I know that a 200 TDi has been fitted to a P4 before, so it probably would indeed bolt straight* in.

Well, 08.30-ish beckoned. It's snowing, traffic is shit and I'm flapping about getting it back and getting home in time for an appointment.

Here's where it was, a decent haul from the road, through two sets of gates and up a level or two of slabs, in the garage...

Got there before my mate so whizzed the trusty cycle stirrup pump out of the Transit and said a quick prayer to the great God of mostly flat, original looking directional tyres. TR& had already gone (in truth, had I known early enough I'd have preferred that) and then my mate arrived. Truck doesn't fit all the way up the drive, several straps, slide bed down and winch cable ahoy...

Some Brucie bonus items. WTF is that big 'phone, and can those old BT carphones be bought back to life? Nothing is going to say 'made it in life' more than telling someone to sell my shares in Isopon as I cruise down the M53 in my Vectra.

Had a brill time, it was only about 5 miles away, if that, but the whole thing has been a blast. The old boy next door came out and was telling us how he's been restoring a 1960's 220 Mercedes for years.

That big phone is a field test handset, known as a buttinski, very cool! Want!

Sadly, old car phones cannot be used anymore as they don't use the modern network, but still very cool! (in my eyes at least)

Looking forward to seeing sunken teeth in this Rover. Good Luck!

How much for the BT fone m8?  It'd look great in my Cavalier as a period piece.

Rover looks superb, well bought!

Those P5’s are handsome old bastards. We did a band photoshoot next to/on one at a racers yard years ago and even in a terminal just-about-to-be-stripped-for-racing state, it still looked hard as nails.

Godspeed with yours - I hope it sees the road again.

Excellent work and the bonus linesman's telephone means free telephone calls for life (providing you get some spikes to strap on your boots and you're prepared to climb a telegraph pole every time you need to make a call..)

Water loss could be the plastic thermostat housing, mine cracked a chunk off it parked at asda not long after I'd met amy and puked all the coolant out. Not a terribly tricky job, the hardest part was rotating the 2 pipe clips so they could be got at with pliers, remove one of the headlights for easeconvincing Amy I was a viable prospect in spite of my broken car.

Or it could be leaking from many other places of course

FTFY.

Lovely Rover.

I would also like to express interest in buying the car phone, could I be put in line after Rob? A car phone has no use to me at all, but that doesn't stop me from wanting one in my car.

Billy, you’ve outdone yourself (again).

Well jel of the BT jamdog, too.

I'm not sure if this is a particularly lucid dream or I've slipped into a bizarre parallel universe but we appear to be in a situation where Billy's actually bought I car that I like.

I was actually going to buy this dead on midnight, just so I could say I bought a car on Chrimbo day, but I can't be arsed staying up...

It's fate is already (not K-) sealed, it's an automatic and the box has spazzed itself.

Oh aye:

Supposedly it’s had £600 spent on the engine this year. Tiny spot of mayo on oil filler cap, lots on dipstick and rad fan stayed on a couple of seconds after engine knocked off, plus the odd hunt at idle. Absolutely hums inside, most of clocks don’t light up, locks one in twenty attempts, glass misting up easily on inside and I haven’t seen the car in daylight.

Leather seats though!

That garage looks awesome. About perfect size for working on a car.

I thought that too! With a nice big work bench and tool chests/cupboards across the back wall and a smattering of lighting it would be a fantastic place for the DIYer.

Posted

Hmm, wonder if those wheels would fit a Dolomite.

Iz u too embarrassed to take daytime pics?

16.00:

'Do you want to buy a car?'

Probably.

'Ok, I'll message you when it's here'

6.27pm:

'It's here'

6.29pm:

In car with keys, test drive commences.

6.34pm:

Car bought.

It seems to have come from MGR Direct when new, looking at the plates and the rear window sticker.

Posted

iXL top spec, way to go - should have height adjustable seats - good buy. (eyes up seats, wonders whether transferable to Streetwise)

Mayo may just be remnants from previous OMGHGF as it's a bugger to shift ?

Rad fan - never comes on in my Streetwise, but they do run on if hot - thermostat ?

Lock issues - are you talking fob locking or key locking ?

Do fan speeds 1 and 2 work ? £5, 5 minute fix if not.

Cat piss roll up odour ? 10 x Poundland car air fresheners and a bottle of Febreze

Posted

Good point about the mayo, if there's enough fuel in it I'll roll round in it for a few days and see what happens. The key doesn't fit the door lock, so has to go off remote which mostly doesn't seem to activate the locking, though there is a whirr.

Heater (temp control) knob doesn't quite go round to the end on 'hot' and the one to change speed has broken, see pictures! I've also noticed I think the rww isn't working, but there's shit loads of MOT on the thing. Though whether it lasts that longs is debatable.

Oh, someone on Facebook Rover page says the sticker in back window and number plate logos means it was probably a Rover worker's car (on their scheme) to start with.

I think this is my favourite one so far, mainly becaus after this bit...

6.29pm:

In car with keys, test drive commences.

...one must assume that this became apparent:

Tiny spot of mayo on oil filler cap, lots on dipstick and rad fan stayed on a couple of seconds after engine knocked off, plus the odd hunt at idle. Absolutely hums inside, most of clocks don’t light up, locks one in twenty attempts, glass misting up easily on inside...

And yet this still happened...:

6.34pm:

Car bought.

Wouldn't worry too much about the misted up windows, Billy - mine does that, probably a shagged seal somewhere (haven't found mine yet). I actually came back to ice inside the car the other evening, none outside !

Central locking/immobiliser via fob will be Lucas 5AS on that reg (Pektron from 53 reg on, right pain in the arse in the electric weirdness department)

Posted

Omg A/C!

Rear wiper is often chafed wires where it goes from car to tail gate. Might be causing central locking weirdness too.

The fob range of MG Rover era stuff is terrible, even with the Lucas bits. Apparently you can re route the antenna if you can be bothered.

same  as my Punto last night....in 2.5 hours it had deposited a lovely coat of ice INSIDE the front and rear windows....and the Damn doors keep freezing solid onto the door rubbers ....WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ROOF RAILS..No need for the stoopid door seals that freeze then!!
