VOLVO 960 Should I?

Recommended Posts

Might have a chance at a 960 next week (it isn't actually for sale yet....)

Being as I change my cars as often as North Korea presidents this could be quite traumatic.

It is being considered as an addition at present.

960 3.0 24V auto estate.

Not bothered about fuel economy or car tax but what kills these (apart from being an old car, obvs.) ?

I know there is a lot of love on here for them and its one of the few "everyday" cars I can see myself in.

I need to sort it out in my head as I fancy a Volvo estate again, but didn't one of the auto gearboxes implode more than average whereas other versions were as reliable as any other auto box.

'What kills these?'

You not buying it. That's what kills it.

You're not some kind of monster are you?

I need to know too, next car MUST be a straight six saloon.

Dam right you should buy it!

They are great cars, last of the traditional old Volvo's. I think these ones are pretty good tbh, though I prefer the old 4 cylinder 'red block' engines for ultimate bullet proof ness.

The thing that probably kills most of them now is running costs I'd think, nobody appreciates quality and dependability or comfort anymore, it's all about mpg costs.

Head gaskets can let go and it's a big old lump. Rads have plastic shoulders that can snap inside coolant hoses.

I'm glad you said fuel economy wasn't a concern if it's a 3.0...

That said a mates dad had a 2.4 S80, could achieve 30mpg driven gently. One of these might be a better bet as there's more choice.

If it is cheap enough to end up in a roffle on here, the answer has to be yes!

I've always avoided 960s because the white block is known for HGF, plus "complex", but still, much envy. Particularly if it's green or that purple/red colour.

Grab it and if you decide you don't like it, Roffle it.  I'm in for three....

Well thank you for your encouragement!

Bloke is not around till next week and doesn't yet know his car is for sale (!) so this could end in the empty pit of disappointment.

I've bloody psyched myself  up now.....

Apart from HGF and occassional batty gearbox these seem pretty vice free and the six pot is lovely. Watch for rot though as I think all 960s are Swedish built and they seem more prone to it for some reason. Jacking points, front chassis legs, the crossmember under the radiator and under the battery/screenwash tank are all known grotty spots but serious corrosion is rare. Dave2000 has had two so is perhaps the man to ask for more details.

Many pictures please.

I got pissed up one night in 2002 and ended up buying one of these.

The car was in Sheffield and the owner 'interviewed' me before I was allowed to hand over the cash.

One of my better decisions, built from granite.

Just buy that V70 T5 that's for sale on here and have done with it.

Far more entertaining.

Those of us with 4 cylinder 8v Volvo estates will be Jealous!

I'm not, and my 4-pot Volvo is completely and utterly shagged.

You still absolutely should though.

My 3.0 24v auto S90 saloon is still up for grabs if anyone else experiences similar inklings...

Ours even has a 960 3.0 24v badge on it!

Ok it shows how shallow and vein I am!
