I can't find a mph/1000rpm for the Auto, but Autocar tested the GTi 2.4i manual and quote 21.1 mph/1000. A test of the 2.4i Auto by Drive say " the overall gearing in top is not much lower than the GTi in fifth."

Sticking to UK motorway speeds I have always found the cruising is ok, only when in Germany with the car does the short gearing really show up.....

Given that I had 18 years of a 4-speed auto, which in overdrive top would produce 70mph with the engine barely turning over at 2050rpm, I think that just emphasises just how badly a 4th ratio was needed in a CX automatic. It might have contributed to better fuel economy.

Some Googling suggests CAMC is the Caravan and Motorhome Club. It looks like being a member of CAMC is a must before you can sign up for Fuelpecker.

Ah'm oot.

On the Fuelpecker front, I just got an invite through our work scheme 'Perkbox' which is quite widely used by unimaginitive companies to reward* their employees with tat. I signed up. Seems like a worthwhile think to do since not only is the Esso already the cheapest in the area at 116.9p a litre, this car knocks another 3p/litre of unleaded. I fill up there anyway.

I went up to that there London yesterday morning, then took the tube and went to a meeting. Tube back to Victorious late afternoon then home. Counted only 1 MWI on the streets, and 9 or 10 on the tube. One had a thing the size of a WW2 gas mask strapped to his face.

To be fair, some people's looks are improved if they're wearing one.

MWI - Loughborough has a vast number of Chinese students at the university and an oriental in a mask was a common sight, but not any longer. I think they've all shut themselves away.

It's been many a year sat gathering dust. But today I've finally started working on the dyane again.  It's a start, Credit cards taking a mega hit tomorow tho for more new panels. Eeekkk.

Whilst out for work today saw a recovery wagon loaded with a sandglow Allegro Estate. Not sure where it was off to as it had no wheels or front doors, but can't think of any scrap yards in the direction it was heading, so hopefully being saved rather than scrapped.

I see Bangers and Cash tonight has three MG's from the 70's still covered

in original factory wax. Might have a look at that.

I spent 3 days last weekend welding up the driveshaft tunnel on his Saab.

No pictures from the latter, final  finished and undersealed state, but we get the idea

Had to put my classic van in to get a few things done. Handbrake cables, exhaust, reversing light switch

and the speedo cable back into the gearbox, which I gave up on coz.....

All underneath stuff that, at just on the right side of 70, is not the time of life to be underneath anything,

apart from an obliging female and I don't know any. Fairly recently found these guys, father and son,

trading as DFTR Automotive, after my last mechanic, old school, got pancreatic cancer unfortunately.

Anyhoo, would like to recommend these guys if you are in the Dudley, Stourbridge area.

They do love a Mazda but are willing to lower the tone for a 305 van. Luckily. Very reasonably priced, enough

that I bunged them a tenner for a beer. At the moment they have a Staaag, a CF1 camper, a T3 and  three

or four Mazdas in, two of which I got a rainy pic of.

Probably this one that just went to auction.

Drop links?  Nut splitter.  Everything else leads to much spinning, frustration, swearing and possibly tears.

Posted

/\ Except on a Volvo V70, where random bits of strut reinforcement around the drop link mounting point prevent you from getting a nut splitter anywhere near it.

Nice project for someone. The rest of it came off on pallets, including the cylinder head and engine block. A straight eight Horch?

I did the drop links on my Outback a couple of weeks ago and had the same problems with both the far-too-small-IMO allen key socket rounding out on 1 and the rusted to shit nut rounding off the corners on the other. I don't own either a nut splitter or a grinder so ended up hacking them off with a hacksaw and junior hacksaw. took about an hour each side with about 3" of saw movement each way. Not the most fun I've ever had, and it didn't sort the front end rattle either. next time I'll cough up for a grinder for sure.

Acquired by somebody on the Allegro Facebook group.

Might end up a spares car as the front end is rotten and there is damage underneath from being fork-lifted around.

I did a repair there on my old Saab 900 (TADTS) but mine was no where near as professional. I just hammered a load of bits of metal into a rough shape and where it didn't fit, I MADE it fit.

Hats off to you, good job.

Thanks Mr Imp. I was a bit up against it to be honest, with time and circumstances against me . Probably spent  30-40 hours on all of it, including stripping suspension both sides, all the panel work, cutting everything rotten out, rustproofing, and rebuilding it.  Unstiching that front portion of the chassis leg meant I took a little longer than I had to, but I wanted to get all the rusted areas cut out completely.

With some shocking pattern panels on the market , its was nice to find the  repair panels SaabBits sell were great quality,

Had a voucher for Black Circles so treated the Saab to a set of Bridgestones today. Had a slow puncture on one of the front tyres, and the other front was a landsail so bit the bullet. Only paid for 3 of them with the voucher applied so a decent deal. Fuck me what a difference, genuinely changes the car. Dropped it off after that to an upholstery place that was recommended to me, they're going to tackle this seat over the weekend. Will also get it serviced once I have it back. It's going to be a pretty well sorted car when I'm done with it, then I'll no doubt end up selling it ? 20200313_103233.thumb.jpg.21bd990c0f81a3c72f12d260e5b9ed48.jpg

I washed the car for the first time this year.

Now it's dried it looks shit again... I used the brush because I can't be arsed keeping the thing looking all polished up when it's so fucking rusty, and I'm a fucking barbarian.

Must sell Saab now - Business has come to a point that I need a truck!

Some time ago I said (probably after a drink) that I'd like to take the 164 to Trigfest. Yesterday I realised how little time I have.. Day one: Start it up for the first time this year and actually get round to registering it in my name after three fucking years. The lighting in here leaves something to be desired but the stale fuel fog is lovely
