I collected a car yesterday. The meet was arranged for after work so I decided to stay over. I booked the cheapest accomodation I could find. This turned out to be what seemed to be a Young Offender Institution just off the A14. It WAS cheap so its all good.  I dropped into Gaydon on the way back.20191115_130428.thumb.jpg.22e36d3e3dca87df8258c71f44b355ae.jpg

Just after putting the CX on a transporter to go to Messieurs Dubois et Loizou. Very bad leak from water pump visible; transporter driver thinks he has spotted a split in one of the hoses connected to the pump. Grate.

Never rains but it pours. I bet the hose that's split is one of those that has been unobtainable for years. Wonder if generic hoses are any good?

There is a puddle of what looks like Bailey's Irish Cream on the driveway, but is actually leakage from the cooling system.

Thought I'd have a look at the Audi's bootlid this morning. It holds water out of the boot area fine but water is getting in and building up behind the inner trim panel. When you open the boot it gushes towards the leading edge and out from 2 gaps between the trim and the bootlid frame, soaking the contents of the boot. I rarely use the boot as it isn't a family car so I haven't investigated it up until now.

However as the Mini is currently withdrawn from service pending parts arrival the Audi is the family car for the weekend which entails shopping and using the boot. Mrs_Pin would not be impressed by what happens as described above.

Unscrewed the trim panel, lots of condensation as expected.

Can't see anywhere obvious that the water is getting in but eh, whats that holding in the brake light bulb bar??

Blue roll. Someone has busted out the screw holes when changing the bulbs.

A more acceptable* fix of gaffa tape applied, at least it's not flammable.

Some sealant applied around the light on the outside too, in case thats where the water is getting in.

If your leaky hose still has sufficient integrity to be measured there are several companies that do custom silicone hoses; not cheap but more satisfactory than extra joints, hose clips and a tee piece.

Not a good colour for coolant, or anything else really. I assume the leaves were already there and not expelled from the engine bay!

I have sent it off with three bottles of Prestone coolant flush and supplied a new water pump to be fitted.

Wonder what else will go wrong?

Well that’s tempting fate. Is the de aeration chamber in good nick?

*checks oil on Clio 172*

*Notices one of the fuel rail retaining bolts is loose*

SIGH

Crash protection off and get all the bolts nipped up.

In their infinite wisdom, the crash protection bolts on to two separate studs, so has nowt to do with retaining the fuel rail.

Dunno about that. I'll find out sooner or later. There's probably a reason why it's only done 82000 miles in 31 years....

Fun fact: the turbocharger bypass pipe from a Saab 9-5 makes a damn good vacuum cleaner crevice tool. I bet Saab's engineers never envisaged it could be used in such a fashion

Musty smell in the beemer made me worry water was getting in.

I stripped out the scuttle including the pollen filters - all dry but I rinsed the drains through with hot sospy water anyway.

It must be the mats are damp.

I actually meant to buy this one though.  It's going to take over daily duties from the 75 over the winter.  It's rough as a badger's arse, the clutch is tired, 4th gear synchro is MIA and it has a selection of ABS / traction control related lights on the dash, but it goes, it's decent on fuel, the heater works and my pushbike fits in the back so it meets the Wuvvum WBOD criteria.

This one also has wood* as well as leather*, for the full luxury* experience.  And it was dirt cheap, and only in Downham Market rather than bastarding Congleton like the Sonata was.

Is that what the big alloy cover over the fuel rails+injectors on the F4R and F4P are for? Always wondered!

Yep. Instead of making a metal fuel rail, they made a plastic one and spent more money making an elaborate bolt on alloy protector cover.

Clicked on the link out of curiosity even though I'm never likely to own a CX (I just covet them from afar)

Google translate came up with this.

Well, I thought it was funny.

The site does have an English option, so Google translate not needed. All it does is make potential bankruptcy easier to understand.

Still, it could be worse. I could have a Triumph and be a Rimmers customer......

Forces TV has been re running Miami Vice.

It has aged better than a lot of stuff from the 80's

Just watched episode 6 - it had the brilliant track "voices" by Russ Ballard.

Smoll FL's C3 has konked out tonight and come up with P0204 and P1336 codes, looks like and injector might have gone down but also looks like the top left engine mount may also have given out, got it running again but no power, also making a nasty squeeling noise from the bell housing area.

Anyone know if injector is likely cause on a TU3 1.4 8v before I get one ordered up..
