hi...ive recently sold my ford pop gasser ( Notso Popular ) and my morris oxford MO...so i was on the lookout for a new toy for the Notso Special Speed Shop... a shop truck..

had my mind set on a small van...marina or maestro... but a mate of mine sent me a link on gumtree for "CUSTOM CF2"...now i had already searched for "bedford cf"...but the cf2 doesnt come up in a CF search..so not many veiwers for the ad....

anyway an early morning trip to dundee got me this....a 1985 CF2... With the 2ltr Opel engine/ZF 5 speed box and a set of black 8 spoke wheels.

first thing to do was get rid of the black wheels...so a quick rub down and out with the rattle can,in bright silver..

after that it was time to firstly sort out the inside...i used 18mm ply to make a bed platform across the back, the ply was covered in thick foam underlay and grey shagpile carpet with a rollout mattress on top...and also fitted a pair of minibus seats with seat belts, for the grand kids...

as im after a sort of 70s retro van,i was over the moon to find a brand new pair of portholes on Gumtree.. just need to get them fitted now...but im leaving any other bodywork issues untill next year...just want to enjoy it for now...

iv still got a load of LEDs to install both inside and out...i have a cd/mp3 head unit in for now but have a dvd system waiting in the wings...and i cant make my mind up which front seats to use..i have leather alfa seats and a pair of Puma Millenium Edition Recaros...trial and error i suppose...let my backside decide on that question... ;-)

other than that ive had my back windows tinted in blue mirror film and added usual "Keep On Truckin" decals...

theres now a 40 channel CB with twin antennas too

"Today, still wanted by nobody in particular they survive as Shiters of fortune; if you have a worthless old heap, if nobody else will take it as a gift, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire THE A(utoshite) TEAM......................................................................

Sorry, your excellent looking Bedford van transported me back to the 80's and my childhood television viewing, I have a fondness for anything Bedford having owned an ex British Telecom HA van when I was 19, it still had the outline of it's "Buzby" motive on the side and was christened Berkeley by my Dad,  (from whom I get my warped sense of humour) apologies to our younger members who might not have a clue as to what I'm rambling on about

Pic borrowed from flickr but you get the idea.

I still miss my CF1 that went to scrap 32 years ago...

Btw, Doc?  I had a HA too, ex-British Rail :)

But the CF I really really miss, it was such a laugh.

Eddy, I think it's technically impossible to be a Gentleman of a certain age who has not owned a 7CWTish  van previously supplied to a once Nationalised Institution, lovingly maintained and always carefully driven by its loyal and dedicated workforce 8)

I might add the word Vantastic! which should jolt memories of the late Steve Stringer.   In any case its been too long since I saw a Keep on Truckin' sticker (usually with that skinny dude and his unfeasibly long stride).   Heroic choice of van, much admire!!

That's pretty awesome. I'd be tempted to paint it in the style of the A-Team's van if I owned it, though  8)

I spotted this in Otley a few weeks ago.

Mine was ex-builders MM1000 van, swiftly 'upgraded' to a BT yellow one.

The auctions, Portobello Washington, had a good rack on auction day....

Red po MM1000s with a massive steel rod back to the rear door.

Another red one, shaped like a wedge of cheese - something had fallen on it!!

I spied a totally mint yellow but it went strong£, for me :(

2nd choice was clean but a bit crusty... Got it!

Came with wooden ladder rack & bag of snowchains.

Took the '10p hole' carb choke plate off but very LC engine.

Learned about engines, grease nipples, girls & nipples :)

Speaking of BR, a mate of mine used to work as store man at BR Immingham. As was customary in the nationalisation era he was bored one day at work so went to the paint shop and got several cans of BR Railfreight grey. He then spent the whole day painting his Marina van in it!

It was really good paint apparently, and the Marina never showed any signs of rusting again after that.

On the way back from Errol car auctions on Saturday, me and 17-Coffees saw a GMC van done up A-team style in Aberdeen.

Ha ha looked at the first photo and the A-Team theme came into my head.

Love the van, i too would have to A-Team it.

Ace. I love CFs. We had an Autosleeper one (sold to Moog) but I much prefered driving it to sleeping in it.

I had a CF2 Autosleeper; drove well as long as you respected its age and the weight.  The ZF gearbox used to be sought after, even with the standard ratios used in the CF2.  One of the ball joints was use all through CF production but the other (top I think - QSJ726) was only used in the short production run of the CF2 - buy one when you see one, just in case.

Loving the CF2, I actually drove one that had been Pinto'd with a type 9! Was an utterly basic ice cream van, basically a high top, with a big fridge in the back & counters, and a serving window on one side.

hi...thanks for the comments...but my pet hates are copycats... there are so many A Team and Mystery Machines going around...i prefer proper old school look ,probably go with some panel work, quite fancy a bit of "fogging"..but not getting into the bodywork till next year...

someone in the past has filled the side panels in,giving the van smooth sides, and they removed the rear door handle..(very annoying )but i have a replacement...next year i will sort out the "cracking " in the bondo over the filled panels

if any of you want to waste an hour or so,ive compiled a cf page on facebook...just pics ive found on the net...

a few of my old vanning mates are now considering getting back into it again after seeing mine... i dont think "Vanning" ever leaves you...

cheers...al

I remember as a kid going to the custom car show at Donny racecourse, and loved those old custom vans, asw a slightly careworn US Dodge van at Wroxham last month, and liked it, had that patinated look about it

I've seen a lot more Bedford CFs lately than I ever have done, in the past few months I saw 2 within few hundred yards of each other near Stonehenge heading East toward London as I was heading West. Recently I saw a Yellow CF heading over the M6 bridge near Stoke-on-Trent. There is/was one in Birmingham I papped some years back.

Hippy level off the scale DW. Groovy man :)

I've always fancied a CF, and they lend themselves so well to a bit of customising.

Not for customising, but this Autosleeper coachbuilt on the forecourt of my usual local garage keeps winking at me - the one in the background here:

I'm not sure it's for sale and I'm afraid to ask in case it is. Looks pretty tidy.

At one point on the show circuit, there was a concours CF2 that had a Carlton 2.2 injection lump fitted, apparently it could shift, featured in an early CV&P mag

I realised American's liked their vehicles big, but that's just ridiculous. For an idea of the same that thing, compare it to the woman reflected in the mirror.

Guess what I am playing with today?

Yes, a CF2 that we are stripping down in order to paint and lob a transporter body on :)

'Tis petrol powered, therefore it can ignore the LEZ of hell.
