Thanks, that's one I hadn't heard of. So my interpretation of the badge contained some of the correct letters....

Looking at some pictures some of them are carrying Robur badges presumably because they used Robur engines, in the way that many UK lorries had Gardner or Rolls Royce badges along with their makers logo.

The badge on this makes it easier to identify.

I didn't know about these until today either. And I think it's more than just the engine that is Robur, the cabin is very similar so it's probably a Robur cabin and when I study pictures of these I see that they are front wheel drive can clearly see the drive shaft going to the front axle from a transfer box. So it makes me wonder are these a 4x4 Robur with the rear end cut off? I think so.

But fascinating trucks didn't know such a thing existed.

I visited the Leyland factory ten or so years ago. They make all DAF RHD products and all LFs and all CF65s. Most of the parts are imported but the Cummins B series engines in those models are sourced from Darlington and their axles are from AAC who operate from the old Albion factory in Glasgow. Their bigger trucks all use DAF parts from the Benelux.

Holy crap you moved a Fortschritt E303! They are self-propelled mowers and they have many different attachments but I've never seen this one before think it may really belongs to the E281? Do you have better pictures?

It's interesting you say that as I did think the tractor was much more substantial than a normal swather, it had a proper steering axle etc rather than trolley wheels. Still a weird thing to drive . It was a proper Fortschitt header with it.

I didn't take any other pics than this, it was a H reg I think and I picked it up from a farm near Pocklington. It's just outside Edinburgh now and the guy has about 25 acres of OSR to do with it and some for his neighbours.

Thought I might do a guide about loading a bigger transporter for those who are interested?

So this is known as a ‘Plus 9’ transporter as back in the day, they’d carry 9 big cars.  Or 10/11 if there was a lot of small cars mixed in.  These days, the ‘peak deck’ will have been removed from them so they’re down to just six big cars or 8 if they’re small.  And by small I mean low, not short.

Here it is a few weeks ago with 8 new Polo’s on:

And here it is empty, this morning, ready to be loaded:

Cars are usually in compounds so you can get your 10,000 steps in if you’ve got a few to fine in amongst a few hundred cars that all look basically the same:

I managed to find my load quite quickly this morning:

To load it, I pulled down the ramps at the back and optimised my load for careful weight distribution:

Put a strap over each wheel and we are ready to go!

Its easy when you know how.

No, they’re paying too much but they came on the phone on Friday wanting the car moving from Cambridgeshire to South Wales by today.  I had some collections in the area today so it’s fitted in.

If they had more notice, they’d have paid less.

I think they only made two of those “tortoise” tanks. They were waaaaaay too big to put into production at the end of the war.

The USAF have been sending more weird Yank stuff my way. A Kenworth dump truck isn't something you'd expect to see in Merrie Olde England.

Nor is an International 4900, although hasn't @puddlethumper's circus got a similar one?

Cubby's (James A Cuthbertson) yard in Biggar, thankfully someone seems to have taken pictures before it was cleared out.

They were an engineering company who also did heavy work, pipe and cable laying, heavy off road recovery, railway work, but most well known for snowploughs. The Diamond T on the right I can remember being brought out in the bad winters to keep the A702 with a large V plough on the front. They've been saved recently and getting back to being a force in the winter maintenance field.

They never seemed to throw anything away and as they had the old station yard there was plenty of storage to just park them up. Our high school playing field was just across a burn from the yard but I didn't appreciate it at that age in the 70's.

I wondered that myself as I can't make out anyone sitting in the left seat. Seems highly improbable for the USAF to have imported it from Aus/NZ so it's more likely to be a custom RHD build from the US, but why bother as all the other Yank stuff I've seen is LHD?

They have MAN TGAs in both LHD and RHD and I've seen the same chap driving both. That must be confusing with a high potential for Sacoolas incidents.

Probably a Cummins L10, unless it's a Q-plate because it's a bitsa. Most likely ex-military though. Cracking example of the breed!

I don't think the military had TMs like that. They were all 4x4 or 6x6 with narrow cabs AFAIK. This one is probably a Q reg as it's from the time before 1988 when recovery vehicles could run on trade plates and might even have a Detroit 2-stroke. It's an amazing survivor and looking at Jon Beech's website he has some remarkable old stuff.

ISTR the MoD buying a load of 6x4s towards the end of production (presumably GM couldn't give them away by that point) for general purpose use. True, the army had loads of the AWD variants, but if I'm remembering correctly (and that's by no means certain!) they went to the RAF and navy for non off-road duties. Lugging stuff around in the many and varied support roles, in other words. 

It was partly why AWD/Multidrive assumed they'd won a watch when they bought the TL/TM rights from GM. 

As an aside, I remember a Multidrive Foden Alpha being advertised in Commercial Motor years ago: it was a one-off 6x6 prototype with a powered, steerable three axle drag - yep, 12x12 with a gimbal in the middle - rated for 55t, and only one careful* owner. The army, who'd decided it wasn't for them... Not cheap, even as a reject, but what a thing to tool about in!

It’s definitely got a Cummins motor, but not clued up on them enough. Probably an L10 as it didn’t sound like the usual m11/m14 I was used to back in the day.

I’ve been truck spotting in Queensland. Interestingly most trucks are double drive here and bonneted trucks (usually Mack) are quite common especially as short body tippers. I rather liked this learner UD tractor unit.
