Fuck me, Wifey said, after coming home from work, "The car sounds wrong, it sounds like the wheel is falling off".

OK, I thought, sounds like hyperbole but I'll have a look.

OK, doesn't look right...

She's done well over 100 since it came back from a local garage who are meant to be very good...

4 out of 5 nuts are loose.

I've always done wheel nuts by feel, having fitted tyres as a job. Mrs J's Toyota has these new fangled alloy things, so out with the torque-wrench. Fuck me, is that all? I want to jump on it.

Just heard there is a world wide paper shortage. Look out ! Panic buying bog roll to start very soon.

Just don't tell the government. Everything was fine until they said there was no need to panic buy petrol and everybody just heard 'panic buy petrol'. Most people were blissfully unaware up until that point.

We're driving to Norfolk at the weekend so Mrs Yoss popped out to the local Sainsbury's at 6am on Sunday. No queues then but they were already starting a couple of hours later when we took the dog out. So we've got enough to get there if not back again. It helps that we now have to use E5 which tends to be the last stuff left.

It's just been in the news that cars taking the NCT (Irish Most) are going to be plugged into OBD shortly, covering the engine and safety systems. At the start any codes found will be an advisory item, but sometime next year will become an outright fail. I presume the next stage will be to check that the egr or dpf haven't been mapped out, and maybe to check that the car is still running on the factory map.

It's going to be awkward for owners of PSA 1.6 HDis. Every one of them has a code for a glow plug fault. And changing the glow plugs is a horrible job. I'd say it will result in a lot of them being scrapped.

Edit:- I just went to the NCT site. Engine codes are not part of the test so far. They will check the VIN, odometer mileage, ABS and EBS. HDi owners can breathe again. But I'd say checking for egr and dpf operability will be the next stage.

What's to stop you buying a £5 OBD reader and clearing all the codes 5 minutes before your MOT?

That's a nonsense. They can't say "oh but previous codes", because the answer to that is "Yes, I had a fault and it was repaired". They can't fail you on something that's been fixed.

I've got some trouble with my fuel trims and I get the occasional EML for running lean (I've got a couple of fixes I'm going to try over the winter). I'll clearly make sure it's not on come MOT time.

I once discovered that kwikShit hadn't properly torqued my wheel bolts when my car did a comedy kneel when doing a 3 point turn on a busyish road, that was fun.

National Tyres did that to my 635CSi back in 2000 after fitting a new tyre. N/s/r wheel parted company with the hub at about 50mph approaching Elstree South roundabout.

Luckily the wheel didn't part company with the hub completely, but it was very wobbly, multiple turns to tighten them up!

Porsche approved* repair

Bristol Sunroof Centre phone number no longer works. Dropped an email but doesn't give confidence. Did hope they would fix rather than needing to replace.

BAS International hoods in Newport Wales will do a glass hood fully fitted for £744. However earliest appointment is April next year!

I checked the actual NCT site since, and so far it only applies to Vin, mileage, abs and airbag. But with ABS and airbag the system does a self check every time the ignition is switched on. So even if the codes were just switched on they may come straight back.

Absolutely, and that bit I get (and support). Most modern cars tbf have tests on both those systems. The light goes on at startup and goes out after testing, so the OBD bit is rather pointless (also, on my 2004 car, the seatbelt too). If those lights don't light up (because the bulbs have been removed), I believe it's an instant MOT fail.

A quick check says....

https://www.motester.co.uk/mot-test-of-instrument-panel/

SRS - Light inoperative or fails to go out - Fail. Major.

ABS and Stability control - all of the below is a Major and Fail.

Warning Lamp

  • Missing
  • Does not illuminate
  • Indicates a fault
  • (For ABS) does not follow the correct sequence

Obviously, all above where fitted. They're not testing these on a 1937 MG.

Have a look on ebay for a face-lift 986 hood. They're not hard to fit and there's got to be plenty out there now.

My '98 car has a glass rear window and it's certainly a 2nd hand hood from a later car; the previous owner only spent money when he absolutely had to!

I did look and currently seems to be around the £650 price point for a second hand facelift hood. Not a huge amount around.

It's a bit of hassle with the plastic window but in the summer it's not as huge a deal though. The plastic windows are much bigger than the glass and also fold up easier, giving better access to the engine bay.

Found a trimmer down Newton Abbot way who has availability end of October. Can do the window for £220 all in.

Think I'll do that.

Second scrapyard trip today has yielded the spare headlights for the princely sum of £50 for the pair. Good going given one passenger side one is £40 on eBay and drivers side ones are unobtanium. Don't need them at present but you never know, and if I didn't get them I'd absolutely need them at some point. That's two spare driver's ones and one spare of the other side now.

Boxster booked in for a repair with these guys at the end of October:

https://www.westcountrytrimmers.co.uk/

Recommended by a Porsche specialist down in Honiton that my mum uses for her car. The guy at West country trimmers said he's done loads of Boxster hood repairs over the years.

£220 odd all in. About a third of the cost for a new glass hood. The hood on mine is in excellent condition and is OEM Porsche. So didn't really make sense to put an aftermarket one on. Also I can get this fixed months sooner than a new hood.

Can Jack Smith Motor Trimmers do it? they're dead cheap (it's a fave of us MR2/MX5/S2000 owners). Good job too.
Having my roof replaced next week. £330 all in.

Unfortunately didn't know about them until I've just read your message here. Best price the guy above could do for the Boxster with a new glass screen is £880 all in. He couldn't get anywhere near BAS International price. But then BAS manufacturer the hoods, so easier for them to be highly competitive on price.

I'm quite happy that I'm getting mine fixed to be honest.

Fair enough. I'll ask him if he does them anyway when I'm over - might be useful for future reference.

One of my friends has a Golf he's not used for a few years and has decided to sell. I rather like it, it's an unloved Mk3 CL base model. He gave me first dibs - I was going to go and have a look and make him an offer... but another mutual friend has expressed an interest too, as a little project to fix up with his two boys.

Decided to step aside and pass first dibs onto my other friend - it'll be put to much better use as a father-son bonding experience than as another old shed I don't really need. :) C'est la vie.

You could always offer advice.

You need a bluetooth obd2 connector and the software on your phone, and keep pressing "Erase Codes" from.the waiting room.
