Mileage discrepancy - haircut?

Recommended Posts

Speak to Seller it’s obviously had some magic applied at some time either mot tester or mileage correction.

If it was 900 quid I don’t suppose you would be bothered but 1400 would make me judge

Seller rumbled that the car has had multiple Quentins?

The car's been clocked, and is worth £800 tops. My daily 318i has had three plate changes since the MOT thing started and there is no discrepancy.

It's off. Seller has pulled the car from sale.

Probably for the best. Something better might be round the corner.

Buy the pez one off here, and see how bad/good it is on your daily route..if its crap - flog it, if not keep it and spend £1200 on booze......or summat!!

4.5 k ! Who do you use for repairs ? The queens personal mechanic ?

For 4.5 large, I'd want the Queen herself fixing it.

Why didn't you spend £200 on the VW Pasta that was on here? £1300 would have bought a lot of petrol with the gap between the Diesel and Petrol fuel economy.

I bought that. It's a bit shite, but it got me home.

Clutch, flywheel, rebuilt gearbox, turbo ans 3 window regulators. The 4th one failed 3 months ago. Top quality automobiles. This with 59k miles and full history.

now on 72k and for now is running okay.

59k or "59k" . Full history at that mileage on vag stuff means it's had two services !

You have probably had the right result on this since from what I have read here there is enough to ring the alarm bells that the car might have been clocked at some point - and even if it hasn't and the DVLA's  MOT history is incorrect, then you will struggle to sell it on since your future buyer will very likely do the same checks as you have done. That sounds expensive!

The DVLA's MOT history site is far from accurate though. My own car's history is garbled on it - it looks like it has had another car's MOTs added to it, since it records fails and advisories the car has never had - and at the wrong mileage.

know the on-line MOT History database is wrong for my car: it isn't speculation or wishful thinking on my part over my car's low mileage (100,000 miles in 25 years). Only my late father and I have ever put the car in for an MOT - and the spurious couple of  mileage/MOT fail/advisories recorded were in the time I have owned the car.

It makes no practical difference to me since the car has a huge sentimental value to me and I intend never to sell it, but if I was to sell I suspect 'alarm bells' will ring to some potential buyers over the car being clocked at one point.

It seems to be treated as some kind of word from the Gospel on here and elsewhere, but there are mistakes on the MOT History database - and I'll wager mine is by no means the only one!

SnrYoof's XF is a high mileage example - he bought it at around 75000 miles when it was around eighteen months old. As he's a mathematician, he has its mileage read out in kilometres, because metric. As I'm sure other people may also choose km for various other reasons, the XF helpfully states 'kilometres' next to the number on the speedo behind the steering wheel.

Unfortunately (and predictably, I'm sure) this was interpreted and recorded in 'miles' at its first MOT test, which it failed on its windscreen wiper and rear upper suspension arms. So it failed its MOT on 25th October 2016 and the mileage on the MOT site is recorded as '129,107 miles', and then it passed on 2nd November with the mileage recorded as '80,244 miles'. SnrYoof was obviously not terribly pleased about this.

It was MOTed in October this year, and passed without any issues. The mileage was recorded as '137,211 kilometres'. One can hope that the reason for the discrepancy in 2016 can be deduced by anyone checking the MOT site, but it has certainly created an interesting issue when/if he ever decides to sell it privately.

My HiAce camper had two different entries with DVLA, basically because there's a "-" in the chassis number and some testers put that in, and some didn't. One tester also filled in the milage one year in miles when it's Kms.

Wouldn't VAGCOM have been able to read the deep memory on the car to find out the true milage.

Resale values would be least of my concerns with buying a £1400 car.

My thoughts too. This one did seem pricey though, and some dodgyness regarding the mileage. Avoid.

A lot of people make a big deal about ‘full history’. Nice to have but it doesn’t put me off if there’s no history, you can see if it’s been looked after. My current car had no history whatsoever but it’s clearly been looked after.

You buy what you can afford.

I could afford a £1400 car but I'd rather buy a £250 car, spend £150 doing it up and squander the rest.

AmI doing it wrong?

Posted

My experience is that a £250 car often needs more than £150 spending on it. Then again, so does a £1400 car! I think it's because I have to use a garage as my time and skills are limited i.e. I make it worse.

A fucking this century 1400 quid diesel Passat?

Seriously?

Jeezerz fucking Chroist, I wish this world wouldn't fucking exist.

Do I really have to mention '1986' to you woefully dismal losers void of any balls?

No child left behind applies.

And to make myself perfectly clear here, I'd rather kill relatives and set a fucking caravan on fire

before I put myself through the ordeal to drive a fucking diesel a bloody yard.

No, makes this an inch.

Get a fucking life, for God's sake.

And a 1959 Morris Oxford, I'm begging you, please.

Jeezerz shat. Seriously.

Agreed. I've spent the last day trying to convince stupid sister #1 not to buy a diesel for her first car. "But my friend told me to buy a diesel, great economy etc". I heard his piece of shit Corsa rattle into life yesterday, it sounded awful and its deluded owner thinks it's brilliant. She now wants a 'BM-bruv' which makes me ashamed to call her a sibling. At least she's been talked out of a diesel (on environmental grounds!) FFS.
