Well, let's have a look at Mr. Warrender's aptly-registered MkVI....

Surely not a case of a man with 2 Bentleys and a Royce thinking he is better than somebody with a 100E Prefect or something?

No, of course not.   He's a politician for God's sake.  Man of the people.

DfT data. There are some extracts pertinent to your question in the impact assessment: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/roadworthiness-testing-for-vehicles-of-historic-interest

197000 exempt now, further 297000 will be included in new legislation. That's a lot more than I thought

Some interesting stats in that report, excellent Googling Mr Honda!

Posted

Not all Googling, just searching the Gov.uk site because that's where to find it. There's DfT spreadsheets somewhere that have full details, such as the vehicles licenced one that is the raw data that the front-end HML uses. There's another spreadsheet on MOT tests too that shows what does/doesn't pass stats.

I've posted similar numbers before, but how many of them are SORN'd at any one time?

Posted

My cortina keeps running up to about 3/4 on the temp gauge . I’ve previously changed the stat and and the sender I suspect the it’s gunked up so I’ve ordered some coolant flush shite buy it probably need a new radiator . Also the starter is lazy and the cheapest one on eBay is 90 quid !

I think I’ll get the mot out the way first

Posted

Possibly . The last time i tried to get a starter rebuilt it was going to cost more than an a new one all be it an eBay chineseium one .

Don't forget that a good number of the cars on the DVLA database will never see the road again.  Judging by what is irritating shitters on the ebay thread quite a few are just a chassis plate and logbook.

The Volvo is pretty good at allowing flora to germinate in its roof drainage channels if it isn't washed regularly during the winter months. I wonder what the seedling would have grown into if I'd left it?

That looks like the type of spreading weed you get on lawns. Some sort of clover or celandine?

You've got to ask yourself, would you buy a 1953 Ford Prefect with no heater, vacuum wipers and engines that were fucked after 40,000 miles to avoid paying £50 a year for an MOT.

"..The bigger danger is people with modern cars with no licence, no insurance and over the drug drive limit.

Surrey road cops twitter feed is full of them-they’ve not pulled over a classic yet.."

..... wait till some baggie trader catches an episode of Morse 'oof, cool innit' and smokes about in a Classic Aul Jaag ;)

Someone on here said it only takes one old smoker to be pulled 'MOT exempt crock hauled in'/DailyFlail...

I'm pretty certain that it was one of these:

I'm not sure what sort of plant it is, but it grows in the alleyway which leads to my courtyard and has defied all of my efforts to get rid of it from there, which is annoying as its seeds are very fertile, spread far and wide and will germinate anywhere where there's dirt or damp, even brick walls and cars. When it's fully grown, it has woody stems and the underside of the leaves are sticky.

Wonder if things would grow better in a Kia Cee'd

No, but you could well buy a late 70's car, something like a Citroen CX, which has a heater (of sorts), proper wiper(s) and engines that are perfectly capable, and use it as a daily without needing an MOT.

In a few years time you'd be able to do that with a MK2 Cavalier or a Sierra, which are both "fairly modern" cars in my eyes.

A local classic car sales place who I know quite well summed up what should have happened... rather than scrapping the MOT for over 40's, it could have been a watered down version.. a basic and fairly quick check that would cover

*rampant rot

*most of the lights work

*tyres aren't bald

*visual smoke test

*wheels aren't falling off

*suspension isn't completely collapsed

*brakes work

That could have been a 20-minute-type test, which had fairly liberal criteria for a pass, but nevertheless still a test to ensure that a car isn't completely falling to bits.

That would have been faaaar too sensible.

I once had a small tree growing in the mud around the bottom of the windscreen/top of the wing on my disco. It was quite happily up to about 2" when some bastard pulled it out. I was planning on keeping it for as long as possible, I think a 4-6" bonsai would have been quite possible in that location.

Obtained another car DAB radio adaptor, this time for The Volvo:

It cost half as much as The Aero's one (due to heavy Amazon discounting), but seems even more suited for purpose, as it has an aerial socket, an AUX-IN socket and a micro SD card slot, for even more musical possibilties  :)

I’ve had the most spectacular gastroenteritis over the last 48 hours. Holy...Moly.

My only real company has been Keeping up Appearances On Demand. I do like a nice gentle laugh as I’m chucking up from both ends.

I know the demise of the SD3 is of no surprise to anyone, but I genuinely haven’t seen one on the road in a decade. What’s worse, it’s nearly impossible to buy one (good or bad)

I know there was one floating about on here last year, but it’s probably time one entered the AS preservation scheme. I can really foresee them being all gone very soon.

I've got a day out driving the firms van tomorrow.......a new sprinter with auto box.

I've only driven it home tonight and already I'm getting in the swing of things..........had to open the window and call a car driver a cock when he failed to stop for load of parked cars on his side despite having clearly seen me coming. He then had to get himself in a tight gap to let me through. Not happy

It's a nice thing to steer though........goes pretty well too

Sorry, only just seen this thread....Right, Oceanography Centre.

As Stanky suggests come in on M27, M271 and stay inside lane.   You will then turn left at the end of the M271, onto A35 for the route above.

If you are coming from the east of Southampton there is an alternative to leave M27 at J8 on to the A3024 (don't go near the Itchen Toll Bridge - follow City Centre go over Northam Bridge and turn left after leaving the bridge - this takes you into Millbank Street and will connect to the Eastern Docks.

Thirdly you could come down the M27, A33 and into the northern end of Southampton via The Avenue and follow Eastern Dock signage

None of these are particularly pleasant at rush hour but I agree with Stanky that M271 route will be least likely to have actually stopped....

Just been down to Southampton and back. Thanks for the local traffic advice it was trouble free and I only stopped a couple of times at red lights. An hour and 5mins door to door each way. Arrived on the docks at 7.20 am and arrived back home a time 19.10. Southampton driving was fine, but there were some right idiots on the m3- driving on main beam, or not lights at all apart from drl, outer land hoggers with nothing in the middle lane. Etc. Glad I don’t have to commute too much !

Something viral I think, as two of the four offspring are currently talking to God on the big white telephone.  Joy.
