Rob was going to look at that bargain Pug 304 cab last Sunday, seller very unresponsive, turned out he had already sold it before Rob could see it. No dice.

 

Then, I was going after a Dacia 1310 on Romanian plates in Dover, seller didn't respond quickly, responds today - sold. No dice.

 

I'm now on to a 3 door 323 auto (you know, the rare shape) with no MOT and a broken exhaust that seller wants too much for.

 

Then there was the £200 Favorit in Wrexham that was right at the wrong time for DW, I believe might still be for sale (See Facebook group Skoda Favorit UK).

Sad news for DollyWobbler, a pantograph wiper has gone downbird.

 

On the way to Guildford for my jaw surgery in Herman, and 30 miles into the 270 mile journey, the wipers just stopped dead in the pissing rain with no warning.

 

Having blindly navigated to the verge, I concluded that there were some stripped teeth in the motor and jury-rigged a tow rope to the wiper arm to help it along by pulling on it at every return stroke.

 

Eventually, I noticed that the dead space was getting larger, and 120 miles later, the wiper motor finally and permanently perished, refusing to move at all.

 

Luckily, I was near my in-laws, so whilst the recovery driver came, my father in law arrived to take me to my destination. Herman got loaded up and is heading back for home in Cornwall - I'll deal with that once I've recovered from surgery, MrsH will be home to receive it.

 

Typically, whilst we were waiting for the recovery driver, the rain stopped, the sun began to shine and the road dried out. Fucking typical.

 

So, my first FTP in Herman after four years. Not bad going.

I believe she had an armour scheme as strong as Revenge class BBs, but a previous refit had put a 4" or 5" ammo locker above the main belt & that's what the shell touched off, that explosion was too much for the belt etc etc.

 

She was fast because of massive engines, about 130,000shp compared to 90,000shp in Nelson.

She should never have been put in that position. As a Battlecruiser she was light and fast but against a Battleship she couldn’t have taken many hits. It’s like putting Amir Khan against Mike Tyson, all the speed and agility means nothing if the other guy gets a good hit in early. The Prince of Wales with its better armour should have led the charge as that could have taken a punch.

 

Admiral Jackie Fisher conceived the Batlecruiser idea, the aim being to hit first, hit hard, and get away quickly. A good idea, but flawed in practice as the sailors in Hood, Queen Mary, Invincible, and Indefatigable found to their ultimate cost.

 

Poor working practices could have been a factor. It was common for anti-flash doors to be left open in the turrets to enable faster gun loading. A small fire up top could easily spread straight down into the magazine storage and with all that cordite stacked up....well.....

 

Interestingly there was a programme on BBC4 earlier this week about the Battle of Jutland and they tested the effect of a small fire above a scale model of a magazine. The words whoosh and kablam spring to mind

This car has just been fucking bad luck from day one. Dented on the offside while parked, suspension knackered by a pothole & now this happens while I'm working a 16 hour day in a shithole that I hate. No note, nothing. It's opened the side of the car up like a tin can - i'm guessing a lorry.

 

This fucking stupid car owes me £3k with all the shit I've had to do to it.

I've seen this argument hundreds of times on FB & those with actual plans of Hood etc prove her armour was up to scratch and equal to a BB, it was a poorly placed ready use ammo store that caught the unlucky shell & went up according to them. Battlecruiser was something the Admiralty came up with for any battleship that did over 23knots, Hood did about 32knots.

 

Jutland was a different thing & a different war.

No CCTV - parked all day on a quiet main road through a village. Plenty of other cars parked in the same (marked) bays - but no other cars damaged (I was parked from 5:15am through to 8:15 this evening)

I have to go back there tomorrow, so I'll be checking and door knocking. I can't see that the police will be able to do much, and as a youngish driver I can't imagine the insurance / police route is going to be any less costly than just replacing it with some other shite.

I've seen one of these ropes stop a LOT of turning momentum dead - talking two tonnes of weight with a shit load of torque behind it, and it just shrugged it off.

 

Figured it'd make a perfect tow rope!

That Volvo is mind boggling, thought it was just a deep ripple, not a fucking hole! Not even like it's an easy to replace panel either. Hope by some stroke of luck that you find the arsehole responsible.

 

Aside from that, good morning from a hospital bed, I slept terribly and I now have the dubious honour of going first this morning for surgery. Getting my upper jaw re-positioned, which means my three month old son and I will probably end up working through soft foods together in the near future.

 

Absolutely shitting my pants, but I'm a massive Jessie with this kind of thing.
