wheels aren't right on a 2000 X plate, you're right, they'd moved on to spoked wheels by then.  In the first owner's paperwork stack is an invoice from the Ford dealer for 4 alloy wheels at the time of sale; it appears he specifically got the turbine ones added on.

That looks great. I've had a 1.7 Thunder for a few years and love it - they're such good fun and still cheap to buy, although prices are creeping up and you do see some crazy prices from some dealers.

I need to swap mine for an estate car quite soon, but I'm sure I'll miss it!

Have you seen the new Mustang ?😵😫

I have never been a big fan of the Mustang but they are a great car with a big following. The new monstrosity is blatantly cashing in on the name.

Ford have form for that to be fair.

If you're not planning to put the tripod on the road draining off the stale stuff and replacing it with Aspen alkylate fuel would help; it stays fresh far longer than pump fuel.

Never heard of that before so I Googled it.  Fuck me!!!  To fill the Volvo up with that stuff would cost me 500 quid...

I bought a steering wheel. It is made out of 100% pure brown.

While it's in better condition than my current steering wheel, it's just starting to fall apart and will no doubt end up in the same state as mine next year. Plastidip time I think!

Went to Diddly Squat Farm today

The masses were out the front in the "2 hour" queue in the spitting rain, while the canny were in the barn behind enjoying bacon baps while sitting at picnic tables and buying their token t-shirts and mugs from the table in there instead

It was pretty clear  from the outfits of those in the queue out front that they weren't there for the kale...   Then the heavens opened.

Anyhow the baps were tasty, the daughter was happy, and on the way down the lane away from it all, saw that Kaleb fella turning int' lower field on that Lamborghini tractor.

Tomorrow, Bourton on the Water car museum perhaps

Watching the latest Harry’s garage YouTube on his fulvia zagato resotoration. There’s some very detailed English-wheel metal forming. Worth a watch.

Also disabled that really annoying beep on ignition off that Sony Head Units do to remind you to remove the faceplate. Irritatingly it forgets all it's settings when you disconnect the power.

ooh...ooh...ooh - tell me how, please mister.

Does your rear wiper wash work ? If not, pound to a penny the leak in the boot will be because the pipe has sheared (it runs down the left hand side of the boot hinge, and usually snaps somewhere between there and the LH rear seat. TADTS, including mine

They call it a caution alarm, it's supposed to be to remind you to take off the faceplate.  There may be something in the menu, I think from memory you may have to turn the stereo off to access that option in the menu (i.e. not on cd/radio/whatever input).  If it's like the mechless Sony unit I have in my van though, it's not possible to turn it off.  Some of them just don't have the option to disable it for some reason.

Since this is a facelift version does it have the 3ZZ-FE engine that is known for oil consumption? I had a 2000 Avensis with this engine and it used 1 liter of oil per 1000km.

Does the 3ZZ burn oil?
The 1ZZ does pre-2006. Oil control rings get gummed up. Burns oil.
Strangely, the 2ZZ doesn't apparently (I bloody hope not)

I dodged a bullet. I was considering a 2.2 D-4D Avensis estate. Apparently, it's a horror of an engine. Well known HGF, even more so than the K Series.

Going to look at 2 C Class Mercedes estates tomorrow. Relatively modern ones, but starship miles of course.

Also just contacted a guy about a 2008 E Class Diesel estate that's only got 96,000 on it. I'm not quite sure what's wrong with it, but it's in London, so most definitely a ULEZ throwaway.

EDIT: Just did a cheap car check on it. He forgot to mention it was a Cat C. I've nothing against Cat C/D cars, but I only want this for a year and it was an absolute pain in the arse to sell the last Cat D I had.

Slight aside but the 2ZZ is a totally (and much superior) beast to the 1ZZ.

I am not an expert on this but I have learned that several Toyota engines from this time can use oil. And the 2ZZ engine I do not know how it is. If you search online for this, you will probably find some information.

The 2ZZ has Yamaha stamped onto the block. It really is that good.

The 2.2 is not a horror of an engine, just as the K Series isn’t (in any tune). What it does have - is a very well documented issue. But, in fairness, it’s a far more advanced and (I think) superior engine. In rude health, the 2.2 is streets ahead of the 2.0. Immeasurably.

The 2.0 has a great reputation, and I’m a fan. But, in all honesty, a 2.0d knocking out 115bhp in the year 2010 really OUGHT to run forever. And ever.

Just the same as the 3sfe petrol engine has a better reputation than the 1zz-fe. But the latter is still a far superior thing. They didn’t all suffer after all.

Just my 2p.

Currently on the hunt for a thermostat housing Vauxhall part number 24418432 after snapping the egr lower bolts and failing to repair the housing. The egr bolts on as part of this housing and I snapped both, tried welding 10mm nuts on and snapped them flush, put on pillar drill and tried easy outs; didn't budget then drilled the bolts out and tried tapping new threads..... one side was OK and then the other failed due to corrosion/bad luck. Will end up tapping out to too big a size to fit.
Vauxhall can supply one for £460.
Struggling with used as no ones answering their messages but this seems more common on the astra 1.6 then the zafira 1.6.
Simple job while my aunties away on holiday for the week.......34558bacc3b215ee1c42d35f78ced60d.jpg

marvelous marvin, the mini-metro has achieved an MOT pass.

on the second time of asking, mind, but a pass is a pass. its take a real good flush of  the brake fluid, and the front callipers have needed some persuasion to get them working, but now a least they are functioning as they should. no wonder there seemed to be little or no brakes on the car on the  drive over there!

what did it fail on? two worn ball joints, with an advise for brake imbalance on both axils.

the worn ball joints were mentioned as an advisory on the last MOT several years ago.

now it has had the ball joints changed, and the brake balance advisory notes have been addressed. and it now has a shiny MOT pass to show for it.

which is nice.

only thing i need do now, is find it some winter quarters for it to wait until the better weather in the spring.

Appreciate your thoughts and thank you.

Agree about the 2.0D. That's absolutely woeful. Mercedes get ~170bhp out of their fairly recent 2.1 unit and yet keep the CO2 down to 104g.

Now has a Lotus cover on it (neither the Corolla or Celica ones actually fit inside an MR2 engine bay)
