I believe she had an armour scheme as strong as Revenge class BBs, but a previous refit had put a 4" or 5" ammo locker above the main belt & that's what the shell touched off, that explosion was too much for the belt etc etc.

She was fast because of massive engines, about 130,000shp compared to 90,000shp in Nelson.

She should never have been put in that position. As a Battlecruiser she was light and fast but against a Battleship she couldn’t have taken many hits. It’s like putting Amir Khan against Mike Tyson, all the speed and agility means nothing if the other guy gets a good hit in early. The Prince of Wales with its better armour should have led the charge as that could have taken a punch.

Admiral Jackie Fisher conceived the Batlecruiser idea, the aim being to hit first, hit hard, and get away quickly. A good idea, but flawed in practice as the sailors in Hood, Queen Mary, Invincible, and Indefatigable found to their ultimate cost.

Poor working practices could have been a factor. It was common for anti-flash doors to be left open in the turrets to enable faster gun loading. A small fire up top could easily spread straight down into the magazine storage and with all that cordite stacked up....well.....

Interestingly there was a programme on BBC4 earlier this week about the Battle of Jutland and they tested the effect of a small fire above a scale model of a magazine. The words whoosh and kablam spring to mind

Sad news for DollyWobbler, a pantograph wiper has gone downbird.

On the way to Guildford for my jaw surgery in Herman, and 30 miles into the 270 mile journey, the wipers just stopped dead in the pissing rain with no warning.

Having blindly navigated to the verge, I concluded that there were some stripped teeth in the motor and jury-rigged a tow rope to the wiper arm to help it along by pulling on it at every return stroke.

Eventually, I noticed that the dead space was getting larger, and 120 miles later, the wiper motor finally and permanently perished, refusing to move at all.

Luckily, I was near my in-laws, so whilst the recovery driver came, my father in law arrived to take me to my destination. Herman got loaded up and is heading back for home in Cornwall - I'll deal with that once I've recovered from surgery, MrsH will be home to receive it.

Typically, whilst we were waiting for the recovery driver, the rain stopped, the sun began to shine and the road dried out. Fucking typical.

So, my first FTP in Herman after four years. Not bad going. 64cd60dddb38c2a5ba3136d49147906a.jpgdd9bd5a30b2a4ed5f6ae372fdda94019.jpg77a8ba09a17ce324865db586a86a382a.jpg

WHY?!

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY.

This car has just been fucking bad luck from day one. Dented on the offside while parked, suspension knackered by a pothole & now this happens while I'm working a 16 hour day in a shithole that I hate. No note, nothing. It's opened the side of the car up like a tin can - i'm guessing a lorry.

This fucking stupid car owes me £3k with all the shit I've had to do to it.

I've seen this argument hundreds of times on FB & those with actual plans of Hood etc prove her armour was up to scratch and equal to a BB, it was a poorly placed ready use ammo store that caught the unlucky shell & went up according to them. Battlecruiser was something the Admiralty came up with for any battleship that did over 23knots, Hood did about 32knots.

Jutland was a different thing & a different war.

Oh that's just fucking shit mate. DO NOT LIKE.

Any CCTV nearby ?

Posted

I can't actually believe it.

No CCTV - parked all day on a quiet main road through a village. Plenty of other cars parked in the same (marked) bays - but no other cars damaged (I was parked from 5:15am through to 8:15 this evening)

What about nearby houses - someone may have footage ?

Have you reported it to the rozzers (FWIW) ?

Yeah, the lack of note in a situation like that is just rubbish :-(

I have to go back there tomorrow, so I'll be checking and door knocking. I can't see that the police will be able to do much, and as a youngish driver I can't imagine the insurance / police route is going to be any less costly than just replacing it with some other shite.

Posted

I'd deffo get a crime ref number at the very least and you can decide whether to go down the insurance route later, once you've done some door knocking.

Bloody hell, that's shit mate! Some utter twat knows he's done that and scarpered anyway. There is one word for people like that and it is subject to a yearly prize!

Same sort of cunt that knocked over my 3 week old sv650 and fucked off leaving it on its side

That is absolutely fucking awful.

I can't believe someone would do that much damage and just drive off without a second thought. People like that just shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of anything motorized.

God I hope someone’s got CCTV I really do

Liked for the lovely bit of rope you just happened to have with you.

I've seen one of these ropes stop a LOT of turning momentum dead - talking two tonnes of weight with a shit load of torque behind it, and it just shrugged it off.

Figured it'd make a perfect tow rope!

That looks like the back end of a wagon has caught it while turning left, are there any turnings/openings opposite they could have gone into?

That Volvo is mind boggling, thought it was just a deep ripple, not a fucking hole! Not even like it's an easy to replace panel either. Hope by some stroke of luck that you find the arsehole responsible.

Aside from that, good morning from a hospital bed, I slept terribly and I now have the dubious honour of going first this morning for surgery. Getting my upper jaw re-positioned, which means my three month old son and I will probably end up working through soft foods together in the near future.

Absolutely shitting my pants, but I'm a massive Jessie with this kind of thing.

I appear to have put on my Cavcraft hat and today gave money for this pile of shit.

attachicon.gifIMG_20180501_165634.jpg

Anyone want any parts before I bridge it?

Now sold the radio and the car for a tidy profit.

Holy shit - the way that panel has opened up is mental.

It looks very similar to the damage my van has.

I reckon a tractor did that damage, a truck would have dented it more

Bit of angle iron hanging off a trailer/pickup?

Been caught at speed rather than pushed, lighter and fast rather than heavy and slow.

This.

My colleague had her car hit a fortnight ago.  By door knocking we worked out who had a delivery in the 15 minute window where the incident could have happened, and pinpointed the delivery company and driver within a day.

It happens a lot on our trading estate.  Insufficient parking so people just abandon cars, we also have lorries coming morning/noon/night.  A lorry sideswiped someone the other day and didn't stop.  Although he did stop, because the car in front of him whilst he tried to leave witnessed the whole thing, and just stopped in the road - preventing the driver from leaving the scene.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned here that the head gasket had gone on the Morris. Well it hadn't gone at all, when I pulled the head off it was still there.

If eBay writes to ask 'how do you like your head gasket?' I shall be saying 'not very fucking much'.

post-7547-0-40092500-1525335539_thumb.jpgpost-7547-0-98205000-1525335583_thumb.jpg

When I first reported the problem I said that the gasket was a copper type, but now it can be seen that I was lying. This time I really have used the copper one though.

According to various forums you should torque down the head bolts dry, one bloke saying he only goes to 40ft lbs instead of 46-50 the books say.

Maybe my crime here is that because I re-torqued the head after a short run I squashed the composite gasket too much.

With this one I will wait 500 miles before a second tightening.

PS, head is still nice and flat.

I'm not able to send/receive messages from my phone, and I know you'll definitely check this before your emails; but I hope everything goes well. Send me an email when you're awake and stuff.

Sorry to see that mess made of the Volvo.

That's what I was thinking. These Dhollandia tailifts are good for a gouge at a certain height because of tail-swing. (Other things hanging off the rear corners of HGV trailers are available)

taillift-retractable-stowed.jpg

If an artic is turning either way, the opposite rear disappears from the mirrors immediately

Tail-swing-definition-and-measurement.pn

And if the driver just makes glancing contact, they won't feel a thing and they won't hear a thing 50ft ahead with Hard Rawk FM turned up to 11.

Poor Volvo. I hope you can find out a bit more how it happened.
