Dollywobbler's Omegawd - Cruisin' (old people can do it too)

Currently trying to find someone to fix it. Think I have. More as the situation develops. This is turning into a right caper! Which is all the more fun really.

I may have to deploy my extra pants. I did bet on not making it home tonight.

On the plus side you could probably sleep in the boot without even having to fold the seats down.......

Doesn't seem to have gone too badly so far.

So what was the leak in the end? Pump?

The other stuff is just minor really and overall not bad for a 20 year old car that's been sat unused.

It's possible DW had a teenage crush on her back in the 1980s.  I know I did.

MMM  ! Thank you Rob, been wondering for a while who she is............

Fewer references to smoking and Honda Preludes though.

Ditto. About the only time I ever watched blue peter. She used to wear some very short skirts IIRC.

I have to stop - my asthma's kicking off again....

Pump top seal gone. Easy repair, but we don't have parts. Spring change currently in progress.

Posted

Old knackered spring is out. New one is wrong. No one lists the correct spring if self levelling is fitted. ARSE.

Posted

No way it can be converted to use standard rear springs etc? Most likely more expensive than just changing the one I guess.

Get to it DW.  You could also tell us how everyone's wrong and automatics are the best drivers cars (Esp. S class Mercs) and BG 323F GTIs are better than all hot hatches short of a mini.

Hope the parts make themselves available shortly!

I'd get the fucker home and fret about it another day.

More than one day away on a collection officially counts as a holiday.  Get your shorts on, order the shrimp and enjoy the snow.

Work under way earlier.

The problem. Mismatched springs.

The solution? Fit it anyway. The cones don't fit snuggly, but it does fit, and it feels entirely the same to drive. I think I will try and sort a better solution out one day. Probably.

Still got the diesel and exhaust leaks to sort tomorrow...

Oh and I'm spending the night with friends. My toes are thawing out and I'm playing with cats. Ace.

I think you've done pretty OK there - obviously the best result would have been a full pass with no advisories, but this ain't no fairy tale.

So the spring will work, the exhaust can be bandaged - and even if a full system isn't available, you can probably get some random bits of pipe and stuff to make it work. It's not like it needs something that's dealer only, specific to that model year.

I saw that the diesel leak initially wasn't bad, and by the time it got to the MOT station it was piddling out so that was only get worse on the way home. Dozens of bikers thank you for your common sense.

Other than the MOT stuff, what's it like then?

What's the deal with the leak? Is it a simple gasket change or more involving.

This is the badger, this is top and bottom quantity adjuster gaskets, sounds like DW just needs the top one.

Obvs on eBay in Poland doesn't get him home tomorrow, but if there's an old school diesel place locally they might have one in stock.

If not I'd be tempted to measure the gasket path length and stick a standard O-ring of the appropriate size in, Lucas XUD pumps just use a big O-ring in a similar shape groove so no reason why it won't seal here.

Any diesel specialist should have the seal in stock but it's the weekend now. Balls.

Edit: would carefully applied instant gasket work as a temporary measure?

This is a new venture for Autoshite, getting a car road legal before putting it on the road when we all know that the law is just about vague enough to drive it back from the MOT test centre several hundred miles away.

Will be turning into Pistonheadz soon with loads of powerfully built company directors sniffing around the place with their executive Vauxhalls.

The quantity adjuster is low pressure, so possibly. Wouldn't want to risk lumps of shite in there though.

I very nearly lost my bike on a diesel spill a couple of years ago. My boots still have the scuffs to prove it, and to this day I've no idea how I saved it

So cheers for being sensible, fingers crossed you get some positive karma in return :)

I locked up my front wheel (supposedly instant fail) doing the emergency stop on my bike test as the examiner picked a pool of diesel to stand in front off, apparently he must have heard my cursing and swearing as he told me to ride the circuit again while he picked somewhere less greasy to jump out from. I passed which was a surprise as I didn't give a shit for the rest of the test thinking I had failed!
