You'll have to tell me what you think of that GB when you get to it.  I've got another ten bottles here, but I bottled these ones too late and they're all flat and not so tasty.

Cheers for hanging around in the cold for so long!

Maybe, just maybe, the pump should be on the top of the bottle so when the seal fails the washer bottle doesn't empty into the boot?

The pump is at the bottom of the reservoir because that is where the water is.

Why is the reservoir in the boot?

So any leak can cause the maximum damage.

The russians have the right idea.

My old Niva washer bottle had the pump built into the lid with a long tube that went to the bottom to reach the water.

Also means you can change a dud pump in seconds without getting 5 litres of stinky water up your sleeve/in your boot.

That's how the Rover's pump is set up too. And nearly all of my cars, come to mention it. I don't understand why you'd do it any other way.

Mrs Foad has been offered a free car from one of the bus mechanics at her work, he didn't state which car it was other than it's a volvo estate so she asked the mechanic if it was like a 940 like she has and he replied: no, it's silver... it's also AWD so any guesses for what it could be? I'm going along tonight for a look...

V70 AWD?

Been to see the garage today and the fire damage on the Xantia isn't too bad. They reckon the missfire filled the exhaust with unburnt fuel which ignited in the hot back box and spread but the damage seems to be contained to the bit of boot floor in the pics. Given what's up with it and the fact it needs some hydraulic bits overhauling and some other bits I'm not really sure what to do about it though as it's very solid and everything works. Suggestions?

The sensible money would have to be on anXC70 / V70 Cross Country or whatever they were called before XC70, as SiC suggests.

Less parts, cheaper to produce.

I went to look at a car tonight, the seller stubbornly told me that she had put a new set of tyres on a couple of months ago - there was no more than 2mm tread on them. Rather oddly, it was advertised as having 110,000 miles but turned out to have 125,000 on the clock.

No suprise, i came home empty handed.

Cracking colour! I thought every single one of these was silver. Or possibly grey. Can't be bad.

Ugh. Lovely and sunny, so I went to dig the pressure washer out, given most of the fleet is covered in filthy, salty muck (2CV included). Discover the outside tap is frozen solid. Yes, apparently it is that cold outside! My temp gauge reckons bang on zero. At 2pm in the afternoon!

The 2CV will remain mucky.

Well I bought the golf home tonight.

Its very smooth, very quiet but feels very disconnected from the road... Steering is too light, there's no ambient noises and the windows feel tiny. Goes some if you mash the pedal all the way down though, we ragged the absolute tits off it through Northampton between the m1 and the m40, red line through many gears up to cough speeds, and it was still saying 50mpg average.

The radar cruise is very odd though, takes a good while to trust it at all, but once the trust is there it's still odd. Have it set, but the speed is lower than the max, and following a car. Pull out into an empty lane and it thinks for a few seconds then takes off. Likewise if your following someone who moves over, your sat there like a div doing 55 for a second or two, then whoosh off you go to 90. It also hates being in 6th at 35mph (the boss drive, who has driven an auto for the past 2 years, a column shift auto as well, so as we pull out of the work car park he nearly rips the indicator stalk off as that's where his shifter is in the crv...

I had a brief play with the radar stuff but turned it all off, put the driving mode into eco and found Planet Rock on the dab, which sounded shit compared to radio 1 on fm. I'll drive it back in tomorrow and be great fun that I've had a play (hopefully it'll be quieter in the morning and I can have some fun, got 75 miles of fuel to use to get it back to where it was) but I can't wait to sink back into the xantia!

It also took me ages to find reverse to park up at home, oh and the auto handbrake is a cock as I'm used to just lifting the clutch in the xantia and away it goes, but throttle is needed to release the handbrake. It tried stop start on me too, but I held it on the clutch, wasn't fancying learning that in rush hour traffic on the way home!

I went to the pub last night. The nearest pub is only about 1 mile away.

It took 1/2 hour to get there.

Here is the transport (Required as we have to cross the TRENT)

Yep, Golfs are pretty average these days, many other similar makes have the same kind of technology. I much prefer the new range of Hyundai.

Saw one of these boats sinking in Norfolk, there was all manner of rescue vehicles there. Hopefully it got saved. In the summer, I like walking along the local rivers and seeing these boats.

So any leak can cause the maximum damage.

Shouldn't there be a rusty hole in the corner of the boot floor so that the fluid drains harmlessly onto the ground?

I'm sure all mine had that feature :)

even though in those days they could still fit the washer bottle under the bonnet...

As said last night, if you have lost confidence in it then move on but whoever gets this will not have too much work on their hands.

I went on the internet, and I found this.

James May is curiously charming, Julia Bradbury is alluring but check out the shite in the background! Lorks!

I didn't know he was in old TG. He wasn't in the first series of new TG though was he?

Indeed not. They got Jason Dawe in. Then realised their mistake.

Whatever happened to him?

Last seen presenting some awful programme called Used Car Roadshow or something. In fact, they were recording an episode at the first Retro Rides Gathering 2007 as I recall. Which was strange.

Who was the guy who presented deals on wheels with Mike Brewer? I always thought he was good and probably the better presenter of the two.

Surely if it's a hire car then it's drain the tank then refill with cherry?

Former C&sc journo Richard Sutton. Last I heard he was one of the Goodwood supremos
