Having tried to find the kit recommendation thread and failed miserably, can anyone recommend me a radio aerial, either internal or windscreen mounted? The cable routing on the R8 is just absurd and my pattern aerial didn't even fit.

Failing that, a decent quality DAB head unit and windscreen aerial? 6Music and the Absolute decade stations on the move would be more than I could ever ask for.

ETA: this thread has passed 50k posts

I DO NOT recommend a windscreen dab aerial, I had one and it was useless. My £15 magnetic external one is fantastic, although I've not tried it in Scotland yet...

Lovely. I've just started noticing these in the last couple of years or so - as much as their predecessor in fairness. Hope it serves you well!

I've always secretly liked this shape, drove a fucked one for a friend a few years ago and it wasn't too bad, I'd have one if it happened.

Infact these are the first modern car I ever went in nd noticed. A friend and his dad excitedly picked me up once in his dad's brand new 20 miles on the clock S reg one back in the day. No serck on that one though. Then my step mum had a brand new V reg one.

The front doors are fucking humongous though

I've got a co-pilot with windscreen ariel, like Beko says the reception isn't great. I get an annoying whine off mine too, it's like driving a 70s car without a suppressor on the alternator.

Productive couple of days on my ex Bornite/Also Mike 306 cab. Fitted a new rear screen and a complete set of new hood hydraulic hoses, all now operating perfectly, no leaks! Undamaged upper door trims replace wonky and bubbled ones, side rubbing strips satin blacked and all electric window regulators fully lubed for summer action. Knackered fuel gauge turned out to be a dry joint in the cluster.....Mot time tommorow.....post-20412-0-51271600-1528356081_thumb.jpgpost-20412-0-37745700-1528356695_thumb.jpgpost-20412-0-31475700-1528357284_thumb.jpgpost-20412-0-52330500-1528415421_thumb.jpg

Number plate porn!

Thoughts of economy aside, they were the clincher!

Home to Shitefest is 520 miles, and I'm hoping it'll do it on one tank just to please my mingebag tendencies. Average of 48mpg should be doable if I've got my calculations right.

The burd had one of these prior to the 172.

Stolen driving was 40mpg, gentle 60mph cruise was 52ish.

They are too much fun to hoon, expect 40:)

Actually, scrap that. Just realised this is Derv, not 1.1 pezza.

I imagine she could be heavy on the nose;)

Just remember that when approaching corners with gusto!

The one I drove was owned by an idiot and it said 53mpg on it when I got in, I had it down to 45 but I did batter it (it needed a de-clag). 1.5dci though...

Collected my steed for Shitefest this evening. I was cutting it fine and my only other option was a cheap 1996 BMW E39 528, but I didn't fancy the fuel bill in that. Reason for fussiness was it had to be classic insurable, and I've wanted to try one of these generation Clios for a while.

Diz rather than pez shot.

Bit boring I suppose but it has Serck plates, and a snazzy wiper arm action. Has the same diesel engine as fitted to phase 1 Clios and 19s, and tanks along nicely at 70 odd which is good seeing as I'll be doing lots of that in the next few days.

Nice one. I did actually see this on Auto Trader and thought it looked decent.

I really liked my MK1 1.9D Clio. Not sure what it's like in the later cars but I found the heavier engine made it handle better.

I have a near identical fly killer transformer (the top one)

mine has a built in capacitor based voltage doubler which gives it a nice snappy arc

I also once shoved 600V up its 240V clacker, to say it produced a nasty arc would be an understatement  surprisingly it did not blow it self up during that probably due to my 600V source being limited to 900Ma (I was using an old 180W Low pressure sodium leak transformer ballast)

but if you really want to die I mean upgrade your insect killer/zapper may I recommend using MOT? and not the car kind... :) 2100V at 1 Amp should fry pretty much anything including people...

I have just noticed that the bigger xformer is neary 4000V at 9ma and no caps , it has sustained a nice arc in the past ,  preferred choice :-)

the black boxed one has a voltage doubling cct in it and is a bit lacking in power ,,,,,

I drive like a giffer so hopefully will achieve mega mpg.  Dizzler wouldn't be my first choice but I was running out of time to find something!

Driving position is quite comfy although there's zero lumbar support on the seat back (probably has to be an RXE for that option).  I think I'll need these lads after the 10 hour trip...

I think that the factory picture is Vauxhall.  The line on the left looks like Viva gearboxes, but the one on the right looks like something else so perhaps boxes for their larger cars.

I'd have thought - takes a deep breath - that they'd have made Viva gearboxes in Ellesmere Port, but the larger ones in Luton.  So perhaps this is early production, might be set up at Luton and moved to EP later?  So I'm reckoning that this is Luton in 1964.

That's my punt anyway.

Just been to see the dentist, was expecting to just have a new tooth sorted out (well, started to sort out) instead had a bloody tooth out! Never, ever go out with a dental nurse, then not go out with a dental nurse, then go back to the SAME dental nurse!

I hate to say it: Ursula was looking GORGEOUS! We actually had a nice chat, she asked about the dogs and I asked about hers (not a euphamism! :)   ) and we chatted. Carried on talking while the dentist rootled around in my mush, dificult with hands and sharp object doing terrible things to you.... perhaps  I am a sado-masochist and was just never aware :)

In actal car news, Merc continues to display zero lights of doom. I wonder how long it will be before I feel confident when I start it that no faults will appear?

I was reading about this site and thought It might interested some folk who want to get rid of a modern for some reason or other . You put your car in and it goes of to wbac and loads of other car buying sites and come back with the best price for your car. Quite useful.

Result!!

I have to say, my 5 year old son asks about this car every single day. He loved it more than he let on, and it was a sad day when it got sold. Unfortunately, I just really struggle with broken things - and money wasn’t flowing too fast last June.

Anyway, when the time comes can you please give me the nod?

Good luck with the MOT. The only advisory last time was a sticky calliper (from memory) and I had that done.

Good luck!

Sorry if this has been done to death but how are you checking the gearbox oil level? that quantity of fluid would normally be expected to leave traces if it was exiting somewhere or into another component?

It's a long way from being done to death, so please feel free!

I am constantly looking at dipstick levels. At present, it's showing clear fluid just over the maximum mark when cold, and slightly higher when the engine is at operating temperature. It took in another half-litre at the weekend, and I suppose I'm going to have to pour in the other half-litre that I've still got. That makes three litres of Dexron III that the box has swallowed to date.

What I don't now understand is why the fluid is showing up as clear when the stuff I'm pouring in is red.

It's nice to be back behind the wheel of a Land Rover, unfortunately it's not mine but the garage has kindly loaned me theirs. I'm still doing the sums on mine and wondering if it is the time to take it off the road for a full chassis change rebuild. The existing chassis is not that bad (it's had a rear crossmember and last year one outrigger) but I want to keep it long term so would like to get a galvanised chassis. It would probably be cheaper to sell this one and buy one already done; however I'd then be starting again with loads of other unknowns and most are diesel. I know it's going to cost a fortune as there will inevitably be other things that need replacing, but it would be a structural/mechanical rebuild rather than cosmetic. I'm not up to doing it anymore (funnily enough, when I started work, my first job was helping to change the chassis on a Land Rover) so it's going to be a big bill for labour on top.

First job is to buy a stop-gap car and review my money situation, I might have to keep working a bit longer. I've also realised it's underinsured as I wouldn't be able to replace it like for like, they seem to have gone up a bit.

I would drain the transmission sump and have a good look at what comes out, see if anything settles out overnight.

How is the transmission fluid cooled, ie is there a failing gearbox to engine coolant heat-exchanger and your ATF is getting into the coolant?

Does the final drive have a seperate oil supply?, and could your ATF be draining into that? The ZF 'box is normally used in RWD cars so the transverse FWD final drive is possibly a separate assembly.

Some twunt stole the plastic chrome towball cover off the merc at some point this week.

I mean it's worth fuck all but why??

Apologies if this is different on the CX.

The normal procedure for checking auto boxes fluid levels is to dip them with the engine running after they have had a decent run and are up to temperature then have been left to idle. I shouldn't worry about the colour as it's pretty difficult to see when it's on the dipstick or wiped in small quantities on a rag.

I think there is an oil cooler, but will have to check again.

There is no mention in Citroën's own internal service manuals or HBOL of there being a separate oil supply for the final drive.

Yes, that's how it's done for the CX auto.

By contrast the 4HP22 dipstick in my old 635CSi had to be read when cold.

I'm flummoxed as to where that quantity of fluid can be going without a trace. Is it shifting ok and kick down working properly?

Sudden thought / the dipstick hasn't started to slide through the bung at the top has it leading to changing readings?

Very exciting times, the wheel refurbisher has messaged me with some photos of my now finished SD1 alloys! They have now gone from looking like this.

£190 all in which I don't think sounds bad? That acid dipped and powder coated with the tyres and everything. I got a good discount to be fair as he's a ex workmate and he's after some publicity from me which I'm more than happy to give.

He's dropping them back to me on Saturday so I'll get some photos of them back on the car then.

remove bottom dash panel and kick panel and you hould be able to find aerial wire- those pillar mounted aerials arent that hard to change - ffs when i did the one on my maestro i forgot to use the tie a piece of string to the end method an had to feed it through manually!

Not that bad really - exhaust, rear brakes and a plate on the inner sill? All the minors sound like arse covering in case you were from the ministry....you didn't nip round first to see if they would do one by post and accept PayPal did you?

The tester was the brother of a mate at work and supposedly 'friendly'.

Looking at the advisories I would guess at 'not getting any'.
