H. IMP DOES ACTUAL CAR WORK.

I know, mental, yeah! People probably forget I used to sometimes do stuff to my cars (quite often wrongly as people on these pages often pointed out) and I'm not just here to shitpost.

The 944 has had rusty wings since before I got it. Obviously it was going to be the first thing I did when I got the car.

So here we are 15 months later and they're still not done.

IMG_20200405_170611.thumb.jpg.831a819134ec92d60cb485720f5bada0.jpg

If anyone remembers I have tried to buy proper repair panels but they were fucking shite so I sent them back.

IMG_20200405_184424.thumb.jpg.b08ca074d556172e722ea2dc934bbb80.jpg

IMG_20200405_184411.thumb.jpg.7601de2c4c41c0a092ce80aaf8a8923e.jpg

IMG_20200405_184401.thumb.jpg.37d31d7062cf7dfa4a9b9a9cb941cb0e.jpg

So today I decided to try and sort one of the shitty wings. Didn't start well with me breaking the side repeater trying to get to the bolts down the door frame.

IMG_20200405_102832.thumb.jpg.65a7d13d446595a5f85db711334f45fe.jpg

However after an hour or so the wing was off.

IMG_20200405_142602.thumb.jpg.6aa53fd90fdc9bbde8779782e0c975a3.jpg

Helpfully the awkward one to get to next to the light wasn't there. Reckon thats a bumper off job so hell, thats fine with me.

Sadly things didn't get better after breaking the indicator. The wing was pretty rotten. This is how much I had to cut out.

IMG_20200405_145620.thumb.jpg.8ecb29d0ad1950bf61856b1a361cb57c.jpg

Was at it for a few hours, including beer breaks.

IMG_20200405_171117.thumb.jpg.ddd5ce715f9e36c55ccbe76e6d0a8fa8.jpg

Until this happened.

Will try and sort it tomorrow but probably need a new liner. It had been a little temperamental for a few minutes before but went full on bollocked in no time, so I may be able to blag it for a bit. I've no idea if Machine Mart are open, I'll check in the morning unless anyone else knows? Sure theres an emergency plastic liner somewhere in the garage though, will look.

It was already getting late though so I sacked it off for the day.

Wing currently looks like this. Its a well fucking awkward bit of metal. Lots of curves and angles.

1821862611_AGallery_55.thumb.jpg.cb8eafc18410206f7979ca8d5cc19e05.jpg

I reckon the chances of it being the right size afterwards are pretty much zero. I was constantly measuring the wing on the other side but its equally as fucked so I was guessing where the end of what I was measuring was. Hopefully it will be close enough though.

It can be metal and filler, thats fine. Will probably still be better than the £230 or whatever it was I'd paid for those other repair panels.

Took advantage of the weather to get the 164 out into the light now I'd got a reasonable set of tyres and a fresh battery for it. With that done I tried a circuit of the village, 3 miles and my first actual drive in it. Having been idling fine on the driveway, of course it ran like a horse's arse as soon as I reached the halfway point and spewed out of the overflow once I got home. Topped it up once it had cooled down and put it back in the shed for now. Photo definitely flatters the old thing.

I've recently noticed more rot on the front inner wing that I'd thought, which isn't what I'd hoped for.

I've welded twice in my life, once as a lesson and then once trying to save my touring bicycle half way across France (in Dijon, probably half way between Brighton and Milan?). I was pretty terrible but I have become curious about trying again.

I have been half thinking about getting another welder since my last one packed up through lack of use.  I've welded in anger twice in my life - once to weld a side stand onto the Spacy, and once to weld the Innocenti's outer door skin back onto the frame - both are still holding up several years later, so either I'm not completely shit at it or it was complete beginner's luck.  I'm going to have plenty of time to practice for the foreseeable though...

Not got much fettling done this weekend, for obvious reasons, but as it was a fairly warm day I did fire up various members of the fleet to test the aircon - this is the first time in a long while that it's been warm enough for A/C to really be noticeable.

The only two cars where pressing the A/C button made any discernible difference were the Sonata and the Mondeo.  The Sonata's aircon is brilliant, proper ice cold.  Shame the rest of the car is fucked.  The Mondeo's isn't quite as good but it still has a noticeable cooling effect.  The V70's and the Rover 45's made no difference whatsoever.  They could just need a regas m8 (like the CX) or they could be knackered - I have no idea.  I was also reminded that once we're allowed out to play again I need to have another attempt at doing the aircon belt on the 75 - not a job I'm relishing.

I drove the Tempra to Tesco and decided to risk opening the sunroof.  Fortunately it works fine.  Also for the first time since I've owned it I didn't get any fanbelt squeal at all - maybe the warmer weather has made it SFTU.  The power steering is still losing fluid at a rate of knots though - I've ordered a bottle of Lucas leak fix stuff, one of the few snake oils which actually seems to work, so I'm hopeful that'll sort it.

Yesterday I attempted to widen my driveway to provide parking area for the camper. Being lockdown I didn’t have the materials I needed (Wickes we’re out of stock for delivery), so I tried to use whatever I have lying round. Lesson learnt: wait for the proper materials. I’ve now just made a mess to be honest.

Going to old house (half a mile away) to collect the saab. I need my strimmer out of the boot. It hasn't been started for 4 weeks or so since we got back together and fingers crossed it should be painless.
This and the bini could be up for a swap for an s/v70.

I seem to remember that there was a similar famine in 89/90, so G-prefix cars were also comparatively thin on the ground.

Back in August, I asked on one of the French Renault 16 groups whether anyone actually had original air conditioning on a TX that functioned, at last I had a reply (in French timescales!)

Here it is, and the air comes out at 11 degrees C. Damn I'd like one so equipped.

With plenty of time on my hands I thought I'd change the rear grumbling wheel bearing on her Focus. Did it about 3 years ago-shagged again (Chinesium?).

Putting one of these on.

Do you think I can get the four bolts holding the hub on undone-can I f***. Didn't think I did them up that tight. Next plan of action is to buy a new back plate and grind the fucking lot off.

You can see two of the little bastards poking through-access to them is interesting! Back plate shagged anyway.

Partial success: went outside for the time in what seems like absolutely ages and stuck a 'Powered by veg oil' sticker that my daughter made me on my car. Opened Lada boot, moved stuff around, took photographs. Back inside now.

Here is the very moment I realised how much work I actually have ahead of me before I can even think about putting this back together.

That was the mess...

I sorted it out to this...

676BF4EA-8CC5-4F64-9F81-EE52A0DAE22D.jpeg

Yeah still looks shit. Was only meant to be a stop gap as the camper is in the way where it is currently and I can’t get hold of the sub base which I was going to whack over the area. The ground there is really uneven and o just placed the slabs hence the wonkyness...

Of course the only thing worse than it looking utter shite... is the fact that it was impossible to get the van on! There wasn’t enough room to turn the van into the space! FFS...

So now the van is on slabs on the grass. (Not ideal)

Should of stared at it for longer, with beer in hand of course!

Turning circle of a supertanker doesn't help.

Keep up the good work ?

Today’s the day I shall brave the shops... it’s been a week since the last foray and that was only for a few bits... so a proper shop is needed. Only really important question is...

Saab convertible or C5  Tourer?

If it was taxed I would be using the 2CV hands down.

Following on from my escapades yesterday-finally got the bearing out. Need to wait for new back plate before reassembly.
