I find modern batteries go off very quickly, particularly the Halfords branded Yuasa efforts.

I finished work early yesterday so rewarded myself with a rare bit of tinkering time.

Aim - fix the sagging, blowy exhaust.

Result - the central locking and heated rear window don't work anymore and the exhaust is still the same.

Ace.

That's ok. I topped the screenwash up on the Lexus and now the alternator doesn't work.

Took the Merc home lastnight to find it has no dash lights.

Pulled the clocks forward and worked in the dash.Found a blown bulb in a tiny bulb holder just hanging there.Changed the bulb and nothing.....Turns out it's the bulb that illuminates when you've got a bulb out...pffft.

The dash bulbs are not capless they come in their own plastic holder. The one I took out has a broken wire and I don't have any of those type.Gonna have to use a torch tonight.

Gave the Honda another wash, as I'm doing a photoshoot on my way to Birmingham tomorrow.

Of course, it'll be absolutely filthy before I've even got anywhere near the M54, but I had to do my best.

A diagnostic or just a plug in and read the codes - there is a world of difference

Volvo's glovebox is stuck shut. It's not locked, the lock works and I've got a key for it. It's moving about a bit like it's not quite on the catch properly but is solidly shut. Turning the lock knob thing doesn't do anything.

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions?

Oxyacetylene in via the bulkhead so you don't damage the dash...

Mazda 3 passed it's mot but still has rough running and cuts out from time to time. I'm ready to bail on it or get it baled.

I have begun preliminary enquiries about a localish traction avant for sale. It's been for sale for months but has just dropped another £2k bringing it in budget. Typically I can do nothing this weekend as I am in the Lake District on holiday and my mechanic friend is on the club stand at the NEC. The guy is around the following weekend though so I plan to visit Southwark then- wherever that is.

Turns out it's actually Stratford. East larndan!

It doesn't have an EGR valve does it?

I've been living vicariously through my friend Pete for years - he had three at one time plus the SM and 2cvs and BXs. I am hopeful this one will be ok- I've missed out on three others in the last year. Of course I have nowhere to keep it unless the 2cv goes!

Oh and the other thing to go would be those awful numberplates.

Speaking of number plates, has anyone got any recommendations for black and white/silver number plates? Both style (metal/plastic/raised/etc) and where to get them from.

I really want to put a set on the MGB, firstly because it's eligible for them and secondly I've never owned a car with them.

There's a company always at beaulieu, but I can't remember the name. Give me a minute!

On Monday, I had the Safrane booked in for an MOT, just to see if there were any horrors lurking on it.

I shouldn't have worried.

So I have been using this as a daily barge for getting to and from work for the last few days.

Impressions are very good. The seats are extremely comfortable and the cabin is light and airy compared to the 75. I have also started to enjoy having an automatic gearbox. Sure, it may not be as responsive as I would like it to be, and it will most likely need a fluid change soon (if anyone knows how to do this on a Safrane, please let me know), but it is so relaxing.

I have also enjoyed seeing the puzzled looks on the faces of people in traffic as they try to figure out what on earth it is that I am driving. Overall I would definitely say that I am enjoying the ownership of the Safrane so far.
