Dave's collection fail.

It's shat out on the M5. I'm in frankley services between j3 and j4.

Bummer.

Traffic was savage and the temp went into the red and started chuffing coolant out the overflow. If I keep it at 50 mph or less it's ok but as soon as I speed up or climb a hill the temp shoots up. Probable head gasket.

If anyone has ideas I am all ears. I have uk RAC cover but what they going to do? Tow it to Aberdeen?

I can probably nurse it onwards from here as long as I keep speed down. I can't sit here forever anyway due to the 2 hour time limit.

Help.

Aaah crap. I'm miles away but figured I'd bump this to keep it near the top.

Good luck.

If you only would have bought the Dangel I suggested.

I bet that helped...

Honestly, if I was any closer I'd be on my way already, but sadly you're outside the GGG's jurisdiction,

which is the second mistake you made.

However, there is blessing in disguise. You are lucky enough to have broken down in MM territory.

Might be as well to call the rac in case it's something they can maybe fix like a non running fan out stuck stat.

The bastards wouldn't charge you for overstay if you've broken down, would they? Oh.

Wait till later tonight when traffic clears and its cooler. How far is the next services? Regular pitstops to let it cool down.

Dave, get some tape or similar, and cover your plates before you leave. ANPR cameras can't see when you left and therefore, can't ticket you.

Allegedly, although it has worked for me in the past.

Just phone the number on the signs. It's not hard.

I sold a car from a camera controlled car park. The guy took it away on a low loader. I called up and said it has left on a low loader and they made a note. Never heard any more.

Oh shit. Wish I was close enough to help. Possible it's boiled and got an airlock - let it cool, raise expansion tank (if it has one) and refill slowly, find out what's caused it to cook - if it's got an electric fan, hotwire it?

I'd offer to come out if I wasn't at work, no help I know but hopefully things will work out

Tell the services you've broken down, they're quite good with that sort of thing.

The RAC might tow it to Aberdoom for you, depends on the level of cover you have.

Posted

If you've got Relay cover, yes they will take it all the way to Aberdeen for you. They may also offer to pay for repair at a local garage to where you are in lieu of the tow if it would be cheaper for them.

Be wary of this however. they made me this offer when the alternator shat itself on my cavalier in the lake district a couple of years back rather than haul it back to Fife. I took them up on it, then after the repair they suddenly said it was only a certain percentage of the cost they would cover and of course it was at a main dealer so it ended up costing me a lot more than if id just had them tow it home and got a mate to sort it.

If they give you the offer, and you are up for it, make sure you have a written confirmation of what percentage of the cost they'll wear.

I'm not far away but can only point and say it's fucked, mechanical knowledge is somewhat lacking. I can bring K-seal and hope.

What fine stead have you broken down in?

Posted

Sorry if I'm being simple - are you heading north to Aberdeen to collect, or south from Aberdeen having already collected? Or C) none of the above?

^^ I believe he flew in to the UK, picked up whatever steed and is/was currently heading back to the South of France.

Posted

I'd assumed he was heading to Scotland, didn't he fly to London? Even Birmingham he'd be going the wrong way to get back to France.

No useful help from up here in Dundee but have a bump and a sad face to be no help.

This happened to me in my old Cav SRi once, when I was about 150 miles from home. My solution was to fill up as many containers as I could find with water & continue on my way, keeping the speed down as much as possible & topping up with water when necessary. I then fixed the HGF at my leisure once I'd got it home.

Only just seen this. Are you still at Frankley? I am only 15-ish miles from there.

Posted

It's only doing a couple of miles before overheating again. I limped it as far as I could be assed and am now waiting for the rac.

Great picture! where are you now?

M40 southbound milepost 130.3.

"we will send a flatbed."

Small orange van turns up.

"you need a flatbed."

No shit.

I'd offer shiter fixing services in Oxon but that's no help. Get it towed to scarys or that chap that fixed dollywobblers smx? Bit more north anyway

Posted

I'd love to be a fly on the wall for that flatbed cab conversation.

"Far from home?"

That's a bugger & it looks quite tidy too.

Aye its literally perfect for me in every way. Apart from the obvious.

I bumped it up the embankment a bit. Sitting by a piss-wet motorway in the dark is a definite 0/10 would not recommend.

Still, I at least have some 90s blue dolphins to keep me company.
