Makes me think of this picture from the previous page, that I wonder if the owner of this house said to their neighbour?

I hope not, but I have several cars sitting in a public lay-by so it can't be any worse off!

Billy, how the fuck did you get a MK2 Cav on your 'best price mate no more than £20' ethos ?

Keep it in the family, may as well fill the father in law`s holes too......

I did a similar amount of welding on my mother`s Almera and think it shall be a recurring theme. Check behind the rear wheels too. Not an MoT failure as yet but I bet you it`s crusty

The TL:DR version? Alternator belt shenanigans add 2 + hours to tonight's commute home - fuggin' wars, man. For more details, read on...

Me, 100 miles from home in the Pug 106 diesel, M42 close to where it turns into the A42: "What's that noise? It sounds like a bag or summat on the front." Cut a long story short, the alternator multi-vee belt had started fraying and was hitting stuff, so was down to 2 vees out of 5. I do recall thinking previously that IU sould change it to a new belt as it was only on 3 vees, but hadn't got around to it so only myself to blame really.

I got it to the car park of the McDonald's at the services near there, then went looking for the replacement belt I'd bought - but couldn't find it!! So I went for a McPiss with lies, then checked how far away the nearest Halfrauds was - 10 or so miles - and looking at the time (7:35) I began looked again for the spare belt. Luckily I found it, so after jacking the car up and stucking it onto an axle stand to give me enough room to get under it, I then had to find something the correct size to undo the allen bolts of the adjuster...I cant' remember the last few PSA cars having allen bolts here, but none the less... I swapped it over to a new belt : once back on the deck and everything packed away, it promptly threw the belt off. Arse! Probably too tight, as the tensioner idler has no lip. I re-fitted it but didn't overtighten it this time - all seemed good, it took load and revs no bother.

Off the jacks/axle stand, back on the deck, let's go - then just as I got into the one-way system, the red charge light came on. Bastards! Out onto the roundabout over the M42, and somewhere there i thought I felt it shed the belt completely, then back to the services - yep, no signs of a belt...

So I disconnected the passenger headlight, and headed out onto the road to:

A ) pick up the belt, and

B ) get a bit more towards home before I needed to call the RAC.

Twice around the roundabout, but no sign of the belt - ho hum, it must have jumped into the undergrowth.

Off up the road on one headlight, and no stereo. Then I thought, the old belt was still on despite being quite fucked, perhaps it'll help get me home? So, next stop, M1 Trowell -at least there there's enough gradient to get me bump-started if nowt else.

Back under the car, I find a the replacement belt, hanging across the crank pulley - but with a split in it, with 2 of the 5 Vees on one side and 3 Vees on the other! Ok, let's try just 3 Vees and split the belt - it was fitted to be as close as possible to the inside of both the crank and the alternator pulleys.

Started it up loose, and it seemed to work ok, then switched off, tensioned it up, and re-started - it was working fine! I looked undr the bonnet and it revealed why it had spat it off twice, and had the big split between the 5 vees - it was on the inner 3 vees on the crank pulley, and the outer 3 on the alternator.

It got me home, and that's how it's staying for the moment...but to quote Mr Bo110x, fuggin' wars, man...post-3066-0-61932600-1479517040_thumb.jpg

Decided that it was time to change the oil on my Golf. Just regular servicing, according to the service history the oil was last changed 3500 miles and 18 months ago, which is way too long.

Anyway, drained the oil out and it was piss thin. Really stupidly thin, took the filter off and the paper filter element had collapsed. Which isn't ideal.

Anyway, engine is now much happier. It was silky smooth anyway but now it feels more responsive, quieter and better on fuel.

Just shows. Old oil is shit oil. I'll have to give it another change in a couple of months just to give it a chance of cleaning up in there.

I went to park in Nantwich town centre yesterday and many of the spaces were taken by travellers with their traditional Romany style caravans. A good number of other bays were filled with scrap metal, shit, and other trappings of their picturesque nomadic lifestyle.

When my old man went over the time on his ticket by half an hour he copped a nice fine but the warden/police have come over all myopic and failed to notice this lot.

I was watching one of those lorries scooping up some poor bugger's car in Cockneyland last week because he'd parked in a residents zone; even though he was carrying out work for the street and had arrived to move the vehicle before it hit the lorry deck his pleas were ignored and 3 coppers soon appeared to shut him up. It's a fucking disgrace how this society shits on those who contribute and nurtures freeloading arseholes.

Is yours the 1.4 or 1.5 mcoli? I'm scrapping the one I acquired if you need anything.

Do i wanna lay on the floor?

A neighbour's almera was patched to death but failed its MOT on further galloping rot.

My wife suggested me having a look - I declined as the sills already looked like cammell laird had worked on them.

There's many updates on the little smart car I won from this place.

I'm a bit of an idiot (mostly) when it comes to Internet shenanigans and I wouldn't know how to post pics hence no thred.

I was having a chat to my 3 year old he was asking me why it was called buz.. just as I was pointing out the colour scheme of the car he said buz lightyear is grey! Sort of shut me up for the next hour as I called in a few favours.

Updates due soon

The leaking tyre on the Favorit was put down to a leaking valve, so now replaced and tyre re-sealed, hopefully £15 well spent to keep the air in.

Daytime photos of the merc's new paint- front wings down to metal and doors blended to match about halfway along. I can't see the join at any rate.

Been in That London for the last few days. Wife doesn't fly terribly well and trains were expensive so the 850 did sterling service of just a kick in the arse under 1000 miles in three days at a not disrespectful 31.9mpg considering it's a 2.5 auto and was four up plus luggage. It performed more or less faultlessly - the central locking now doesn't - and was a most comfortable and hassle free way to travel the motorway network.

That was just as well really... left Paddington at 7.30pm last night and arrived in Paisley at 4.55am. M6 and M74 was a complete ballache.

Following Mrs the Princesses hedge bound excursion yesterday we collected the Metro from the recovery yard this morning, no pictures at present but imagine a brown Metro with a bent front end.

We had to be there when that opened to get home in time to pick the dog up to go and collect the new Volvo 940.

So far it is OK, but in the first 35 miles we have found that the heater only does could air (because the matrix has been by passed) and it did a weird stall followed by the speedo going on strike.

Sod that. I've left Hemel Hempstead 7.00pm on a Friday night before and crossed the Kingston Bridge at midnight. One slash/fuel stop. Bit hairy doing up to 60mph through stationary traffic between J4 - J10 on the M6 though. Didn't have to negotiate any M74 roadworks though.

Aye, because motorcycle.

I've also done a Slough to Carlisle taking 13 hours (not exceeding 40mph because carb blockages - spent more time watching my ass than worrying what's ahead) in a Maxi.

Wycombe to Glasgow too in a Reliant Kitten with a female backseat passenger that had a full bottle of Buckie finished in less than an hour which was bought at 10am. It was a relief to drop them off in Larkhall. :)

Currently off to the land of Scotland. Stopping off at the lakes tonight and rest of the journey tomorrow to Edinburgh.

Taken 4.5hrs so far because accidents and roadworks. Another hour of journey left. Google reckoned 4hrs to lakes.

Weather is the same temperature in Bristol but it's far more grim up here. Even heaps of hail.

Mike has pulled the Rover into the unit to get the head off.  I can't help because Mike kindly gave me a cold so I could escape the drudgery of fixing my own car.  I think I'd rather the drudgery than the snot, phlegm, coughing and inability to regulate my own temperature.

Also been window shopping for seals on the Renault and scoping out what we can rob seals off.  Looks like a Laguna 2 boot seal is a near enough profile and certainly long enough to fit the 6 and since I don't give a toss about originality it should work just fine.  The extruded foam arrowhead door seals for the 6 work out at around £4 per metre, plus postage, so I need to measure just how much of that I need.  Thanks to those that provided links to companies that do seals, I should be able to get things at least marginally more watertight than at present for not too much outlay.

you probably know about it already but the M74 is closed near Glasgow this weekend, you may end up taking a scenic detour to Edinburgh - have a safe journey

Spent an exciting morning at a local builders merchants, very entertaining watching a dozen or so pissed up Bulgarians trying to load up a road going cement mixer by hand

Shovel loads of sand, cement getting flung around like confetti.......

We ended up with 60mtrs of 30x30mm box section, cut into 2mtr lengths

6 Osb boards at 8x4

And some cheap screws chucked in,all for £80........ £80!!

Board is being used as temporary flooring downstairs, steel is being used for fencing next week

I didn't! Until a friend sent me a link about an hour ago. :?

Possibly the worst time to go up...

Also the furthest north I've ever been!

If you are aiming for Edinburgh, follow the a7 from Carlisle- good road and some decent eateries along its length. Avoids the m74 entirely, and all the roads that will be gridlocked nearby
