Might have a wheel bearing on the way out on the Princess. Difficult to tell. Low 'wubwubwub' sort of noise, increasing and decreaseing in frequency in line with changes to speed. It's also vibrating through the passenger floor at certain speeds, not through the driver's floor or controls. Sometimes have a bit of vibration through the pedal under heavy braking too. The last checks I did a few weeks to a month ago didn't highlight any play or grittiness so it's something that's only just started to happen. I'd turn the radio up if there was one fitted. I was a bit dubious of Mike's diagnosis of wheel bearing when we were out today but other mechanically minded folk have suggested the same on describing the symptoms to them.

The rears were easy enough to do when I did them back in 2013, and they should still be good, so it's probably a front one if it's any and hopefully they'll not be too nightmarish to do. Getting close to MoT time again, and looking due for an oil change and a brake fluid flush so I guess we're heading for a Spring service soon.

Swap the wheels around and see if the noise moves, it could well be a tyre.

It's just come to my attention that we have an American diner in our locality.

Apparently it's popular with American car enthusiasts.

I got hungry looking at the menu.

Has anybody visited?

No. Never been. Seems a bit far to go for lunch.

Daughters BINI is repaired, after her boyfriend managed to knock a plastic wheel arch off the front wing.

All the clips were buggered. The plastic Moulding had the matting pieces compromised.

I found some number plate nuts and bolts, some plastic padding and glued the bolts to the wheel arch.

Once dry I applied a touch of black sealant to the bits that touch and stuck it on.

Then put the plastic nuts on the inside of the wheel arch.

Then I took the one unbroken clip and took off the other side and refitted it with the correct number of clips.

Whilst waiting for the plastic padding to dry I fixed the rear passenger grab rail, but putting the self tapper back in, dealt with the billowing head lining. Using staples.

And put the door seal back into place.

Checked the fluid levels, added screen wash, checked tyre pressures and then was asked if I'd noticed a weird drone from.the gearbox.

Hum 2001 Bini, Midland gearbox, 98k, gearbox oil replaced at 80K.

I said, yes what you describe is backlash due to old fashioned abuse, ask me again when it's screaming. And stop driving like Michele moulton.

And stop driving like Michele moulton.

What? Why?

Who is Michele Moulton?

What?

How?

I note the bit in her wiki bio about her swapping cars with Pat Moss, if I recall correctly Pat Moss drove the Quattro as if she had never been away and Michele still put on a good show even though she struggled a bit with the Healey. Both of them still were at the top of their game.

So the collecshun fred went like this.

Walked down road to bank. Stood in long queue, got money, walked down to Roy's house, gave him the money, found he'd lost one of the keys, searched, nope. Found spare, fitted new battery, fired her up and drove the few hundred yards home.

Mrs Roy comes home, tells him where he put the keys so he drops them on his way to chippy.

Bit tight in drive, but even a fat twat like me managed to get out.

I'd left the oil filter on the shoe cupboard as I knew I'd need it but Mrs Imp had hidden it so it took me about an hour to find it as she had gone swimming so wasn't answering her phone.

After checking the Princess over, the front passenger wheel bearing has a small amount of play in it, all other corners are fine.  Probably worth doing both front bearings rather than doing one and waiting for the other to fail.

In other news, Princess and BX met properly today and I think it's fair to say I have a type.

Has anyone here been to the Hammond micro car collection in Maidstone? Visits by arrangement - surely we need to arrange a 'club' visit?

Ok this got some likes and positive feedback. When I'm feeling sociable I'll give them a call/email and see if we can organise something for early summer.

That's not a '55.

I believe it's a '57 but stand to be corrected. Probably by Junkman.

No Arthur, you're right.  That is definitely a 57.

As some of you may have seen I got a dog dick red (Cort 16?) Merc sec over Christmas but all has gone quiet since, mainly cos fuck all has happened. On collection it coasted to a halt halfway home, then recovered an hour later. This was it's first ruh out since 2003 and didn't build confidence. I replaced the repaired fuel pump relay but wasn't convinced this was it then the weather stopped play until Saturday. On Saturday I tried to change the fuel pump, shit out because 1985 steel pipes  and got changed to go out. And, - nothing, no fuel pump. Then 5 minutes later it was fine, at least this time it was on the drive, not the A19.

Today I changed the pump and filter, the only thing I found was the wiring past it's best before, a bit green where crimped and black and stiff when I stripped it. Here's hoping.

The pump, filter and accumulator drop out as a unit. They are straight onto a short 15 mm bore pipe out the bottom of the 90L tank. A little planning is best!

Shiny new pump and filter before cover goes back on. Motor Factors do not stock 15mm bore fuel hose.

Manky wiring.

Sounds like Mike dropped in a V8 when you weren't looking.

Well, a rover V8 does fit on a princess gearbox.........

I actually had a reasonable amount of success on the fettling front over the weekend.  As well as getting the Buick running again, I also managed to get two of the 75's locking wheel nuts off.  I discovered, quite by accident, that by sliding a 20mm socket with a long extension bar over the head of the bolt and batting it back and forth in a certain way with a large hammer it will cause the bolt head (the bit with the key pattern in it and the slippery chrome plating) to become detached from the rest of the bolt (the two halves fit together with splines).  Then with the aid of the aforesaid large hammer, a 19mm bolt extractor socket thingy can be twatted over the remaining bit of bolt which can then be wound out.

So I took the front wheel off to see if I could see what is causing the rattling.  It actually all looks fairly newish under there - nothing is particularly rusty, and the wishbone bushes look brand new.  I still suspect it's the drop link, but they look a bit of a twat to do so I'm going to leave it until MOT man confirms my suspicions as I don't fancy tackling the job if it's not strictly necessary.  The drop link that's on there looks fairly recent and all the boots are intact, but cheapo drop links often don't last too long, and it is a bastard heavy car.

I was half expecting the front pads to be down to almost nowt as well, given the aforesaid lardiness and the fact that it has very little in the way of engine braking, but there's still a good 6mm on them so they'll last for a while yet.

Then I took the back wheel off and swapped the wheels front to rear, as the back tyre had a lot better tread so putting it on the front would give me better traction in the wet.  Took the car up the road and it's pulling to the left, which it's never done before.  Get home, shine a torch at the (rather scuffed) sidewalls and find that the tyres are different sizes front to rear (fronts are 205/60, rears are 215/60), so my cunning plan hasn't really worked and I'm going to have to swap them back.  And buy a tyre.

Also, the Y10's speedo has decided to go haywire again, so it's obviously one of those intermittent faults which I'm just going to have to live with.  Fortunately it's quite easy to unplug the speedo when it does go mental, and with these fancy new telephones with GPS receivers it's easy enough to keep track of one's speed, especially now I've got the fag lighter working again and can keep said telephone charged up.

You can do drop links on a 75 without even removing the wheel. Grab the link and give it a shoogle to check for play. They also go through front ball joints but thats a low pitched knock.

Have you checked that the pad anti-rattle springs are present? Springs are also a 75 thing, is there a broken piece lying in the spring cup?

I miss my 75, it did need mended, but you always knew what was wrong quite quickly!
