NEW New new new New top gear ON HOLD, RIP?

On I player right now appears to be every episode of post 2002 top gear. I’ve been dipping into them; episode 1 series 1 is interesting to see how the “studio” evolved and how they got into their stride gradually with trips and challenges.

The chemistry is beginning to work, they can do the sound and audio, what they are short of is a good editor and three new, good ideas per episode.  Too much filler for an international money generator and feels like 30 minutes of content squeezed into an hour slot.

Was it silver resprayed diamond white?

i think its not an xr3i but just an 1.6i cab

I remember them being new. Were they essentially the same spec but not badged as XR cos, well, you wouldn't rally in a cabrio?

The earlier, MK3 based cabrio was just badged as 1.6i for the injected version, but with the Mk4 facelift, it was badged as an XR3i, as with the tin-top version.

I do think they've still got more ideas than The Grand Tour have (given their last special about French Cars). We watched Top Gear as a family on Christmas Eve and even those who have no interest in cars found it pretty funny.

I can only really re-iterate the point others have already raised that I'm just really pleased they no longer completely destroy all the cars they use - I think that BX only suffered a little shunt from the Escort and a mangled door mirror from when the tree fell off the roof.

I hate seeing them destroy (usually very nice) cars and I hope these three survived, but I'm guessing fitting a roll cage into each of them will have effectively ruined dashboards/ interiors and floor pans etc.

I've worked on TV and film sets and cars are only even treated like any other props, that is, with the view of disposing of them after the filming is wrapped.

Ready for a load of stick but I reckon they work well. The 3 of them obviously like each other, it's a bit like a buddy movie every episode. Plus they genuinely make me laugh

first 10 mins and theyre talking about famous cop cars

theyve already missed bergerac and kojak and theyve not mentioned bullitt yet or rockford or maigret or columbo (FTW)

how about taggart?

or streets of san francisco

Missed the first two minutes, but I thought that it wasn't bad tonight. I zoned out a bit during the cop cars bit, but it genuinely did have some funny moments. The C5 bit was pretty good too. Obviously they broke down, (and for some reason didn't use the pedals) but it wasn't the "aren't these things crap" sort of story that I might have expected.

I'm still not making big efforts to get back to see it, and I know that this is pretty mild praise, but I think that the team are settling in well (because it takes a long time) and it is getting better.

I thought the C5 bit would be Chris showing that modern lithium batteries and compact, controlled motor, the thing could be useable.  Would still be bloody terrifying in traffic though.

One guy off the c5 groups was so pissed off by their production team fannying him about that he sold his collection. He said it had soured the whole thing for him.

How precious is that.

Could it get any worse?

I don't mind the lanky one but the other one just refuses to pipe down and really gets on my tits.

The cricketer on has the most annoying fake laugh I've ever heard. Paddy isn't too bad though.

No idea what either have to do with cars though.

It's an entertainment show which normally features cars. The C5 bit making one into a bobsleigh was entertaining but not car-y.

I don't mind the presenters, it's much better than the Evans/Leblanc times. I thought the cop car bit last night with dirty cobra and the Preston ranger was pretty funny.

My wife and 13yo daughter watch it with me, so for what the BBC want it to be it's a success.

If you want to see someone modernising a C5 and driving it in traffic I'm sure you can see that on YouTube.

I though the bob sleight this was a little familiar. When I googled it about about 10 years ago TG went to Lillehammer and raced Hammond (pre him looking like Noel Edmonds) in a Bobsleigh vs May in a Mitsubishi EVO driven by a rally driver (pre him looking  like Richard Branson).

May was so terrified in the EVO all the noises he made where ones of Terror. I have to say the cinematography and how they setup shots on the old one is much better.

I thought it was a bit familiar. Agreed re production values. Maybe they are on a tighter budget these days?

I like the new team but for me the original 3 are more of a satisfying mix to watch. I think even though the original 3 could be very daft as well it was underpinned by cleverness, whereas the new 3 are not, Harris aside. The balance has changed.

He could’ve gone to the Daily Fail/Express/S*n/GB News with his arms folded moaning about it. Which would then be spun as “woke BBC ruin one man’s life dream”

I didn’t even know Top Gear was back on, but I realised the other day that I’ve only watched about 20 hours of broadcast TV since the lad was born 6 months ago. Mooted the idea of cancelling the TV license to the wife, who said no as all she’s watched on TV this year has been EastEnders.

So we’re paying £150 a year to watch shitting EastEnders.

You'd think being on BBC1 would give them a bigger budget. I think old Top Gear had a very particular style and they're possibly trying to differentiate by not following that.

It certainly doesn't have the flair of the earlier ones.

I always thought them all being regular motoring journalists at one point or another gave them a bit of substance when it came to the cars. The new presenters obviously know nothing and are just scripting it but then again I doubt Julia Bradbury is an expert on the best practices of storing silage but she still presents Country File.

On the original 3 I still quite like Clarkson but I've gone right off May and Hammond. Hammond mainly for his slow transformation into Noel Edmonds. He even has a Helicopter FFS.

Thought the latest episode was very good, certainly better than the latest Grand Tour specials which were frankly terrible.

That’s it- you’ve put it better than me; there’s just a bit more substance behind the antics. Clarkson had a long period as a general and motoring journo, and more of a conventional motoring program background as well as more of a general interest in and knowledge of the world. A bit more substance behind things; and perhaps more involvement in ideas and content?
