Time for a useless headlights / Prince of Darkness comparison thread?
Anything with Lucas sealed beams. Three settings; dim, dimmer and off.

Amazing how much a proper set of halogens in a LR Defender 90 helped.

I actually found the sealed beams on my MGB to be surprisingly adequate.  The current owner disagreed however and replaced them with halogens.

Perhaps it was living in a really rural spot at the time. It used to expose poor headlights badly.

I replaced the wiring for the headlights I do admit for the Defender at the time. And then tended to run the ultrabright halogens. Less burn time out of them but worth it on unlit country roads.

For what it's worth, there's a bin in my local halfords with loads of the +90/120/150% brightness halogens. Got two +90 Bosch H4s for a tenner. Which is good value.

Anyone going to the East Anglia car auctions on 2nd November? I'm going with Father Fumbler because he's attending a Barge Meet and I was wondering if there would be anyone from here going for the auction itself.

My MGB headlights are like two candles on the front. Modern LED street lights are substantially brighter and better at lighting the road up!

Four candles would be better.

Possibly, but I've said that about 2 or 3 of these this year and not made any yet … there's a thread on ACA, try asking in that nearer the time.

Anglia Car Auction … Kings Lynn, I assume that's what you were referring to

Presumably anyone who drives/drove a Vauxhall Calibra could compare notes.....

I drove into a Vauxhall Calibra once. That did my CX headlights no good at all.

Fancyplates turned up this morning which was great apart from the fact it is and has been pissing down all day. I don't think rain and sticking acrylic to plastic works too well so I still have an illegal car :)  In fact, it is raining so much his royal fatness refuses to go out! Phoebe has dashed out, peed and dashed back in a few times but I think Chester has just crossed his legs and tied a knot in his todger! I did try to drag him outside, but he's fat, heavy and low slung so apart from the carpet rucking up, I got nowhere.

As an aside: number plates have got effing expensive these days ain't they? I used to buy a pair for about £7 and whinged like a bitch about that. With postage, these buggers cost £38!!!!!!! Local shop wanted £28 for plain ones and Halfords were in the £30s range but I didn't ask about 'with trade card' prices.

Edit:

I have just taken el Mutley out for a walk (it's stopped raining and he actually wanted to go out - what a surprise!) and had a quick look at the car... number plates are BOLTED on, not stuck. I was so convinced they were stuck on I didn't even bother looking. I am such a twat I really am. Anyway, dug the drill out and stuck it on charge it would have been typical of me to go out tomorrow, now aware they were bolt on and have a flat battery in the drill.

That's nice to see! Montego Estate's don't seem common anymore, even in the UK! 2.0 Turbo Diesel I think? Looking at what looks to be "Turbo" below the Countryman badge?

(Non existent in New Zealand)

That rear arch looks very frilly. Upon closer inspection, so do the doors.

Talking of MOTs, mine is getting prodded around as I type this.

Are trim rattles a failure these days??

I hope not!

Nope, I a bit of a bodge door trim that sometimes flap on the C5.

As long as it doesnt cause a potential injury I think you're fine

Well, unsurprisingly the bargain* eBay Honda Accord Tourer needed a fair bit of work for the MOT. Bought for £410 with lapsed MOT. Suspension bushes both sides at the front, two new tyres, brake pads and various other stuff. Now has MOT but still an oil leak and stands me at £850 now. Not too bad for an 06 diesel Accord estate with all the options ticked I suppose.... Although 179,000 miles it seems like a nice old thing. Fingers crossed. Now to actually find and fix the oil leak. Mrs Beard not entirely pleased about the black stain on the sandstone paving.

In today's vectra fettling. I got four part worn winter tyres. Not bad a mixture of good year , unirioyal and Michelin. Removed the rear wiper has well. This must have rotted through and he had riveted a 6 inch square over the hole. Looked a mess. So of with it bonded it underneath and then filled. This needs to be tidied up but just through some primer on till maybe next week when I get chance.

Can I ask where you got it?

So, Vauxhall, all are shit etc, are offering four fucking bags scrappage if you

buy a new one. Bit desperate innit ?

Gets a bit old, this "all Vauxhalls are...".

For balance, Ford are doing it as well and the advert contains the voice of a passenger who suggests scrapping the car because it has a 'CD player' and non-working air con.

It's fucking abominable.

Anyway, this afternoon I was parking up at the post office, returning the unused Mini parts to Autodoc and a chap is standing admiring the Audi. I never tire of seeing their faces when I tell them that I won it!

Ended up having a natter with him about his Sierra and how polybushes and coilovers are shite for a daily.

Good stuff!

I heard that advert earlier and thought.... one of mine has a cassette player and no air con and on another you open a little flap in the bodywork for ventilation! You can keep your fancy CD players and air con ability thank you very much I’ll be driving my old heaps.

I quite like the look of that Duster, I think it has future classic in the line of other greats like old Lada and so on, its a bargain for what it is anyway and so unexceptional, I am tempted to get one (not new though).

My car has a cassette player with auto-reverse and Dolby NR. Who needs this swanky CD stuff anyway?
