I'm up and down like an inflatable brothel at the moment, on the one hand I am still getting nothing but a kicking from the insurer involved in the Volvo's demise, I have sent all my documentation to the insurance ombudsman as I have had enough of that pack of cunts.

On the up side, a Vw Transporter I asked about over a year ago looks like it will soon be available, so hopefully I can get the Audi a new mot and send it on it's way.

Going to see it next weekend :o

I finally won the war I've been fighting against this seized bleed nipple for the last 3 years.
I filed it down and hammered a big m12 nut onto it then welded that to the bleed nipple. That did it.

I bought this weird penis pump device to change the gearbox oil on the cortina. When I checked it the oil was minty fresh but 1/4 of a litre down so I topped it up

using this. It then immediately came in handy again bleeding the brakes. I just stuck it on the bleed nipple and pulled the pump and it drew threw fluid until all the air bubbles had gone. Good result, it only cost about 4 quid on amazon. I now have slightly less shit brakes.

I'm using the jack-and-a-block-of-wood technique to realign the doors on the Princess and encountered my first problem when the jack decided to disappear inside the driver's door.  The skin has rotted out right where it folds over the frame and it's taken some of the frame with it.  Just as well I've got spare doors I suppose.

I've got one of those, never thought to use that for bleeding brakes. Thats a brilliant idea. The MR2 needs done, will give it a shot.

I had to put a smaller hose inside the big hose it came with so it fitted over the bleed nipple but it worked a treat.

Bye bye Civic. I felt genuinely sad putting it away. Felt like the feeling you get when you put a pet away in a cattery/kennel/etc before you go on holiday. :(

Hello MGB! :)

Fears of finding it as a rusted pile of metal from putting it away wet was unfounded. Definitely has done it a lot of good being out of the elements.

Started first time with a little bit of fiddling with choke and throttle. Definitely runs way, way better now it's 17C outside.

MOT is in 9 days, so need to get it booked in asap. Or wait another 5 weeks for the exemption to kick in and then feel less stressed about having an MOT done. Biggest fear is that my breakdown cover doesn't cover when not exempt and no MOT.

I've had a very pleasant day out and about today. I caught up (too briefly) with six_cylinder, Mrs6C and Skattrd and I also answered the age old question 'can you fit a washing machine in a Citroen AX?'

post-13750-0-77912000-1523733816_thumb.jpg

I've clocked up a couple of hundred miles in my 1.0 AX and it's been ace.

And to cap the day off, on my way home a short while ago I found myself in an AX convoy with a J reg white 3 door.

post-13750-0-15881200-1523733984_thumb.jpg

Jerzy Woking was telling me recently about three AXs he had seen outside a house in London. Or Essex. Or somewhere.

A guy from work was flashing and beeping at an AX the other day before he realised it wasn't one of mine.

THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.

And I want them all.

There's probably about 4 or so local to me right now.

I've been using my AX as an emergency house move car and so far it's been amazingly good.

Let's bring up Audi wankers again. I know, I know. Bare with me!

You know how sometimes in a queue of cars, you see certain cars wait for a couple of car length gaps to be created first and then accelerate sharply to close that gap? Yeah it's annoying that.

Well I think I have an explanation ... from personal experience.

Turns out DSG boxes of this era have a problem. When the gearbag gets warmer for whatever reason the clutch actuation system goes doohickey. So instead of slipping the clutch when taking off from a standstill, it performs bunny hops like a first lesson learner driver.

It's often something in the Mechantronics unit - box of tricks that converts all the electrical signals into stuff that makes the box do stuff. Sometimes it can be worn out clutch packs. If you're lucky it maybe fixed by resetting the gearbox computer and/or changing the box fluids+filter.

New mechantronic unit is £1.5k + labour. Clutch pack ~£600 + labour (gearbox out). There is a company locally here that can refurb the mechantronic unit, replace the clutch pack, fluid+filter and coding for £1700.

Not sure I can stomach spending that. Getting a bit of buyers remorse now.

It's most noticeable when driving with low revs when pulling off or letting it creep along. Instead of spending £k you can drive around it by accelerating harder to minimise the clutch slipping. Reversing is trickier. As it's pulsing the clutch in and out at a predicable frequency, you can brake at the right time. So essentially let it start reversing, then dab the brake to slow it down.

TL;DR, VAG know their target market and make their cars drive fail like it for you.

funnily enought the allegedly "inferior" single clutch Hunda i-shift doesn't do that!

To be fair, the DSG system doesn't do it when working correctly. Which possibly could not be all that often once they get to a certain age...

It's not the flywheel? / You know what a flywheel failing can sound like?

Nope flywheel is fine i believe it's been changed before

Dr Google sugests injector loom? Dont want to throw 90 quid at the wrong part!! I've not got vagcom or no anyone with it

This is only going to end well*...

Meanwhile, dans le monde Citroën, the mystery of the disappearing gearbox fluid continues......It's swallowed another half-litre of Dexron III, plus half a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix fluid. The dipstick still looks dry when the gearbox is warm. Where the hell is it all going!???

Spent my evening underneath my dash of the civic. Mrs comes to me saying the car only blows warm air?!

She may of told me months ago tbh when she borrowed it! Because cold i wasn't arsed! Cracking the flags today tho and could do with the air con!

What a bloody job working on my back with only my fingers and a torch!

All fixed with only a tiny bodge!

Bleeding the brakes on the Honda didn't do too much but it is a bit more responsive now.

Next thing I'm going to do is swap the wheels round front to rear and see if it makes a difference. I'm starting to think someone's not balanced the wheels properly as it's had recent tyres (Evergreens) and there's evidence of a load of adhesive wheel weights being removed. There are a couple of weights on the edge of the rims too but I'm not sure how old they are.

RIP sweet prince Inca, you were good to me.

I made a low bid on something very boring that I didn't really want. 226348315e6f1332a5a163c8c026e107.jpg7efeb23b6f3000b4a360de8a17135bab.jpg

Just thank your stars it's not a C-matic nomming litres of Total T fluid.

Has it got a gearbox oil cooler that is it part of the main rad? I know on some cars that can breakdown inside & leak between them into either the engine oil or the coolant.

....which is still expensively available from Chevronics, etc.

The HBOL reckons not, or at least doesn't mention the existence of one.

Just to confirm, there's a trace of fluid on the dipstick (at all of the marked levels, and it looks clear-coloured rather than the Dexron's red) when the gearbox is stone cold. But when the engine and gearbox are warm, the dipstick appears "dry". That suggests to me that it's all going somewhere, but exactly where it's going is a mystery. The fluid tell-tale trace should be staying on the dipstick. And there's still no trace of a pool on the ground.

I'm inclined to pour in even more Dexron III, but that means I'll probably overfill the gearbox, which is not good either.

Every autobox I've known should be checked with the engine running, which suggests to me that once all the fluid flywheel etc are full of fluid the level gets lower. Parked up it'd drain back & increase the level on the dipstick.

That makes sense. I ran the thing for about a minute, as recommended, and saw that the fluid was already disappearing. Still think it shouldn't run dry when warmed up. I'll give it another go tomorrow to make sure I'm not going mad.

Reason I'm going a bit paranoid about fluid levels is because I notice that the gearbox slips (and the engine revs go up) at about 2000rpm, rather like a Variomatic that's got loose bands.

piece of shit black mini still has no brakes.

in desperation we have deposited it at a local garage. and they have had no more luck at getting a working brake pedal than we had.

its sat beached on their ramps now for the better part of a week, and is no where nearer working than when i took it down. and more importantly it seems that i don't like driving it.

i couldn't put my fingure on it, could it be the thin backed, and fixed seat, or the bloody din from it, or could it be the fact that when on th eroad it felt proper gormless. i'm used to the MPi tramlining like mad, but the black mini seemed to wander about like a drunken cow......

now it could be that is down to the enormous standatd steering wheel, or the narrow, and tiny little wheels, or it could be down to me been i a proper strop with the little shit box, but the overall driving experience wasn't much fun.

so i'm now thinking of cutting my losses and get the little fucker sold. but i don't want to be dealing with tossers on fleabay or scumtree, so instead i'm thinking of sending it over the block in auction. a local firm does indeed regularly sell "classics" by auction, so i'm minded to take the inevitable haircut over it, and just get rid.

or burn it, with fire, both solutions work for me.

the orange mini now has new steadybar bushes, though it now has a rattle from we think the clutch thrust bearing, so i'm guessing sooner or later that little twat will need a clutch.

i fuckin' HATE old shit bag cars!

When I built a kit car many years ago I put the calipers back on the wrong sides which meant the bleed nipple was below the input pipe, impossible to bleed, took ages to figure it out...

Is that all they suggest? The ones I've had needed to be warm/cycled through the gears with a set time in each gear etc.

Hmmmm, no change having moved some wheels around.

Old Man has produced a lower balljoint from his old 5th gen Prelude that he never fitted for some reason, so this afternoon I'm going to see if that's failed. It's about all that could possibly be causing it to track badly.

Didn't you say it has a broken spring? that'd cause poor tracking and much oddness.
