Renault are a bugger for oddly sized nuts.  I have 16mm and 18mm sockets and spanners here that I haven't used since the Migraine departed and a broken 17mm spanner that I tried to file out to 18mm one Sunday afternoon.

Posted

16mm seems to be the standard hex size for M10 bolts in France.

Getting the hub carrier and brake disc off the 850 involved 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19mm, T45 and E14 sockets/spanners iirc.

Posted

I bought a 16mm spanner when I was taking the front calipers off the Volvo, which was about 5 years ago. I don't recall needing it again since. Although I'm pretty sure my current socket set has a 16 in it. No 18 though.

Posted

I used a 16 mm today on the 306 suspension strut , i think bmw are fond of 18mm

Posted

When I did some work on the front suspension of my VW Caddy I think 13, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 21mm sockets were involved. Ridiculous.

Posted

The mess our garage is in suggests that the A4 needed a similar amount of spanners and sockets to change a spring and a trailing arm.

Working on a 53 plate focusAuxiliary belt idler Pulley is knackered and as soon as I put a socket near the 10mm bolt it rounded, took hardly any effort so i assume they are made from toffee, tried a 10mm irwin bolt remover but it's just rounded it more and won't bite. I'm thinking of cutting/grinding the bolt head off, removing the pulley in the hope that there is thread all the way down the bolt so I can double nut it out. Access is crap due to engine mount and i don't want to start stripping it out if I can help it .Any more suggestions ??

This is probably why they were going to scrap it. ;)

Today, I replaced my first oxygen sensor.

Whether this has been successful or not is still uncertain. I may have to visit a man with a probe and a blue sign again.

Nay, nay sir it hadn't been touched, i'll win but'll have to pop the engine mount off to get some proper hammer swinging space :-D

You left the oil cap off the rover by the way you plant pot,it was on the rocker cover :-P

Yay! After a weekend running the golden slug without thermostat confirms all is not too shabby in the cooling department. (By the way, anyone know what temp a douvrin should run at?) now all I need to work out is which one of the three identical (identical looking but differing part number) thermostats I need to order.

Plus I think slug might be going russet brown in the near future. Because.

Got the 605 back off the film crew complete with fake cardboard Iraqi numberplates.

Showed the second unit how to start, release the handbrake on (and one wheel peel) an automatic Mercedes W124.

Spoke to Michael Portillo about Citroen GSs on Ipswich harbour front.

Saw wild deer on the way home.

Ate an entire box of Milk Tray.

This week has been odd.

That sounds fairly normal for you.

Out in the 75 today....

attachicon.gifimage.jpg

England's cliched green and pleasant bits, and Dartmoor national park.

One of the things I like about my job is that you get to see a lot of England's clichéd green and pleasant bits.

The week before I passed by Stonehenge, then drove through the beautiful Devon valleys on the A303/A30 on my way to Torquay (some of the names made me chortle like 'West Camel' / 'Indian Queens' / 'Minions' etc...) . Last week I drove from Barnsley along the A628 near Holmfirth to Stoke. The A628 route again was a beautiful run. I regret not stopping to take pictures but time was against me.

16mm and 21mm for BMW suspension as well, having spent most of yesterday doing rear bottom ball joints etc and subframe bushes on a E39 estate. Though the aftermarket parts are a more (usual to me) 17,19 and 22...

Up in Wrexham for the weekend and just back from a quick drive in the X1/9- sunny but not warm! Down to eccleston ( who put in speed cushions?!) in to Chester ( after the run event thing) back out to the post house roundabout and back down the bypass. First time I've driven it in six months! Unfortunately had the wrong shoes on so didn't go round the twisty mountain roads to Llangollen - not easy to change gear in boots!

Who uses 16mm bolts for crying out loud?

The bottom bolts in Mazda MX-5 rear shocks are 16 mm as well.

Had a massive fashion fail today.

Decided to use the Cortina for a trip out for lunch with the family. It was pointed out to me after I had picked everybody up that I resembled a Ford Cortina door card

It's in Preston though, so I'll be getting a flying tube on Saturday to go and collect it.

My p6 is with eBay now . I got a message from another p6 owners saying they had the same issue and how they got around it using a specific bleeding technique . Yes, I have to sacrifice a goat but it's got to be worth a try right?

I might have made the goat bit up

Well - not only did I survive I beat my much younger , fitter mate and another who bust his knee ( trying too hard!)

I don't reckon I could have done 3 hours non stop on the Ktm ( I did have to have a piss half way ) and the little honda is a trooper .

Roast at the outlaws later too - what a day !

I decided to add a giffer spec wheel cover to the LexBarge, because I felt the car needed more wood effect. (Despite the thing having 20 trees worth of real wood trim inside)

And it's too small to fit on the wheel...waste of £2 that was.

But fear not, it'll be on another car very soon!

jaguar has shat itself for the last time today.

yesterday  and again this morning, was running fine, as sound as a pound even! was using it this weekend to see if it could be trusted, say, to get me too and from work?

get to the FiL's park up, again fine. come back to it 20 minutes later to let them out, start it up, and it sounds like a cement mixer!!

think there is a problem with timing chains/tensioners cos the noise (a horrible deathly, metallic rattle) is coming from the front to the engine so fuck it, other half will call U-pull-it or Piggots and get them to come at take it away!!

this fleet reduction thing, it easy.....

Long minibus ride today for 12 days of adventurous activities in Rockland. The map is wrong, we're going near Ullapool so it's even further up.

Stuck in traffic at Birmingham, joy.

I was a little bit confused for a minute there, it wasn't clear straightaway that there were two people and I was trying to figure out how you kept your nails in such great shape while wearing those work gloves.  I think you might need more stickers too, there's some car that's still black :P
